Honestly don't know if Dorothea is a better drummer or a better instructor. I'm a musician, but not a drummer and the way she explains techniques and how to apply them is top notch!
Dorothea you rock! One of the basic rudiments I find a lot of people don't play correctly is a flam..more often than not it's played more like simultaneous notes played with both sticks rather than the grace note and primary note combination. I was taught long ago to hold the grace note stick about an inch or inch and a half above the head, the primary note stick almost straight up, and simply let them drop at the same time. The law of physics (the grace note stick will strike the head just before the primary note) guarantees a proper flam. I play snare drum in two pipe bands and proper flam execution is one of the first rudiments I teach my students. Excellent video I'll bookmark it.
It’s amazing how you can a basic rudiment and turn it up. Just started learning (at 59) and learning so much. All these tips are making it more fun. Thanks
When my curriculum sports and games and having football shoes at primary 🏫 and secondary 🏫 academic performance UPSR ( 2004) 5C and PMR ( 2007) 4C, 3B after I finished my SPM ( 2009) I will not going back to with my mother lived her small towns liked LAWAS. I will stayed at Kuching Sarawak's City's and find a Job's Supermarket Everrise BDC at Kuching Sarawak's City's starting at 6 January's 2010 . Worked as sale's assistant, storekeeper and Cashier's with minimum salary RM 600 and opening account 🏦 with identity card number and buying a new wallet.
She really should finish all these of with a "and don't forget to eat your vegetables". Most important thing for cross discipline & life lessons, "start slow and work up your speed, make sure you play it Clean".
Honestly I wished that Dorthea was my drum teacher in shcool when I first took up drumming at 11. She knows alot and actually teaches you how to play. Our music teacher at my shcool would complain that I was playing too loud even when I just lightly tap.
Love Dorethea and her being a proponent of the Rudiments. Great teacher !!. Best Grandma ever!!. She is 1 year older than I. In 2019, I was able to resurrect my playing drums after 50 Years (1969). Watching her and the many other terrific drummers on this and other Channels, has educated me immensely. I don't play GIGs, only recreationally, playing about 1 hour a day to My Music at Home: CCR, Mellencamp, Stones, Beatles, Clapton, Winwood, Cars, Talking Heads, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and many more, including Linda Ronstadt & Bonnie Rait . Who knows, maybe someday soon, a bunch of geriatric musicians audition for a "drummer" in like age. Dee, should give a Tuning lesson. Love the sound she has achieved form her kit! I only strive and struggle through my ignorance to get my PdP Concept Maple Kit to sound neraly as good. God Bless Dee.... you are an astute instructor.
I feel pretty sure I've heard at least the last three or four of them used as main beats in songs already. If I think of which ones, I will come back and add them here. Always neat seeing rudiments and how easily they can be applied, even to dif. time signatures with quite different sounds!
Why can’t all these, “master” drummers explain things like her?! I learned more usable stuff in this short video than an hour with any of the greats. Who, for some reason, always show a 4/4, AC/DC beat for like, 8 measures!?? Yeah, we get it! Anyways……
Absolutely the coolest grandma drummer ever, As a drummer of 3 years. I've haven't used these rudiments in a while deffinetly gonna use them more because Dorthea inspires me alot to become a better drummer and inspires many other people to take up drumming.
After that's I will going to musical instruments learning centre and Institution motorcycle and car driving and also taking computer programming short courses, words, typing masters, Microsoft office, Excel and PowerPoints . Before I waiting for results SIJIL PELAJARAN MALAYSIA ( 2009) on 17 March 2010 when my results SIJIL PELAJARAN MALAYSIA ( 2009)are excellent with 8B+, Super Credit's in Malay Language's, Bahasa Inggeris, Moral Knowledge, History and Mathematics and all Subjects credit's principal accountant, Economic and Additional Science I'm very proud of it's. I will buying a laptop's and printer and mobile phone doing a password and email . I will applied for a scholarship's higher technical education polytechnic Kuching Sarawak's City's and College's ICATS PPKS Diplomma BTEC Mechanical Engineering Manufacturing Semester 1 until 8 with minimum CGPA ; 3.89 after I convocation and graduated I will applied for a Job's oil's and gas industry's at Miri Sarawak's and BINTULU Sarawak's at 2014 & 2015.
