I bought a Callaway big Bertha 3H this year, didnt even get to the range with it ,used it in the round that day. Horrific results, Watched your vid on this and the very next round ,still no practice , I'm smashing this thing, 200 to 230 ,straight some fade ,and honestly a stinger everytime. No idea how to hit a stinger ,lol, but its beautiful. Off the tee ,fairway, rough, it's my favorite club in my bag. I was treating it like a driver , you taught me play it like an iron,. Thanks MSG, gamechanger .
You don't know how bad I needed these tips!.. I had pulled my hybrid and 3 wood out of my bag and put them in time out!.. lol Heading to the range later to work on this!.. Thanks again Matt!
I needed the comments here more than the tips. Everything I read or watch claims hybrids are the best thing to ever happen to mid/high handicappers, and I've spent years thinking I was the only golfer on earth who couldn't hit them.
Great tips Matt. You have no idea how badly I needed to hear this lesson. Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty, and guilty of all 5 mistakes which explains why I only hit about 10% of my hybrid shots decently. Never knew exactly what I was supposed to be doing with that club so this will definitely help my game!
Perfect timing. I just started scuffing my hybrids a few weeks ago. Spine angle and a few of these were the issue. The way the other parts of my game are at the moment, i could be a mid-handicapper if i get to flushing my hybrids more.
Well another absolute great tip by MSG! I love my hybrids. 3...4...and 5 hybrids. They are the best thing for mid to high handicap golfers and even some low handicap guys I play with use a 3 and 4 hybrid. So thank u again for all u do for us MSG and have a wicked good Wednesday
They use to be my worst too and it was due to how long the shafts they put in them. Most hybrids are an inch or two longer than the iron they are to replace. I had my 4 & 5h shaft cut down to be half in longer than the 4 & 5i they are replacing and the shafts are a little lighter. Works for me.
These “biggest mistake” videos are great! Muddled golfers such as myself generally get the basics of “do it like this” but there are many ways to mess it up and it’s difficult to separate the signal from the noise in self-correcting. For me at least this series of tips are like Pareto Rule maps: fix these mistakes and you’ll eliminate 80% of your problems. Really useful, practical instruction. Thanks!
Great lesson!!! I love hitting my hybrids and fairway woods. The key for me is your tip #3. When I started lifting my hands it all came together. Thanks.
Thanks, you are spot on! I have struggled with the hybrids mostly I hit them like a fairway wood. Or slightly a little forward off center and get good results, but I have some shorter 4 and 5 hybrids that I tried hitting like a wood and struggled. My 2 and 3 hybrids are longer and I figured out I had to hit them similar to my woods. The 4 and 5 I had to hit more in The middle of my stance with higher hands and squared. Thanks for this!
Matt, great video! I rely on my 4 hybrid a lot so this video will be a big help. I love the belt tap tip. My only real problem with my hybrid is occasionally getting it too far back in my stance, so the belt tap will help. Also, I noticed you have your hybrid lined up under your left (lead) eye. This is the exact line up you showed in a video a few weeks ago one iron alignment. Very good, consistent, instruction. You're my go-to video instructor because you're so clear, easy to understand, and enthusiastic. Please, keep up the great work.
Love those hybrid tips from you Matt. Just purchased two Titleist 818 h2’s (19&21 degree) and the last tip with the open stance was Gold (Jerry)…thanks!
It takes some practice but, once you get comfortable, the hybrid 4 & 5 are fantastic clubs for the high handicap golfer. I am 79 and really appreciate their effectiveness.
Thanks sooooo much for this hybrid and long iron video! ⛳️ They helped me finally hit the ball solid and airborne! ☄️ I was extremely frustrated 😡 until and tried your detailed tips. 😁
Nice video as always. Looks like you have been working your golf muscles. Looking Fit. How about a video on golf fitness to promote golf strength, distance and endurance.
Great tips today! My hybrid was feast or famine for a long time, so I took Driver out my bag for this entire season and played it off the Teebox and 2nd shot (where needed) it's now more feast and rarely famine and I think the feet placement tip is the one I'm guilty of and will work on now. PS: when you're talking about the club face it would be more helpful if your camera would do a "close-up" shot while you're explaining it so we can see what you mean by the face being more open / closed/ neutral...etc... currently the camera is too far away for viewers to see the detail you're explaining. You do great videos now but I think that small change would make them exceptional and more relevant to viewers
I really enjoy your content and tips. You teach in such a way that isnt complicated. You have already sorted my wedge play a long time ago. Thank you for putting these put there.
