I never go by ratings. A book that is a one star for one reader could be a five star for me or vice versa. Readers are so different with their tastes and what triggers them. No two readers are truly the same. If I'm interested in the synopsis, I will give the book a try to see for myself if it's for me. I mainly read reviews after reading a book unless I'm trying to find out triggers that I don't like to read in books. In my opinion, reviews are more useful than ratings. I have thoughts about only putting reviews on Goodreads and not leaving a star rating.

First of all, this was a great idea for a video. i do this all the time. i love booktube and getting excited about books and getting book recommendations. but, after a few disappointing experiences with some hyped up books (I could give examples but why be negative here? you are such a positive person; i don't want to ruin the vibe), i have learned to check out reviews. I do just what you did: check out why the lowest raters rated low-what bothered them, and then a few of the highest raters-what enthused them so much (albeit for hyped up books that's not so necessary). Then I decide if the things I've "found out" make me still want to read it or give me a clear reason why I do not want to. So many books, so little time; so I have to try my best to filter through my choices. As far as ratings, 3 doesn't sound that low to me since I am not as high a rater as you are. When I rate: 5 means I thought this book was amazing and would read it again, and again; 4 means I really liked it a lot but there must have been a thing or two that kept me from rating it 5; 3 means middle of the road-I'm not sorry I read it, I probably enjoyed reading it because I love reading, but there is too much going against it for me to give it a 4. Anything below 3...well let's keep the vibe positive :)

I probably would have gotten rid of all but the lowest..That one I would give a good 50 pages and if I wasn't loving it I would DNF. My lowest on my shelves is The Circle at 3.43 which is a bit out of my normal read but sounded interesting at a used bookstore. This did inspire me to try 5 books that I don't think I will love The Circle to be one of them and see if I can get rid of any off my shelves!

My good reads is a mess! Basically I started using it as a way to keep track of books I’ve read and ones I want to read. I don’t differentiate between books owned either so, yeah, it’s a mess and doesn’t lend itself to a project like this. Also, I seldom read reviews or look at ratings. I’ll read a short synopsis and then go by a gut feeling if it’s something I want to read or not. I will also add books to my lists based on what I hear from trusted book tubers (like you)! Of these five, the only one that may have interested me at first was about Mozart’s sister. But I’m no longer interested in it. There is another book about her that I have on my wants list though that I’m still interested in reading someday.

I try to give a book 100 pages. If it is so awful and I can’t make it to 100 pages I DNF it. I have read books that grabbed me on page 80. I will never go by other people’s ratings or opinions. I have to read a book first myself. I’ve read a lot of good books that other people didn’t like.

I don't think that 3 stars, Liked it, is a bad rating on Goodreads. I have enjoyed and rated many books that I rated as three stars. For me, 4 and 5 stars are reserved for truly amazing books that I would read again. In addition, reaction to a book is so subjective.
@skeletonkeybooks
@skeletonkeybooks 3 дня назад
I totally agree. Even 2 stars is "okay." But I have noticed that when the GR average starts dropping below 3.7 or so, it's time to look at the ratings distribution and see what people did or didn't like about it. Between 3 and 3.75 average usually means either it was divisive (not necessarily a bad thing) or it didn't generate much buzz/excitement in its targeted audience.

I totally agree with fellow subscriber, @catreadsbooks. I don't not pick-up, purchase a book that interests me based on other readers reviews/ratings. I'm not a reader that is in the pool with others that selects books because of their popularity -- it has to interest me. I'm probably one of the few readers out there that has never read ( nor have an interest to ) Tomorrrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow... Lessons in Chemistry... Fourth Wing.

All of my books are not uploaded to Goodreads, so I can't know for sure which book in my TBR is the lowest rated. Of those that are on Goodreads, After the Gold by Erin McRae and Racheline Maltese comes in at 2.98. However it's an e-book and only 228 pages, so it's not taking up any space. The first physical book is The Target: Target of Opportunity/The Loner by Justine Davis and Linda Turner. It's two Harlequin romantic suspense books that they published together. It's at 3.17 but it only has 6 reviews total! That's another thing you should keep in mind, how many reviews does the book have. If it's been widely read and still has a low rating, then I would tend to avoid it. Otherwise, it may just not have found the right readers.

The first one sided like you would like it. I was glad you went read the higher ratings. I've read books that had low ratings and loved it and big ratings she despised them! I can't go by goodreads reviews anymore. I'll look at book stores, Amazon, goodreads, and see what those ratings average out to. I've seen ratings given on goodreads just because somebody didn't like the author, so one stara always. I've seen booktubers tell us to go give "this book", a one start because she didn't like it, or the author said sunsetting that upset her. It gets ridiculous. At least Amazon reads posts and goes from there. And yes, I'm wire well aware of what's going on with Amazon right now, which is why I always wait a week to post a Netgalley book after it's publication. I was rejected, but not banned of a couple books. Sadly I had to lie and tell them i got the from the library and wouldn't they like to see others reviews so maybe a customer would see a good review and buy it. They went quiet.

I read Confessions of a Curious Bookseller and gave it too stats. Originally the format also intrigued me, but after awhile it started feeling old .The book was way too long and the MC very unlikeable, but in the end we are all different as readers. Usually, I agree , but I've had quite a few 4 star books that were rated below 3.5 on Goodreads and I had a 5 star that was a 3.37. That one was The Hawthorne School. Of my current TBR list (I occasionally go through my lowest rated on Goodeads and decide if I still want to read them), my lowest-rated book currently is on my kindle Homeschooled with a 2.8 rating; in its defense it only has 10 ratings. It has been on my TBR since 2012. Ithink if I don't read it by the end of the year, I should just delete it off my kindle. It is les than 200 pages and was a freebie.

Please, please do a review when you are finished with "Confessions of A Book...". I would have unhauled the same ones, esp. the one about the girls school. NOT a good example for you g girls. Unfortunately there are so many like that. I know people disagree with me when I say that. Replies back or in person, " it's ONLY" A book". Young minds are impressionable AND immature, we ALL were.I usually don't go by ratings. One I wished I HAD looked into more was "The Pumpkin Spice Cafe" by Laurie Gilmore. I had heard it mentioned more than once as a cosy Fall read. Grumpy guy, happy go lucky girl. Bought it😑😑 More than 3/4 of way through, explicit sex. I mean EXPLICIT. Was angry I wasted my money. I do not read bks. like that. The cover was so cute, cozy and perfect for Fall. Learned from this experience. "Don't judge a book by it's cover!" HA! No judgement comments please.
