This is such powerful information, and explained so simply and clearly as always. I'm going to be referring back to this video a lot to learn all these chord shapes. This is video and your explanation of the CAGED system unlocked a deeper understanding of the fretboard for me. Thank you for making such high quality educational content!

This was extremely helpful to me! As someone who had ten years of piano lessons while growing up, I have a pretty good understanding of music theory and also of what I’m lacking on guitar. I only had a few months of guitar lessons as a teenager and have been completely self taught for the past almost 40 years. I’m very comfortably noodling melodic lines around the fretboard but have always been frustrated that my chord vocabulary was so much more limited than on piano. I can see now that I never really progressed much beyond barre chords, and that I need to put in some rigorous practice and study of triad and shell chord voicings. Thank you so much!

You said the basic C, E, A, D are not flexible and can't be moved across the neck? Actually that's wrong because they all are :) I've seen many beautiful examples of it - same shape, same fingering, different place up the neck, they just get called something else and there are many songs based on this flexibility.

Great context. This lesson is meant as a basic learning curve for building a basic chord library and is not exhaustive. But yeah, tons of cool things you can do with a decent amount of experimentation and trial and error!

Once again, Chris, you have helped to make my journey as a guitarist easier! Thanks for this overview of the essential chord types! Knowing how flexible the fretboard is, can be pretty daunting (how will I ever learn all the notes/chords?). So your video really helps to make learning my way around seem actually doable. I was relieved to realize, that I already know how to play and use the first 3 types (though I'm not yet totally comfortable playing the power chords with the root on the D and G strings). And I'm still working on my triads and shell voicings.

Hi Chris, I really appreciate your teaching and style of teaching. Aren’t there more permutations of the “G Cowboy” chord? Ie, “G-11” or just playing the first string at the 3rd fret etc? Hope I’m not being a pain.
@curiousguitarist
@curiousguitarist День назад
Not at all! In these lessons I try to keep the variables low so the cognitive attachment is higher. And ultimately, while there are definitely a few more variations for the cowboy chords, it's the moveable libraries that are so important. But I think this might be a great video idea... "How much can you get our of the open chords!?" Writing this one down! Thanks!

@@curiousguitarist very true. Guitar is so vast , it’s a universe , just recently I’ve been falling in love with the idea of focusing on doing the basics really well. Like basic chords and strumming and rhythm. It’s these basics that comprise 90% of our playing but are often overlooked in favour of more flashy techniques and soloing. Everything has a place but there’s a lot to be said for being proficient and doing the basics really well

@@curiousguitarist Sorry for my lack of detail. When you were going through the fingering for power cords, as we go up and down the fretboard, it looks like the power chords finger positions appear to follow the pentatonic scale. This was a good videos lesson its what Joe Pass does in his teach about "Line Cliche" by moving one finger of a chord step wise down or up to create a new chord. You forget to add in Slash Chords in the 6 Essential chord types. The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Beach Boys use Slash chords and Line Cliche. Watch this video Chris to learn about this technique to make your own video lesson about it click here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hCuzsgxnpB8.html

@@curiousguitarist You haven't made a video lesson the way pink floyd uses Slash Chords. They pick ONE note out of the 7th chord and move the note down or up by step wise motion, its somewhat like a Line Cliche. Its a different way of using Slash chords to make a video lesson about it.
