THE 5 TYPES OF GERMAM SHEPHERD DOGS OUTLINED HERE: 👇👇👇👇
1️⃣1) West-German Working Line (refering to west Germany)
a. This is the most popular GSD with a shorter hair coat and are calmer and more friendly around new people and children and recommended for families. They are said to make the best family pets with the best temperament.
2️⃣2) American Show Lines German Shepherds:
a. These dog's are bred for show purposes. They can have a shorter or long coat. They generally are not used as working dog's or in guarding competitions. And mostly sold as companion pets.
b. These are the most common German Shepherd available in America and Canada, They have a mixture of different bloodlines but do have a distinguished look.
c. They have shorter muzzels, a slopping gait and longer hocks than other lines, they have thicker under bellies and thinner heads as well. When it comes to color this breed is usually black and tan and the color white is allowed.
d. Make sure to get an American GSD with a pedigree to know what temperament your getting. There are a lot of backyard bred American GSDs that will have mystery personalities and temperaments.
3️⃣3) West German show lines or European Show Line German shepherds -
a. They are known for being the most good looking out of the 5 types of GSDS.
b. They have a black and red fur color.
c. Because of their gorgeous looks, they make great show dog's.
d. They are very similar to the American show lines but have alittle more of a guarding and protecting instinct to be a working dog.
e. The European show line GSDs also make great pets and are better with children.
4️⃣4) East German DDR Working Line (Dourche democratic republic - meaning east Germany)
a. The East lines are on the bigger side when compared to the 4 other types. They have a thick double coat. They are strong working dog's and often used as police dog's, military dog's and rescue dog's. They have a high prey drive and are triggered easily and should be monitored around humans.
b. They regularly come in black and have the darkest color among all the working lines.
c. This type of german shepherd is very intelligent but can be aggressive towards strangers.
d. They are often not recommended to have around children.
e. The East German DDR have very strict breeding rules and can only breed if they are free of hip dysplasia and other diseases.
5️⃣5) Czech Working line German Shepherds
a. They are the smallest, leanest type of German shepherd, making them more agile and gracefull. They usually have smaller ears than other GSDs and have a short rough coat that’s easy to maintain and come in the sable color.
b. They are calmer but are still labor intensive dog's, with great protection drive for police work and guarding but are not as aggressive as the East German lines.
c. They are better as pets around children, but monitoring any GSD around kids is recommended.
d. And like the Eastern dog's they have strick breeding rights and are generally very healthy dog's.
🐾So I hope you Enjoyed learning about all the different types of German Shepherds!!! They're such beautiful dog's, tireless workers, and great comapantions BUT since they are such an intense dog I hope you think 2-3x about if this dog is the right dog for you and your family. They require tons of training, attention and exercise.

No! I love GSDs the most. But a poorly bred dog will give you the tragedy of hip dysplasia and the poorly trained one will give you nervous biters like Major and Commander - the president's two GSDs that keep biting people they shouldn't. If you have good breeding and good training, your comment holds 100% true.

I had an East German Shepherd/ Czechoslovakian dog. He was from a long line of police dogs. His sire was a K9 patrol dog for a city here in Michigan. His dame was a bomb detection dog. We got our Zorro when he was a 7 week old puppy. He grew to be a large big boned boy with a large beautiful head and and a nice straight back. He was 110 pounds of pure muscle. He had a great personality but he did have some aggression.. I didn't know anything about german shepherds when I got him. My husband didn't want me to neuter him and so I didn't. According to this sweet veterinarian in this video that would have been a dangerous combination his being from the Eastern line and not neutered. He never attacked anyone thankfully but he scared the poop out of anyone coming in his territory without invitation with his intimidating bark and looks. He was though, a sweet guy to all who came over to visit and was extra gentle with children and the elderly. I must have done something right because he was very respectful and cooperative to any of our veterinarian staff which also watched he and his brother and best buddy Fabio, our pomeranian when we would vacation. Zorro was the best dog I ever owned. He made me feel so safe and loved. He gave hugs all the time, too. He was just a gentle giant for the most part. Sadly, we only had him for 11 years and 5 months and had to put him down last July. I will never forget that dog. He was an amazing companion, protector and friend.