Hi Drumeo and Hi Dorothea, thank you for sharing what I believe are very good exercices and new ways to improve my drumming. Cheers from Switzerland, the land of the Swiss Army Triplet...
SHLM & HaB (peace & love). The Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah, as what He told Moshah (Exodus 3:14), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. There is a curse to the G-o-d name (Isaiah 65:11-12), preserved in the Hebrew Scriptures. All followers of the Messiah are to do the 7 appointed times (Leviticus 23), but no more animal sacrifices, following the Crucifixion of the Messiah. We are now of the order of MLK TSDQ (King, righteous), to Whom ABRaHM tithed. Ask the Messiah to be your personal Savior. He said to him, I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6). All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of Hayah (Romans 3:23). The wages for sin is death but the gift of ALaHYM is Everlasting Life through Messiah Yahushgh our Master (Romans 6:23). That if you confess with your mouth the Master Yahushgh and believe in your heart that ALaHYM raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved (Romans 10:9). He Himself is an Atoning Offering for our sins, and not for ours only but also for all the world (1 John 2:2). The Messiah died on the cross, & Resurrected three days later (presenting Himself as First Fruits to the Father). Please ask Him to be your Savior. He is the ONLY way to Everlasting Life.
Many thanks Dorothea, you are a great inspiration!!!! Drag Paradiddle #1 was the best for my ears! It's surprisingly wants to have some odd time musical arrangement above it when applied to the kit. Some smooth progressive melodic rocky thing :D
Thank you for these! I'm a guitarist venturing into the rhythm world and it's helping my guitar immensely. Please please please do more of these rudiment videos. I love practicing these!
Rarely here an American (someone will tell me she's Canadian now) call a drag a drag, usually they say Ruff. Interesting! Is this a generational, regional, or genre specific thing? In England I've never heard anyone call a drag a ruff, half drag, 3 stroke roll etc. When we say ruff we mean 4 stroke roll, 3 as an ornament and one principal note. 🤔 Love a bit of Dorothea
I was like why did they speed it up naaah she sped up lol, Ratamacue was pretty easy with a little practice shows me I've been trying to avoid drag and bounce so much forgot both are required tools
Welllll... I'll be... I've been playing grandmas when I warm up. I alternate them. Really enjoy practicing that and playing it on a djembe drum. R ll R ll R ll RL L rr L rr L rr LR
Gong back like 40 yrs but I learned the Swiss trips with alternating sticking. Are you using a alternate method or am I thinking of something different?
I'm just imagining a situation of street entertainment that had a drum set and that random people came up and played the drums and Dorothy walked up and everyone scoffed and then she shredded the hell out of it. I would love to see that video!
For me learning to play is what I need to put in, and what I need to leave out.. You can't learn everything, there just aren't enough hours and you cannot remember them all at once. Plus, they are pretty boring sometimes. These seem to have qualities relevant to most rudiments and I am thankful that I can narrow them down to 5 now. I started playing parradiddles as triplets and just doubling the last and first note on each hand, so rlrlrlrlrlrllrlrlrlrlrlrrlrlrlr etc. It just seems more natural and I find the triplet feel is easier to play and I am picking up doubles, and I want to play this whereas rlrrlrll gets old fast.
Grateful for the fact you are demonstrating these rudiments in such a uncluttered way. I hardly practice (lack of discipline and focus, alsof because of ADD) ...this is accesible to me. Greetings from the Netherlands
Rudimental drummers are cool. Sometimes the grooves they play seem a little tight for my taste but I do enjoy how they unlock tougher Polly Rhythms through simple sticking patterns. This is what I find most useful about learning all the rudiments at various tempos
I'm looking forward to trying these rudiments on double-kick. [edit]: (Particularly the double-drag tap, which would sound super heavy!) That beat after the single ratamacue was really funky. I'd like to see some funk-orientated stuff from Dorothea.
