The 4 American Soldiers who Defected to North Korea & Became Stars

In the early 60s, four American soldiers found themselves in situations where crossing the DMZ into North Korea seemed like a good idea. Over the next few decades, the men became tools of the state. And when Kim Jong-Il was making a series of propaganda movies, he knew who to turn to for the roles of the evil Americans. So the men achieved fame in North Korea, even if it meant being tortured and forced to have children who would become spies. Join me to hear the stories of Larry Allen Abshier, James Joseph Dresnok, Charles Robert Jenkins, and Jerry Wayne Parrish: the Rat Pack of North Korea.

I watched the documentary about Dresnok and the bizarre irony was him saying he defected because he was rebelling against being ordered around and told what to do. So he intentionally enters the most repressive country on earth - makes a lot of sense.

Dresnok is probably the one I understand the most. Life just kept kicking the man - it's honestly suprising he never turned criminal throughout his early years. Most likely the only one who actually improved his life by defecting too.

When you see the whole documentary, unfortunately, you are wrong on this one.They just came from the lowest wrong bottom of society in America and they're brought to the top rung Society in North Korea. While it wouldn't be the choice for me, and it wouldn't be ideal their life was far better in North Korea with their status and they would have been at the bottom of the Barrel in the United States.

@satan899

Idk At least for one of them, it seems like his life was much better in North Korea than in the states. He was an absolute nobody drifting in life without a purpose. In NK he was an actor, taught English, had a family, got special treatment and was actually useful. dresdin was probably one of the only people whose life actually improved when he defected. That’s not a mark of how good North Korea is, but on how pathetic and hopeless his life was in the US. He might be the literal ONLY person you could say that about. But back in the 60s, North Korea wasn’t as desperately impoverished as it is today. When the Korean War ended, North Koreas economy was ahead of South Koreas and the future of each side was unknown as far as who would be the more prosperous side (as we all know communism ultimately ended up losing the Cold War and North Koreas economy is dead) but at the time, it may not have been as much of a wtf are you out of your mind decision as it would be today.

Wow I guess the four would win a contest of bad decision making. My time on the DMZ 1962 to 1963 had me thinking making it across would really not succeed and whatever the situation would only get worse if that is possible. What a**holes!!!

9:32 the famine happened exactly when the soviet union collapsed and he usa sanctions prevented north korea from trading with anyone else
@maarten1115
@maarten1115 Год назад
Its not that they were prevented from trading so much as they produced nothing they could trade. Their only exports are coal and narcotics. The former is exclusively bought by China and the latter isn't a valid, legal export product. Stop being a tankie.
@maarten1115
@maarten1115 Год назад
Btw tankie, when that socialist utopia collapsed (as they always do) it was US and Japanese grain, given for free, that prevented the whole country from starving to death. Keep that in mind next time you praise communism into the heavens.

Ironically looking at the history of NK and SK from the 1950’s through the 1980’s NK was more stable…. SK suffered through several “civil wars” with there elected presidents being overthrown then put back in power with major economic instability. While NK was held stable though USSR and Chinese economic support. Then the USSR collapsed and NK is a hell hole and SK is prosperous and successful.

We can add a fifth name to the list. Don’t waste coin on getting one, who willingly crosses the DMZ to the north, back.

The 5th is Joseph T White who taught spies English and reportedly "drowned during a picinic" King has a history of being a narcissist and asshole. Hell probably be killed by his guards or already did when he learned the true nature of his ordeal. Probably insulting guards, fought them, or even killed during an escape attempt