We have 2, one rescue, one pedigree. Our rescue, Sadie, is a showstopper- large, long body, feer, and muzzle. I call her my Cadillac girl ! The lady we got our Luger from was actually driving past our house and saw us letting Sadie relieve herself (she had a drain and stitches in her front leg from busting through a wood fence 🙄), stopped dead in the middle of the road, and asked about her. Refused to believe she was paperless until we told her story. Both GSDs are wonderful, calm, well behaved in public, and too stinking smart - we're lucky they don't have thumbs! I only wish I could post pictures. Sadie is a medium long haired standard blanket, with strong reddish tones where the tan and black on her haunches meet. Luger is black and tan working line - tan legs and undercarriage with chocolate spots at the base of his ears. Agreed - best dogs ever!

If I may, do you have two boys and a girl, or two girls and a boy? I ask only because I would like to adopt a GSD to add to my current two which is a 9 year old male GSD and a 5 year old female Malinois/GSD mix. I've heard two females should not be together because they will fight for dominance, but my male GSD is the alpha despite my female constantly trying to challenge him.

I have a male Eastern line working shepherd and he is the smartest dog I've ever owned. He knows verbal and non verbal commands, loves to search using his nose, highly intuitive (sometimes it scares me), innately protective over me and family members and loves children. Despite being nine, he still has the same intensity and drive as he did when he was a teenager. The only difference is; he not as fast as he use to be (especially against my Malinois), but still has the torque power. I wish he loved to cuddle, but never took to it. Not even as a puppy. He loves to be loved on, just not cuddled. If I could have another one of him, I would without question.

@@drlindsaybutzer what i dont like about the show lines is the severely sloped hips. Which imo is part of the reason why shepherds hips have gone downhill so much and so prone to hip joint issues. its just not a natural functional conformation for the way the dogs are meant to move. if you look at old photos of the lines they did not start outlike that. The breed started with a straight back.. the severely sloped hips are a result of overbreeding and human meddling that is just causing sad health outcomes for our dogs in the name of 'beauty' and because ridiculous breeders thinks its 'cute' or more 'dignified' looking (not sure how nearly dragging your a$$ on the ground is dignified but ::shrug:: im not a breeder )

I had my West working line Shepard for over 12 years before she sadly passed away last month. She was the sweetest and most empathetic dog I’ve ever had. She was intelligent, full of energy and so great with kids. The first time she saw a child was when she was 4 years old and our friends brought their 1 year old son over. They wanted Trixie, our GSD, to meet him. I was a little nervous not knowing how she would respond, but she instantly fell in love with their baby boy and was so gentle with him as she played with him. Later on she met more and more of our friends’ kids and just adored them all. Easily the best dog I’ve ever had and would absolutely get another once our baby is born and is a little older. I’ve had family members that don’t understand GSDs constantly tell me that they’re too aggressive to be around kids. If you’re talking about the East DDR, then I would agree that it’s probably not a good idea, but for the West, I wouldn’t want another dog for our family.

@@RshadowA A wolf or normal dog places it paws in a narrow straight line, running slightly sidewise. With the German Shepard show breeds, the breeders tried to get the dogs to move like a horse, placing the paws not in line but side by side. That has catastrophic results for the bone structure and gives problems in the joints.

For me, the most beautiful German Shepherd Dog is the Old German Shepherd Dog. The Old German Shepherd Dog is not an independent dog breed recognized by the FCI (Fédération Cynologique Internationale), but the long-haired variant of the German Shepherd Dog. Its ancestors were herding dogs from southern and central German regions. Breeding of the German Shepherd Dog began in 1899 with the aim of creating a versatile working dog. The Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde e. V. (SV) was responsible for the breed standards from the very beginning. Over time, the association excluded more and more varieties from breeding - including the longhaired dog in 1930. This was met with incomprehension by many enthusiasts. They organized themselves into their own clubs and began breeding the Old German Shepherd Dog, which differs from the German Shepherd only in its coat. It was not until 2010 that the SV included the longstock variety in the breed standards again.

Hello, I am from Germany. I had a lot to do with German shepherds 30 years ago. It is true that there was a time when this "Tail Dragger" style type of breed was very popular here. However, over time, with increasing problems, this process was reversed. Many still don't have a really straight back, but it's not as bad as it was back then. A rethink has also taken place in West Germany. I would not recommend a working line dog to everyone. They are high energy dogs and very demanding. If you are a low energy person, the dog will try to dominate you. And believe me, a male GSD can be really tough. Especially if he has come to the conclusion that he is the leader of the pack. So don't always want the best but choose the one that you feel suits you best. A Show line GSD can also be a very nice dog. It also depends a lot on the breeder.

I agree, most people who get a working line don’t understand them. I personally would only have a working line, but that’s because I’ve worked with them for over 12 years and my family has raised other high drive breeds since before I was born. I would not recommend them to a first time dog owner, but they are the only one that would want at the same time.

