Still can't believe Nintendo didn't offer these games on the 3DS, I said that for years during the 3DS lifespan. Missed opportunity, happy they found life on the system afterwards
They didn't want to associate the 3DS with their failed virtual boy. However, I think they could have released these games at the end of life, once stopped selling the 3ds line.
This has to be the coolest thing I've seen for the 3ds in a very long time. Having the first stereoscopic 3d games Nintendo made playable on 3ds just makes sense.
This is so rad! I’ve always wanted a virtual boy back in the day. So happy I finally get to experience it now. It’s so smooth on the 3DS but what this emulator does demonstrate there are games that implemented the stereoscopic 3D very well and others are questionable … and headache inducing. I can’t stand where an object is only visible in one eye. I guess that was a cheap trick to make something transparent but it drove me mad when my eyes wanted to focus on it… because you can’t! 😂
@STICKOMEDIA Exactly! Thank you. People can say what they want about the Virtual Boy hardware, or it's sales performance, but many of it's games were pretty decent and some even good, and deserved another chance to shine on the 3DS. Shame Nintendo never re-released the VB games on a handheld that was just meant for them to be on.
The 3DS is probably the only common game system that will ever be able to reproduce the 3D images of the Virtual Boy, so this is really the best thing that could ever be done in terms of preserving the Virtual Boy library
@@ProducerX21 they must've typed it while I around the same time. The video only had 20 comment when I commented. The funny thing is, I looked for a similar comment before I submitted my comment, and there wasn't one.
As much as Nintendo doesn't like emulation they know it exists and probably figured the few thousand people who care already have their full VB rom set. They couldn't have expected the effort in putting it on 3DS to pay off.
I remember I got my VB for $40 on clearance at a Walmart. Looking at the price today, I really wish I hadn't sold it at a yard sale for $10 twenty years ago.
We all make mistakes like that, one of my good friends growing up had like every N64 game and a ton of SNES games with mint condition boxes and his mom ended up throwing a lot of it out and donating the games, he told me years later that he would have just gave it all to me and then my heart sank.
@@Jokerwolf666 That's rough. My friend's mom got sick of tripping over his snes controller cord and threw his console away too. He told me, I dug it out of his trash, and we started hanging out at my house instead. 😂
@@disassemblyrequired3438 well he got his Doctorate in computer science and was one of the first people to figure out if true AI was possible. His mom had thrown it away because his course was like 10 years lol
Well, if you were smart enough like me and wanted true value, invest in real estate, precious metals, equities and most recently TRUE crypto utility assets like XRP and XDC with real world application. Ever since I started investing in 2013 as a teen, I am now debt free and free of financial burden. Video games are not world changing tech or innovation. You will NEVER see transformational wealth off of video game collecting alone.
I don't think that was a "jump scare". If it was meant to be one, it wasn't very good, since I didn't know it meant to be one until this comment. Jump scares normally have loud sounds. lol
I had an uncle with a Virtual Boy and got to play it briefly. I also recommend playing the VB emulator on the Meta Quest line. It can easily be side loaded and gives you more immersion.
Honestly it's kinda understandable why we never got it thru Virtual Console, theres like only 7 Nintendo owned games on it some of which are just not good so it was probably seen as a waste of time and money for them. But I'm happy that we got this thing. Never had VB itself but got some games in my collection over the years and it was nice to finally play them the more "right" way.
virtualboy is best experienced with the oculus IMO. You can switch between a static screen, as it was originally, or a more modern take on it. I highly recommend trying it out for anyone who hasn't
I’ve been an avid fan of the virtual boy for years. I’m so glad that people are finally experiencing the fun and unique games on the platform. I would really recommend also playing Bound High! and Jack Bros. (the earliest twin stick shooter I can think of)
There was only one game for the Virtual Boy I was looking forward to come out: Dragon Hopper. The concept, the art, the graphics, absolutely enthralled me. You play as a dragon prince in a top-down persoective ala Legend if Zelda and are exploring floors 3-D and all. Alas, it was cancelled and despite having a working beta for E3, so far no ROM dumps have been discovered. Would've loved it if it were ever found / released / completed.