Definitely opened my mind up! I recently bought a hybrid and I know they can be very helpful and forgiving when properly used. And I didn’t really know where to position the ball. Thanks for the tip! Definitely going to practice this
Thanks for the tips, will definitely try out the setup next time I get to the range. 30+ years golfing, and I’ve always struggled with the long irons, so I bought a hybrid and struggled with it. I hit fairway woods great, but feel like an “old man” carrying a 7&9 wood for the longer shots.
Holy crap. That's a lot of bad things you find golfers do with this club. I only just recently got the g425 hybrid and after all the bad things I heard about them, I was really hesitant about getting one as I am also a high handicapped player. I was going to get a 7 wood instead as I also have a slow swing speed. I need not have worried. The only thing I needed to tweak on the club was to adjust it to 1 degree +. It complements my irons beautifully.
My Hybrids are my go to clubs. However, I sometimes aim to far right for some reason and pull the ball left. I will try having a more open stance from now on and see if that helps eliminate that issue.
I aline my sternum with the back half of the ball , and I look at and target the grass immediately in front of the ball .... Callaway B21s.... I love those sticks
So important to set up so that a good strike requires you to clear the body. Then you can fully release without snuffing it left. These tips encourage that.
Good tips. Honestly I hit my hybrids pretty solidly, so much so that I carry a 21 degree and 24 degree hybrid that has replaced my 4 and 5 irons. I find I hit them much more solidly and get them high in the air much better than I hit a 4 or 5 iron. The only issue I ever have is hitting a slightly thin or fat shot. However, even with those mishits, the shots get out enough to not be a disaster.
Matt, What hitting mat are you using? It appears to be two stance mats and a hitting strip. Also, the surrounding flooring. Is it just turf on a hard surface or is there an underlayment like foam insulation board or foam puzzle pieces?
Just got some newer(still used) clubs and 3-7 are hybrid, I did have an older set of Adams that had 3 hybrids, (4,5,6)which I came to really like those clubs and knew when I got another set I would have to have hybrids as part of the set. This tip is excellent info as always! On another note, how are things looking for the REAL RU-vid Open tournament? Loved the one you did during covid but am anxiously awaiting your announcement of the real deal. Now that your are here in Georgia, I might be able to actually see the tourney in person!
Big fan of yours, I need some help with something, I haven’t play in about 14yrs, just started back, I’m an 2-handicap but can’t seem to get my timing down, what could I do to get it back, Rob from Shreveport, love all your videos
I'd love to play a round with you. such a methodical golfer who is much more patient than i am. been golfing for a year... would love to see what one lesson from a "pro" like you would do to my game
Mr Short Game, I have a set of Cleveland HB irons due to age. I am a female 63. I was wondering if I need to hit these irons as a HB club vs regular iron shot. Have trouble hitting sweet shots but when I do it is great. Can you comment on this???
Yeah, my 11yr old does mistake number 5 with his woods... but he doesn't realize his stance is closed... I wonder if there is a self check technique for alignment? Also, what kind of pants are those (I hate to even ask, but I need to reload my wardrobe)?
My hybrid used to be the best club in my bag I would use it off most tees I could step up there and pipe it 240 straight down the pipe of with a little push cut every single time. Now I have completely lost it and can’t find it I’m hooking pull hittting soft ones right. Super frustrating club right now.
to err is human but to hit a bad hybrid shot is the norm for mid to high handicappers. What I would like to know is if when you tee the ball up using a hybrid on a short par four do you move the ball forward in your stance so you hit up on the ball or is you tip to never hit up with hybrids fairway metals confined to fairway shots?
Just explained my hybrid error perfectly.. hands forward.. guilty… ball in middle of stance.. low flight every time, usually straightish.. must be compensating and getting lucky, never feels like a great shot though
try lining your sternum over the front part of the club head or middle ( you'll have to find which works better yourself) ...when swinging, focus on the grass just behind the ball...cuz thats where you want the club to hit the ground. ..
The problem my teitlist hybrid has a heavier head than my number 5 wood adams n my number u iron has shorter range than my 4 iron about 3 meters. I really use my hybrin so seldom n inget shank on it devot
I’m guilty as can be when it comes to bad ball position with a hybrid. Except instead of to far back I get to far forward. Actually having the ball to far forward is something I have to be mindful of with everything but especially the driver and hybrid.