I am little surprised that German shepherd is categorized as difficult. He is the opposite for me. Of course you need some exercise with him. But it is extremely adapted to humans, it can read face expressions easily and act accordingly. Netherless you need to think as a dog. Compared to way more complicated dogs , dogs that are closer to the wolf, the shepherd is easy for me. We owned a Barsoi, oh my God, never dare to dream.

Females are probably even worse, since they don't automatically bond to one person as easily as males. I have a female now, and she is a handful, even though she is never left alone, has plenty of attention and exercise. She's 9 months old, but she's 90 pounds and doesn't want to respect authority. She's getting better, but I know she won't really calm down until she's about 2 years old.

My 97pound lapdog, Gerda, is my third East German GSD. I was shocked to hear them characterized as being aggressive and possibly even dangerous. Nothing could be further from the truth for all three of mine. They have all been delightful companions and family dogs with amazing intelligence and communication skills. I have recently begun training Gerda as a mobility service dog to help me as I am afflicted with a degenerative spinal condition that is becoming increasingly debilitating. She seems to be a natural. She is so calm and focused and learns so quickly. She is not the least bit aggressive and is always a perfect lady when in public. I think that there must be a good deal of variation in temperament and that early socialization makes a huge difference.

I also have a DDR, and he is calm and well socialized, but the amount of socialization you give to a dog is key to determine its temperament. But in the hands of the wrong owner and wrong environment things would be different with the same dog. It is more of a reflection on you and the relationship you have with your GSD

The german shepherd dog did not start in the 1960's. They started back in the mid to later half of the 19th century. Fun fact, it was a gsd that saved Warner Brothers from being bankrupt back in the 1920's and that dog was Rin Tin Tin. He was brought back from Germany after WWI. White gsd are not allowed in AKC show events sadly and infact are being bred as a seperate breed because of this which is stupid in my opinion, I don't mean breeding them is stupid I mean that the AKC and the American GSD club is stupid for not allowing these beautiful dogs to be shown. However, the AKC will register them and you can do other AKC events just not in the show ring. The white gsd are great dogs and I can understand why many fans of the white gsd loves them so much. Good luck to those trying to make them a better breed and in their efforts to set them apart so the AKC will reconize them

I have 2 GSDs. One is East German lines and boy, that dog is ALWAYS on. Super protective, the energy of a malinois, and extremely headstrong. He is thin and wiry, but stronger than you could ever imagine. Even after having him neutered, he is horribly dog aggresive and always on guard with people. He is a fantastic natural herder, and is unbelievably smart. He picks up language cues faster than any dog I've ever seen. My other one is a biscuit colored female, American and European lines. She is about as aggressive as a marshmallow, but she will patrol and bark at strangers to sound an alarm. She was bred for personality, and she REALLY has a wonderful companionship personality. Always beside us no matter what and very affectionate. She is an amazing natural herder, as well as extremely athletic. I wouldn't say she is nearly as smart as our East German boy, she is really miles behind him as far as intelligence. There's just no comparison. To anyone wanting one of these dogs-DO NOT get one unless everyone in your family has a strong, leader-type personality, and for heaven's sake do not ever get one unless everyone in the family can physically handle a dog that strong. Seriously, they are very rough animals and have no idea. They play rough and aggressive, they live rough and aggressive a lot of the time. They also have puppy brains for at least 2 years. It can be rough if you aren't the right type of person to put up with it. Yes, you can train them to be less toothy when playing, but it isn't fool proof. Interact with this breed a lot before you buy.

Thank you for the excellent point that everyone in the family should be able to work with the dog. I know a couple of men who chose more aggressive dogs because they wanted a guardian type of dog while they were away from home. In both cases it got to a situation where their wife was not happy with the dog's behaviour and for a long time the man couldn't see any issues. If you get a large working dog not as a companion, deliberately, your partner has got to be equally involved in training or rethink your ideas! 😊

Great comment! I also have a DDR, and everything you said is true, and I closely relate. A DDR can be trained to be less protective, it takes a lot more work than a show line, and it does not come as naturally. Puppy brains for two years! Yup! but those puppy teeth for the first few months! I find the GSD with those puppy teeth and their propensity for mouthing to be quite the phase to go through. A show line and a working line are not the same dog. Even the feel of them. By touching the back of the neck on a show line you will be able to feel the firm muscle below that beautiful coat. It is well muscled and when you squeeze into it does give a bit. But on a DDR this same area is noticeably much more firm it is rock hard, and difficult to squeeze in on that muscle. And this physical difference translates into a faster dog with more power, more ability to jump (fences), can run faster and longer, and the DDR is also equipped with a lot of drive. They need a job. With my DDR he is a family dog, but his job is to fetch, and to do scent work. He takes these tasks like it is a job and the most important thing in his life, nothing distracts him, and he would go until he would collapse. I guarantee you that if you have a DDR and he does not have a job, he may determine that his job is to protect you from everyone and everything. But there are always exceptions.

