The 44th Missouri at the Battle of Franklin

My great great grandfather (Elijah Peterson, MO 44th, Company D) was also wounded at Franklin.

I was just there. It is awesome. You can really visualize and get a feel for what went down there. The Carnton house just down the road (used as a Confederate field hospital) is just as interesting.

Boy, am I kicking myself right now. I was through Franklin on the way back to Colorado from a trip to North Carolina. I knew of the battle there but had never viewed it and knew virtually nothing about it, other than one whale of a battle took place there. Very thankful for the Franklin trust who helped to keep this hallowed ground from being covered in pizza places and houses. Seeing the air-conditioned Carter house was mind boggling! What a tragedy occurred throughout the war when men who had sworn allegiance to the United States took on the colors of an enemy nation, and paid the ultimate sacrifice in so many cases, such as John Adams slain by his own countrymen in defending the wickedness of slavery!

And well, thankfully.

They (44th Missouri) came from such area, where the slave population was very low in the Iowa border stipe! For example the Sullivan county had 1.1% slaves, Mercer county had 0.3% slaves, Grundy county had 3.6% slaves and all Missouri's slave population was about 9.7%. The 3 prounionist areas in Missouri had low% slaves. The prounionist Ozark region had such county as Texas county with 0.9% slaves. The St Louis area had Gasconade county with 0.9% slaves and this county voted Abraham Lincoln in 1860, St Louis county had 2.6% slaves and this county also voted Abraham Lincoln in 1860. The 3d prounionist area the Iowa border strip gave 44th Missouri infantry regiment. The PROCONFEDERATE Little Dixie area in Missoury had such slave population % as LaFayette 31.7%. Near to the Kansas border also the Kansas Missouri border war also turned Missourians to be proconfederate. For the lost cause people are difficult to understand the majority of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware fought for the USA in the Civil War.

Kentucky had 19.5% slaves, Missouri had 9.7% slaves, Delaware had 1.6% slaves, Maryland had 12.7% slaves and the future West Virginia had 4.7% slaves. The lowest % slaves populated Confederate border states Tennessee had 24.8% slaves and Arkansas had 25.5% slaves. Tennessee gave about 31000 white unionist soldiers (3.7% of the free people women and man)and Arkansas gave (mainly the Ozark region) 9000 white unionist (2.8 % of the free people women and man) , The 5.3 % slave population difference was enough to turn Kentucky prounionst majority and Tennessee became proconfederate majority!
