I am always impressed when an actor makes such a big impression with so little screen time. Even though he had more screen time than these, I was disappointed when Michael Stuhlbarg didn't get a nomination for Call Me by Your Name. That one scene on the sofa with Timothee Chalamet should have clinched it for him.
It's interesting how some performances are overlooked while others receive nominations. Of course, lots of factors go into that (promotion, precursors), but the "small" performances that get noticed are indeed an impressive accomplishment.
I am surprised that the Academy remembered her given such a brief appearance in the film. But I've seen that many who saw the performance thought it not only memorable but worthy of a win!
Jane Alexander was electrifying in her 5 minutes (!) of screen time. At the time she was the favorite of some to win, including me, but it was speculated that her role was too small. Ironically she lost the Oscar to a role even shorter than her own. Also, it's interesting to see that Alexander's subtle, sustained performance, another reason she may not have won, was the complete opposite of Beatrice Straight's overly theatrical role
It’s a bit reductive to call Straight overly theatrical, no? Network is more theatrical overall than ATPM and Straight served the material she was given.
@@jacobskinner3522Maybe this person is reacting more to Chayefsky’s dialogue than to Straight’s performance (I hope). I found Alexander’s work here a bit too subtle. I like my cameos brash, bold or messy. 😊
I haven’t seen The Paradine Case ,Farwell My Lovely or Dead End yet. I think either Hermione or Jane Alexander. Alexander gives a performance of quiet urgency. She doesn’t tend to overreact. Love her In Testament where she had those bigger moments but her silence in certain scenes are so effective and she trusts it and the quiet moments. I have always admired her.
So true - sometimes "less" is "more." and the great actors know the difference. From what I saw of Paradine Case, there had to be more for Barrymore to have received a nomination, because she's barely in the film after her scenes were cut.
I rewatched The Farmers Daughter recently and she and Charles Bickford steal nearly every scene they are in! I keep thinking I am going to watch The Paradine Case .
This list requires we do our homework. Some of these films are rather obscure, but this is no excuse. Academy addicts must do their homework :) i have seen most, but not a few. Miles and Baddeley stand out for me in these films. Shout out to the great Jane Alexander. Her extraordinary performance in the riveting Testament I will always remember. I think most of these nominations were for a body of work from the actors nominated.
@@oscarman42 No, Dead End and Dodsworth are the two I need to see. I may have seen Dodsworth, but I forget lol. I love these lists which illuminate some part of Oscar history's past
Sylvia Miles! You gotta love her in Midnight Cowboy as Cass. She’s basically in her own film here- chewing away at the scenery and completely going off the rails. Poor Jon Voight, as her scene partner, didn’t get much to do opposite her once she descends into terrifying fury and rage over having to pay him for services rendered. Miles absolutely perfected the indelible “cameo role”-in both of her nominated turns. Unfortunately, her nominations came in years with strong slates of nominees and she was quickly overshadowed by others in her category in both 1969 (I’d rank her 4th behind Burns, York & Hawn) and 1975 (I’d put her 3rd behind Tomlin and Blakley). But, as with many incredible Supporting Actresses in their respective films, there’s never quite enough of her to go around.
@@oscarman42 maybe McDormand for Fargo, Colman for The Favorite or Patricia O'Neal in Hud in a way, their characters are important to their respective movies, but considering the screen time, it's kinda weird they won for Lead (all great victories, and I'll go with the importance '-' )
Hermione Baddeley was simply stunning. The range, the rage, all in all an amazing performance... I agree that it is wonderful when an actor (of any gender) can make such an impact with little screen time. And I think that we all agree that if not the best, then surely one of the top-5 performances to ever win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is Beatrice Straight for Network
It speaks volumes when a performance is remembered for so little (if any) words or screen time. I wish there had been a bit more background into Baddeley's character - perhaps a few more minutes may have propelled her to a win, as it did for Straight.
i'd like to give an oscar for supporting actor to Luciano Miele for role of hotel manager in Ocean's 12. i think his total screen time is less than minute, but man, what he makes of it. and all totally in line and place, as in: small role mustn't shine so as to overshadow main character. nothing like that, just essencial. when he says: "sta arrivando Julia Roberts..." he puts all into this, and all that as should be: frustration with trouble coming, determination to overcome all with his professionalism, just general acceptance with grim but calm face, of all shit this world is throwing at him as hotel manager. 🤩
After watching the Paradine Case I think it's a shame they cut Ethel Berrymore's scenes they could have easily cut some of the scenes of the wife odf Gregory Pecks's wife's character .I think Ethel is the character I feel the most sorry for really the only one I feel sorry for.Well acted but it took too long to get going .The other thing is once they are in court I quikly figured out what happened although I had a hunch before that.
@oscarman42 although I like the accents, I'm not a fan of anything British. Not even James bond. Since we are talking short screen time how about Miss Garland in Judgement at Nuremberg