I commented before I read these comments. My dog was all what you in this group of texting said. I did forget to mention how very strong my Zorro was in my first comment. That had been an issue when trying to walk him. He definitely took a lot of work and some of his life was without my husband being around to help me because he traveled with his job and was only living at home for the last 7 years of Zorro's life. I'm surprised I made it through all the crazy time while he was a pup basically dealing with it by myself and was in my 50's. He eventually learned who was boss but yeah, he was hyper protective and wanted to work. His job was to fetch and protect and he loved to track as well. Great dog!

Technically not a GSD, but I love the Shiloh Shepherd! Bred mostly from German lines starting in the 1970s, but with a tiny bit of Malamute as well. Some have short coats, but most are long coated dogs. More laid back than the GSD and with a less aggressive temperament, the Shiloh makes an excellent family pet and protector of children. They tend to be even larger than GSDs, come in many colors, and are stunning dogs. Internal breed politics has caused them to have THREE separate registries, but all of them have strict breeding standards. This is good, because the breeding pool is relatively small and inbreeding is always a concern. I have two Shilohs and they are the best dogs I've ever owned.

She’s full of energy she loves going on walks hiking playing catch with me. She’s a worker too. Everytime I’m working on something seems like she’s always there to help assist. She goes with me just about everywhere to lowes home improvement store or loves going for car rides to the park. We do just about everything together I feel so bad when I have to leave and can’t take her ti work with me. The great news is when I come home she’s always excited to see me regardless of what time it is. Always gives me a warm welcome I know I have been missed. Thank you for your channel wish they had more videos of these wonderful animals

I have 2 all black GSDs, who are 2 years old. One is a DDR working line and the other is a long hair Czech working line. They are both amazing, gentle girls. They have been thoroughly socialized since they were 4 months old, and that makes such a difference. They are also given the opportunity to play and get their much needed exercise.

I've had a lot of different types of dogs over 70 years, Rottie, Dobe, Golden, Corgi and a West German working line GSD. The 'doggiest' dog, if that makes any sense, was the GSD. I rescued her before she was going to be shot by an idiot who was told that as a female she wouldn't be any good as a protection/attack dog. The smartest, most confident, loyal and well adjusted dog I ever had, after de-programming her for a few months. She lived almost 15 years and was loved by anyone who knew her and she loved them back.

I rescued a GSD too and it was touch and go at first. She hadn't been socialised at all, with people or other dogs and that made me anxious whenever I took her to the park. One day she got into a snarling, growling non-biting scrap with another GSD and I sort of panicked, thinking that it was going to go badly. Once everything settled down the other GSD's owner had a little talk with me. The 'fight' wasn't a fight, just a couple of dogs trying to prove which was the toughest and that my dog was just being protective of me. That made sense to me so I stopped getting worried when we went to the park and she was a bit of a celebrity after a while. One owner told me that my GSD was the best behaved dog at the park.

East German Working line is what I have. She comes in at a lean 100 lbs and is all about protecting her family. She is good with children and will protect a child she does not know if she thinks they are in danger. My trainers called her an ultimate shepherd and is a fantastic dog.

I had a longer coat German Shepard and I found her easy. She was around other dogs and people since she was little. Her mother was white. I got her off of a farm in Michigan. She was an easy dog. She was not really exposed to children until she was about three. It took her less than a half hour to fall in love. I got her son back when he was about two and he was a bit headstrong but a good boy. I love Shepard’s. She loved to run trails and open spaces when we went to Michigan. You can’t have them in an apartment. They need a yard. They loved the kid’s playgrounds. I showed them how to go down the slides. They couldn’t get enough of that. I taught them to not be aggressive and all it took was one time. You can’t let them be aggressive with other animals or people. Training is a must because of their size.

I have a 10 week old male East German GSD, he is my 4th GSD but 1st East German GSD. He is at least twice as active and prey driven than any other GSD I’ve owned. He is however, extremely intelligent, eager to learn and hyper alert. I’ve retired as an LEO and knew I’d have time for training, otherwise I would’ve chosen a west German GSD that are equally intelligent but a bit less prey driven (in my experience), he has proven to be an incredibly perceptive GSD, more so than the others I’ve owned. I believe the GSD’s and Malinois to be the easiest to train and most eager to learn/please. Just my experiences, I’m sure everyone has their own experiences as well. Cannot go wrong with this breed but….. get a hip/health guarantee and feed your GSD only the best foods.