I literally got to play thru Wario Land on the VB after not playing it when I had an original virtual boy back in the day. still holds up, best Wario game out there period!
Red Viper is definitely the way to go. VirtualBoyGo on the Quest is definitely no slouch, but I believe the Virtual Boy experience, while being "fully immersive" by design, is hamstrung by relying on a big clunky headset. I like VR, but only for VR. If I gotta charge my Quest, I'm playing something like Creed before I'll bother loading Teleroboxer. Here, it's no different to pick up and play as any of the 3DS Sonic games, or KI:U, or Kirby, and it's better for it. Those baked-in auto pauses also help a ton for that, play a round, close it up and do some work. I whole-heartedly recommend trying Space Squash. I played through that entire thing, and it feels like the best demonstration of the VB.
Brilliant Video TechWave Video Jon(SW). This is most definitely very neat indeed, some of the Games has some depth too them aswell, which is really cool.
Works flawlessly on my OG 3DS. Plus there are only like 18 total games for the Virtual Boy so you can get them all in about 4 seconds on the Internet Archive.
I am happy the Red Viper was made but It still cant run the Homebrew title: Hyper Fighting which is a total bummer. Also you can mod the original VB with the "Virtual Ribbon" to fix the display if you get a busted VB. Great video John!
I remember playing a Virtual Boy at a kiosk in a neighborhood Blockbuster when I was a kid and while I thought it was neat for a short while because I wore glasses the whole thing felt more cumbersome and uncomfortable than I was originally expecting and I personally wrote off VR and 3D as viable for a long time. Fast-forward to the release of two specific pieces of tech and my personal experiences with them to finally change my mind: * When Oculus released the Rift, Microsoft had setup a popup shop to demo it at the Samsung store in Columbus Circle in midtown Manhattan; I had tried out Robot Recall and even without wearing my glasses everything was clear and focused, the experience was smooth, and even the unusual controls felt natural to use. Commercial VR had finally been realized. * With the release of the 3DS, I saw a demo 3DS at a neighborhood Target and after playing with the 3D slider realized Nintendo finally "got" headset-free 3D. I read up a bit on the relevant patents and while most of the physics went over my head (my education stops at basic college physics, which I'm a bit rusty at) it was still pretty neat to see that even before the patents nobody else even considered such an approach except maybe for extremely small-scale holographic use. Supposedly Nintendo holds some patents related to using the Switch or similar recent or near future device in some headset mode, possibly related to AR or VR, and peeps originally thought it was gonna be unlocked via Labo or something. It might've been used for the Mario Kart Home RC racers or whatever it was called or it might never see the light of day, who knows. The point is for better or worse never write off Nintendo.
Whoa! Last time I looked, there were two options for Virtual Boy emulation on 3DS. One was slow and lacked 3D, and the other had 3D but was slow and glitchy. I'm glad someone finally got it working properly. The 3DS is the most obvious way to experience Virtual Boy games properly, considering they feel too small and low res for a VR headset but seem more or less like handheld games.
This finally convinces me to mod my 3DS... Many regrets of selling my two boxed Virtual Boys with a stack of games in the early 2000s for $35! Beyond this, I have to say the most authentic way to still experience it is through the VBJin emulator and a Rift/Quest headset. You can set the emulator up to mimic the red (or monochrome) and do the side-by-side 3D that perfectly replicates the experience, maybe slightly less vibrant red :p
I installed Red Viper last week and I've been loving Virtual Boy Wario Land! It's one of the best platformers I've ever played and really used the 3D gimmick well. The VB wasn't released in Australia, so there never would've been an opportunity for me to play it, I'm so glad for Red Viper. Hopefully the UI gets a bit of an upgrade but for a free emulator that opens up a whole new library of games (albeit a small one) this is fantastic!
I've been using Red Viper for the last few days and it is truly an amazing piece of software. The VB library is of course very limited but has a few games I'm really loving, such as Wario Land, Mario's Tennis, and Mario Clash. The emulation seems flawless on my old 3DS and I'm really thankful for being able to switch the color to something less agressive on the eyes :)
This is an amazing project completed and working because I remember when someone was trying to bring Virtual Boy to the 3DS called r3Dragon unfortunately it was never completed with certain games playable. Also Retroarch on 3DS has a Virtual Boy core, but that too had struggles running on the system.