The dog she has is a Czech GSD. I have owned two of them. Mine were both females, and good with people, but not with other digs. Highly protective, but also wonderful pets. The GSD was created in the 1800s in Germany by a German cavalry captain from a shepherd s dog, which was a wolf dog (part wolf). The Czech line is a mix of the DDR GSD bred with Czech wolves, so its different from the DDR , as it has more wolf in its genetic makeup. Its highly intelligent. Showlines suffer from many genetic issues due to breeding "desirable" body types., leading to bad hip issues. Working line dogs tend to be far less prone to things like hip dysplasia. My two cents from personal experience and much research.

I think you're confusing the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog with the Czech working line GSD, which was originally bred from the DDR working line Shepherds starting in the mid 1950s. The Czech GSD has no wolf in its lineage at all. I know someone that has a CWD and a Wolf / GSD mix, the CWD is an amazing dog. looks like a dog that resembles a wolf, the Wolf / GSD looks far more like a wolf and is, frankly, a bit scary to watch. The owner is a great trainer and has complete control of both, but you always sense the independence and wild nature of the mix, just another planet compared to the CWD which acts and seems far more similar to a GSD. The beauty of the CWD is incredible, from the proportions to the tan / brown colouring, and an extraordinary face.

The “show” lines can have horrible conformation and many can’t pass joint exams. Same thing has happened in other dog breeds, horses, etc. What about the old fashioned, working American German Shepherd? Not over sized, strong backs, hips and family suitable temperaments. Protection dogs through herding instincts, which is what the original German Shepherds were - herding dogs.

Expose them to children as puppies. I took mine to my son's soccer games for example. Mine is very protective of "her" little ones, my nieces and nephews. Every gsd is suspicious of strangers, and this is probably the most difficult part of owning one. I tell mine to be nice, and since they can understand and learn words very well it does have an effect. Mostly this refers to aggressive barking, but if in any doubt they will still do it until they see you interact with the stranger in a friendly manner. Also, they NEVER let their guard down. Always on duty is the best way to describe a GSD.

I've got a 9yr old rescue (owner died) one that appears to be a show line/West German and he's completely chill with everybody. Very low aggression. He lets strange kids and passing drunks pet him in the street without issue but he's nervous around other dogs. We're told that he grew up in a bar. He's also undersized so people keep thinking he's a puppy. I'm still keeping him away from babies cos he likes squeaky toys and methodically shreds them.

I've had and trained GSD's for..well forever! Gentle, firm. consistent, Show them..don't just tell them. Patience..love..reenforcement rather than correction. If they don't come..don't call them twice (they do count)..get up, walk over, and take the leash and as you walk..say "good Come." Never ever call them to be corrected. SOCIALIZE with all sorts of people. Maximize their ability to enjoy people... You don't have to teach them to be protective it's their nature. Assure them..and then gentle them. They can easily over do protective and you won't like the results..nor will your GSD.

I had an all black east german working dog who was absolutely intense. We had to adjust our whole lives to keep everyone safe and her life in order, we rescued her and it was clear she was way way too much dog for us but then my kids came along and protecting them became her whole life so protecting hers became ours. I knew when she passed that i never wanted to be without a german shepherd again but we chose a much calmer pet bred white german shepherd whos parents excelled in obedience. She is much more social and it helps that we got her as a puppy. Couldnt be happier, protective bomb proof girl without the intense energy and nervousness.

I have had 6 GSDs over 25 years. Mine all came from German GSDs with Schutzhund levels. My latest came with 10 generations of Schutzhund German lines. That have competed and won Champion awards. My dogs have been very healthy, no hip dysplasia and well trained. I give them my time, socialize them from puppy time. I socialize first to children, stranger children from parks and pet stores. I go to contractor lumberyards and ask every guy to great my dogs. Hence I can take my dogs anywhere. Yes they cost more, but given what I save in Vet bills and quality of life, it is worth it. They are black and red in color, beautiful dogs. They are crazy about me, get very excited when I come home. They have protected me from potential burglars multiple times. Every burglar has escaped my home quickly except one who was held in place by my GSD Heidi until the police arrived. My dogs know the police are good guys.

We have a special breed of GSD that is a cross between a typical black shepard (mother) and a Belgian Tervuryn (father). She is one of the most beautiful shepards I've seen. She looks like a cross between a typical black and tan shepard and a Malinoix. Beautiful tan and black coat without the saddle. Medium size, about 65 lbs. Shorter coat length than the long haired Tervuryn, more the same length as the black shepard. But she has the coloring of the Tervuryn. Perfect posture and features. She could be a show dog if her pedigree were allowed. But she's also very sassy and high strung. Great guard dog too.

It got to the point that I felt like I could just talk to him and he could do whatever I said. My grandmother had dementia and started to wander and get lost at night, the dog would open the door himself and go get her and bring her home. He was amazing. I have had two west German GSD they both were excellent dogs great obedience and very protective. I am retired police officer currently have a 3 yoa Czech male got him at 8 wks old. Now let’s just say he has been a lot to deal with much more difficult than my two west German dogs but through a lot of training obedience along with bite work training he is turning into a totally awesome dog. His prey drive was thru the roof so had to work on his defense drive get the prey drive and defense in balance and has made a huge difference in him. I agree with some of you in regards to a working line dog not being great for a family with children. Since there is a lot of work and training that should be done with these dogs it takes time every single day and these dogs want to work if they don’t work they get bored and then you get behavior issues. If you can’t train and have no clue how to please I would ask find a qualified trainer that knows the working lines and how to properly train them but you have to be involved as well you can’t expect to send the dog off for weeks at a time and then think when you get the dog back it will be fine. If you don’t know how to keep training the dog and not involved guess what you just wasted a bunch of money most likely. Anyway just my two cents worth

Dr. Lindsay , This is my first ( But not last ) time seeing one of your videos. I only have had German Shepherds as dogs , considering the ONLY dog to ever bite me was a GSD when I was 14 and a paperboy , He was a retired police dog and when i tell you he was good at his job ? THAT'S AN UNDERSTATEMENT. The Police and Animal control showed up as well as my father and they wanted the dog put down but left the decision to me. He had jumped the fence as think he must have felt i got to close. He tore my hand up and jumped back over the fence. But as i looked into his eyes i could tell he wasn't mean as i had walked by him about 500 times without any incident . I told my Dad No, I wanted him to live. Now my father trained GSD'S while in the Airforce at a top secret nuclear base that has long since been shutdown. My Dad showed me pictures of his dogs , He even had a solid red one ( Not orange or redish ) but red as a crayon. And i fell in love with them after he showed me those pictures when i was about 5. He even had one standing on its hind legs with his front paws in the air while my dad was pointing his .45 at his head. Still to this day one of the funniest pictures I've ever seen. I absolutely LOVED your video and subscribed to your channel. God bless you , and as you see by my profile picture is Loki , at 7 weeks his ears went fully erect and well the rest is history as in that photo he was less than a year old and is now 6. He likes Females more than male humans but will play fetch with anybody and is GREAT with kids. Again thanks for posting this video.

They’re great dogs who can make mistakes trying to do their jobs, and I’m so glad you saw that even at a young age ❤ your story made me cry a bit haha. It reminds me of a time I met a veteran at a hunting store who had one of the calmest low drive malinois I’ve ever met. He let me pet and play with his malinois while I gushed over her he told me he will only ever have malinois or gsds as they always led him to safety during his time serving. He said “even in the lowest visibility I’d just keep my eyes on them and had no choice but to put all my faith in them. I couldn’t see anything but them, and somehow they brought me home safe every single time. I’ll never go a day in my life without one in my home.” ❤ hats off to her breeder though, I’ve never met a more docile “pure bred” Belgian malinois in my life. 😂

why is every moderately large dog being labeled as "Huge" these days? Also, this is riddled with inaccuracies. Anyone recommending any working line GSD as a family pet should not be trusted. Every working line shepherd is a huge responsibility. Nobody with specialization in GSD will recommend a working shepherd over a show shepherd for simple family pet role. You don't go for a working line unless you are serious about protection and really know what you are doing. Now if you want a family protection dog (not just a pet), then I could see the west german working line being a decent recommendation, but again, only if you really know what you are doing. Furthermore, DDR are not the largest, and czech GSD is the exact same genetic stock as DDR. It's essentially the same dog, and there's not really significant, pervasive differences between the two. There's also a long lost American working stock that had totally straight backs and square profile. I had these growing up, but couldn't really say any more about them because their history was nearly totally lost. I haven't seen any around for maybe a decade.