I actually loved the feel of the VB controller. It was just so impractical to hold your head to the thing. I could have even gotten over it being all red if it had just been like 3DS where I held it like a normal handheld.
I've used 3 different ways to play VB games: 1. VR Headset 2. Looking Glass Portrait 3. 3DS using Red Viper. 3DS is pretty good for portable play. You can also use the c-stick on a New 3DS for the second dpad.
I've given that emulator a try on my new New 3DS XL. Jack Bros. is excellent, definitely give that one a go if you have a 3DS with a functioning 3D slider.
Even easier installing this with the QR code, it’s crazy how simple it was, now I am enjoying Virtual Boy games, never thought I’d be playing this ever.
The Virtual Boy had link port on it to link to other VBs that ultimately was never used officially. Fans where able to reverse engineer it and made fan version of Street Fighter to take advantage of it.
Fun Fact, some people are still actually making homebrew games for the Virtual Boy, and they do work with this emulator, but I prefer playing VB on my Oculus Quest, as the stereoscopic 3D on the 3DS kind of hurts your eyes even at the lowest setting, but if you play some of these games like the Robot boxing one without that depth of field, it just feels like something is missing, which is why the Quest provides the best experience, since the first person perspective is more natural so it doesn't bother your eyes as much, and the controllers are way more comfortable, so it actually feels like those games were made for the Quest.
they used to have a virtual boy set up at the local blockbuster in Kirkland, Wa. I was blessed being in such close approx to Nintendo. I could play Wario whenever I wanted for free.
I was gifted a virtual boy at launch when they were 300 bucks, and three weeks later it was on clearance for like 99 bucks. It was the only time I'd ever really seen my folks upset about making a purchase for me.
We had a virtual boy when it was new. Had all of the readily available games in america too. I actually loved the thing. For whatever reason our parents decided it was an outdoor toy, and it just got destroyed as a result. I gotta try this on my 3ds.
I'd say the virtual boy emulator for the meta quest headsets is the best way to play the crimson catalog and closest to its original design intent. Closed off full the 3D, and break the virtual boy controller in two, replace the d pads with analog sicks and you're holding quest controllers.
The 3DS experience is impressively similar to what the Virtual Boy was. This is a nice positive surprise. It has bring me joy to relieve those moments and the excitement of playing the Virtual Boy. Never had a bad experience of eye strain or neck pain thanks to God.
Wow, the games look great on the 3DS! It's funny to see the 3D in some of these games from 1995 looks better then the 3D in some of the native 3DS games. Gotta say, still prefer playing on the real hardware, for controls and some things just look/sound better on it still. The displays on it are actually very sharp, with little to no motion blur. The lenses can make the edges look fuzzy though
It is awesome to finally see Virtual Boy games in 3d again. I wonder if someone will start looking into Sega Scope 3d games and other various 3d titles. I know some of the Sega games are in collections here and there but it would be cool to see all of them work. I also underestimated many of Nintendo's games on Game Boy and Virtual Boy. Despite not being in color, they actually look and play really great.
I usually like to keep my hardware stock but now that we are in the digital age and once Nintendo pulled support for the 3DS, you might as well have fun with it. You can still play carts like normal and since there isn't really internet aspect/firmware updates left to worry about, you might as well take control of your hardware.
Fun Fact: There's no such thing as ghosting or motion blur on the Virtual Boy as it doesn't have an LCD screen. It's display is closure to those spinning fans that display animated LED text and pictures.
I have a New 2DS, so I can't use the 3D features but I played Wario Land, Mario Clash, Panic Bomber, and Jack Bros and these games are very much enjoyable even in 2D. Hell, with the color filter set to greyscale, it feels like I am playing a more powerful OG Game Boy. This is freaking awesome and I can't wait to play more of these lost gems. But 2DS owners, get Red Viper. You won't be left out even with no 3D.
I'm so glad someone finally utilized the 3DS's full capabilities. The Virtual Boy on 3DS was such a missed opportunity by Nintendo. I used to always tell my friends how great of an idea it was.