I have a DDR /Czech 100 lb Bi-color male today, I have had straight DDR dogs 20 years ago, and my first one was a black sable that came from the wall after it came down in 1989. There is a big difference between my Wallace (today) and "Scary Barry"(from the wall) in type and temperament. Big difference. I also have Wallaces' straight DDR 13 yr. old great-grandmother (Gela Vom Parchimer Land) She weighs in at a "hefty" 60 lbs tops. I had a couple other Parchimer Land females back in the early 90's - and they were small like Gela but all are heavy boned and near perfect in structure. Just amazing. When I first laid eyes on Barry my heart was lost to the DDR GSD, although my first working import was WG working line Uwe Vom Kirschental son. He was a big oaf, and wonderful with children. Speaking of which, my female DDR's have all been great with kids. The males, neh. And yes, the European bloodlines have become mixed in the past 20 years, but there are a handful of breeders out there who strive to keep the DDR lines pure. I do have to say I hardily disagree with you about a working line GSD not being a good family dog, in fact there is none better - IMO - when they are brought up and properly trained. they will protect with their lives., but I do recommend females over males for small children. It all boils down to responsible breeding and training of these magnificent animals.

@@thorobredcowgirl1935 The difficulty with recommending breeds for families with children is that potentially you can find individuals of any breed that will be fine in a family setting -- but that does not make the breed suited to families with small children as a whole. Just like you would not expect a guardian breed to excel as a gun dog, it does not make sense to expect serious guardian breeds to excel as family pets. You can be skilled as an owner and have compatible individuals of any given breed, but that does not make them the best overall breed choice for family. Honestly, small children don't suit any dog. If you are swamped with the children, what time do you have for a dog? I worked with abandoned dogs, and this is a very common theme with families with small children. But, if they absolutely MUST, there are definitely much more suitable overall breeds out there, and nobody should be recommending guarding breeds with any sharpness or herding tendencies.

I rescued a GSD. He had escaped from his family just before they were going to euthanise him (because they were moving abroad). Then I discovered that he had been taught to attack on command and you might be surprised to know how many teenagers point at a friend and say “kill”. Also he became afraid of being taken away from me so I carried a muzzle with me. People leave a dog alone if it’s wearing a muzzle so it kept him happy. There were other problems when I first got him. My son still has the scars from a dispute over food. Fortunately the dog totally trusted me so I was able to bring out his best side and he was the love of my life.

I have a white German shepherd/ husky mix adopted from a kill shelter 2 years ago when he was 6 months old. I had never heard of a white German shepherd until my sister-in-law, a local GSD breeder, told me they are a thing but rare. She was surprised I managed to find even a mix at a shelter. Our dog looks like an arctic wolf and has traits of both breeds. Super intelligent, loyal, sweet, active, loves belly rubs. I didn't see any mention of the white version in this video.

My GASD Abbagale has the sweetest disposition, laid back, good guardian, great with my Daughter who’s 8 and gets along well with my parents Morkie. I adopted Abbagale from our local animal shelter. She is such a rare gem, couldn’t be any happier and she really does stick to me like Velcro…😂 Anywhere in the house I go and sit down, she lays right beside me. She is truly an awesome GS and so happy I found/adopted her.💗

Unfortunately the show lines have many health problems, especially with their spines and hips. When you look on the backs of these dogs you will recognize that they are higher in the front than in the back. And this causes many of the health issues the dogs suffer from.

Both of my GSDs are rescues. One was 1.5 years old when I got her, the other was just weaned. The older one has the American show dog look, however it was bred at a place where they only raised and sold their GSDs to law enforcement. The younger is a sable, and he is definitely has a different attitude than the older one.

Wrong info yet again by someone that doesnt know, east german ddr doesnt have a high prey drive they are more of a defensive dog used in police work protection they have big bones too, the west german working line has the highest prey drive for the german shepherds they used west working lines to breed with the original ddr to make what is current, original ddr dont exist anymore due to the split and mixed breeding.

@@h4b2_k66I will vouch for this. My west german working male has a prey drive that's insane sometimes. It helps in training though when you can focus that energy. I have 3 gsd mixes with a wide range of personalities. My oldest gsd is part coyote, and she is an incredibly smart Houdini. She is very laid back, an expert couch potato; and when my kids were around, she was an excellent Nana dog. I didn't know she knew how to growl until a stranger came close to my back yard where her 'pups' were playing. My midaged gsd male is longhaired and is an adorable dufus! Due to his many handicaps (poor dear was abused before taken by the spca and found his way to our home), he has been the hardest to train, but he so wants to please. My 3 yr-old gsd pup is not the smartest bulb in the bunch, but she has been the best to train. Were it not for her dog aggression, I would never need to leash her. Still, she repeatedly picks fights she cannot win. Her main target is my oldest female gsd due to her jealousy of my affection, and she always ends up worse for wear of the 2. She has also picked fights with the male who is twice her weight also to her detriment but has not learned. Still trying to figure her out, but she's getting spayed as soon as I come up with the funds because no other dog is safe around her anymore if I pet them.

Hello Doctor, Thank you very much for the very informative presentation about the major members of a very interesting and protective family of regal looking dogs. I have never owned one, but several friends and neighbors have had them on farms and in homes over the past years. There were two that I remember, that were owned by persons who did not invest the time and skills to make these dogs confident and safe. Sadly, both dogs were euthanized because of owner failure.

When my dad was in the Cdn Navy in the 60s, someone smuggled a white pup out of Germany and into the base. Dad knew people who wanted a dog like that, and he introduced them - and dog had a farm home right away. He was a good dog, not aggressive, allowed loose on the farm, horses and cattle - caused no trouble even for the cats, but he did like to do his "rounds" every morning, checking all the surrounding farms. When he was about 10, someone shot him. Lesson in keeping your dog safe.

That was very interesting. I knew there were several different types of German Shepherds. I have always had mixed German Shepherds. When I finally decided to get a pure bred, it was the German Showline German Shepherd. I did not get papers because for some reason the sire of my 2 GSD mother was bred to a male overseas and then shipped to the US. The owner of the sire tried for a long time to get his papers but never could. The mother of my GSD was papered but there wasn't much anyone could do about it. I looked for a long time. I wanted a black and red long coat GSD. I had no idea how expensive they were. Just by chance I found someone near me that was selling puppies for 850!!! That was a lot better than other prices of 3500 and up I was being told. I was told they were black and red long coat west German showline GSD. They are probably some of the smartest dogs I have ever owned. If young children are in the home, I would only recommend the showline group as family dogs. In my opinion the others have too high drive to be a family dog.

20 years experience with GSDs. Mostly a nice video, however will add the following comments: 1. It is possible to temperament test a GSD to get an approximation of type - yes, back yard breeders are a problem but for the problem that shelters are full of GSDs where the people who had surrendered their dogs didn't realize that they were adopting a "working breed" dog. All GSDs need a job, even if it is just to be an included household pet for walks and play times! 2. Please check your local rescues and shelters - there are lots of great GSDs available for reasonable fees, no need to pay $2,500 for a puppy when a $425 process rescue or a $95 shelter dog will be just a great! 3. Process rescues are where the GSDs are fostered in private homes with fanatics about the breed - these GSDs will show much better than a stressed, unworked GSD in a county or city animal control shelter... The difference being that the process rescue GSD will already be in a private home, decompressed and you will get a great look at the dog's personality when making an adoption decision. 4. These dogs live 9-12 years on average - and they fall fully in love with their humans... once the dog adapts to the new home. 3 days to blend in, 3 weeks or so to fully decompress and 3 months to bond (the Rocky Kanata 3-3-3 general rule of thumb, look up his youtube channel, it is awesome) --- it is a fallacy that the best bonding only comes from puppyhood - yes, it's easier/faster, however an adult GSD will bond and adjust per the 3-3-3 comment above - just give space and allow the GSD to process the new home and humans in the family... 5. 24Petconnect.com - you can look up dogs available in your local area! An advantage of going thru a process rescue while a few hundred dollars more than the local shelter is that the dog gets that home decompression time, shows better their personality - and local rescues do pull dogs from the shelters... sharing this inside baseball 411 for anyone who is thinking of getting a GSD! Lastly, ADOPT, Don't Shop! It's a tough economy, there are literally hundreds of great dogs every week getting the euthanasia needle because of lack of homes. If you have the time and some resources to feed, vet and play, you will be adding an awesome new family member! These GSDs are loyal and love their humans, but just need time to learn their new pack of humans! Overall a good video - just wanted to share experience from the rescue side of things. Don't overlook rescues and go to some local meet and greet events where you can meet the dogs!

BULLSH.T. All GSDs have elements of protection in them. The degree will depend on their breeding and genetics. But within any litter there will be dogs with different traits and personalities. It takes an experienced GSD owner/breeder/trainer to identify those traits and personalities at an early age. If you want a family GSD, find a family breeder, where the dogs are raised in the house, with kids and other animals. Don’t buy from somebody who raises the dogs in runs in the back garden. Use your common sense, pick a dog that has been raised in the way you would bring your dog up.