It only needs save states and it would be perfect. The AVGN was wondering why this didn't have a head strap. I like the fact you can change the color. That golf game would look better in green. The AVGN said that he expects golf to be in anything but red. I played games in gold color. I tried out Wario Land, Jack Bros, and Bound High which was never released. I think Bound High was complete or near complete before it got canned due to the failure of the Virtual Boy. I couldn't get the Pixie code in Jack Bros to work due to the odd position of buttons. Not really a huge issue though. I used custom firmware instead of homebrew. I heard that someone made a rom hack of Mario's Tennis that supports 2 player. Even though no official link cable was made the fans made one. The AVGN likes the KO effect in Teleroboxer.
I remember renting the system and a couple games from Blockbuster around the time when it first came out around 6 months to a year later I suffered some vision loss due to other medical reasons and am stoked I can finally come back to it all these years later
Meanwhile the Switch is 7 years old today and while it’s never been a cutting edge console, it was a game changer and its sheer amount of quality games makes up for that.
I had a VB back in the day. It honestly wasn't as bad as people complain about. The tiny game library was the biggest drawback. Teleroboxer and Wario Land were great.
Dude, you have to play Jack Brothers/Jack Bros. on the Virtual Boy. It's only in japanese, but it is easy to understand. That game was great. Also Galactic Pinball. This game kept me going for hours. Both are really fun to play.
I love the Virtual Boy, I don't see the difference with a gameboy. They both had two colors. They were both portable. The sound on the Virtual Boy sounds fantastic. It had an odd controller, but it worked well with the games. It's only problem was that it did cost more than a gameboy and that it was going up against its own sibling, the N64.
I'd say that was a pretty average Virtual Boy experience for those of us that were around back then, mine is pretty much the same only really playing it at store kiosks. One VB memory in particular really chaps my ass though... it was back in probably 2010ish my friend picked me up to go somewhere, and down my street there was a box of free stuff on the side of the road at the house of this girl that was in our grade. Inside that box was a Virtual Boy and a few games. What pisses me off is my friend insisted that he take ownership of it. The dude isn't a gamer at all aside from dabbling in stuff like Pokemon or San Andreas. If I had to guess he probably sold/pawned it by this point. What's cool about this is the timing. I just cracked a random 3ds I had laying around last week, haven't done much with it yet as messing around with a cfw ps3 grabbed my attention for this past week. Well I know what I'm doing later...
Glad they added the 3d slider support so quickly cause when I got it the other day it was no 3d or full blown 3d and I understood why nobody bought the thing lol
I have my new Nintendo 3ds with a homebrew. I have like 6 different systems and one is my modded console and now that I know this is on here, I’m all in.
I tried playing 3D Tetris with Red Viper on my N3DS XL. It runs fine for a few minutes, but then it crashes, with a pattern of parallel lines at about a 75° slope. Red Viper itself is still running, so you can reset or reload the game and start over.
Innsmouth and Red Alarm are my go tos. Looking forwar to this emulator to support homebrew more, lots of neat stuff there too. Hoping we might see some retroachievements implemented if possible and some color enhancements also if possible. I'd settle for the color changing based on level changes or the like if sprites can't have palette changes.
Yep, here we go. I always thought the 3DS would have been ideal for Virtual Boy due to that slider and second screen. At the very least, Nintendo could have released Wario Land without too much modification. It'd be a shame to have that one stuck forever on the VB or restricted to emulation on the PC.
The virtual boy was the first console I bought with my own money. It was neat, but they really should’ve leaned into more immersive games, like teleroboxer
This js on Nintendo. The 3DS was the perfect console to release Virtual Boy games. Despite the system not selling the Wario game and the Robot fighting game were apparently really good
I know Quest has a VR Virtual Boy emulator. But it also now has a version of Citra that lets you play games with that 3D depth in VR. So... What happens if you use VR Citra with Red Viper??
Oh this is so cool. I was hoping for something like this years ago but the only option was the Red Dragon emulator and it was terrible. Both unfinished and the compatibility wasn't there.
I'm going to eventually try it on my 3DS. Wario Land was my joint, but that red always prevented me beating that game. I haven't tried emulating VB since the og Xbox days.
