This is a very timely video for me. I have been trying different things from 100yards and in. Taking the extra club and a less powerful swing has been my fix. Good to see you mention this. Thanks for the video. Cheers!
Great tips, especially #4. As a 10.5 hcp I try to always take enough club to get me somewhere between the hole (90% perfect strike) and the back of the green (100% perfect strike), especially if there are front bunkers or a false front to contend with. The one mistake you didn't include is lack of commitment to the shot. Too often, I'm still thinking about the 3 putt on the previous hole or "maybe I should I be hitting PW instead of GW because of the wind?" or "if I can make 3 more pars, I'll shoot my best round this year" when I'm standing over the ball. Total commitment and focus on this shot and only this shot is what I'm working on.
Great advice... thanks! My biggest mistakes? Apart from chunking juicy wedge shots, 3-putts is the next curse and keeping drives in play, i.e. on the fairway.
Great video! I’m watching it in February after having surgery in the off season. 3 weeks till I’m fully recovered and I can start swinging my clubs again!!
Winter golf up here in the Pacific Northwest forces me to use my Gap Wedge from my Iron set when I'm 100y and in. Its a bit more forgiving in the wet climate.
Good video keep up the good work,my problem is a straight push right with my irons, also getting bunker shots to come out high and land soft, mine barely clear the lip and don’t stop the run to the far side of the green.
Great info Matt. Always learn a thing or two! I've only got a handful of rounds left up in Wisconsin before it starts snowing so gonna try to put as much work in as I can these coming weeks
I've learned over this summer that when I use a 9 iron w/ half a backswing ( 9 o'clock) and normal downswing gets me 100 yards ,give or take pending on roll , every time.... in fact , I achieved my only hole in 1( mon Aug 9th 6:45 pm ) on a 100 yard par three with 9 iron..
Thank you Sir! Can you do some content on the best chipping method and club recommendations for a high capper ?I've seen all your videos just hoping for a new one.(I have a big round with my buddies for our neighborhood trophy in Wednesday). Short game always costs me tons of strokes
I'm hitting longer distance clubs to make up for my swing and its working to a tee. Can you perhaps do a video on the different wedge types and their best use? Thanks coach!
That's it mate, think you way around. 20 Years ago, 8 iron went 160 mts, now only 120, due to age and bad back. So from a 100 in, I can go from a SW to a 8I depending on what I want to do. But i always found the biggest issue for most golfers at that distance is commitment. Cheers
Tip #3 is spot on. I sort of figured that one out over time and it has helped a lot. Along with tip #5. Taking a big backswing on short shots just seems to increase your chance of error in my mind. But that means you need to practice those sort of shots too. Good things to do at the range is come up with some method of applying 80%, 60% and so on until you are comfortable with it. Good stuff.
Started using my pitching wedge from 80-50 yards out. Hitting greens way more consistently. Especially when I have a branch or something hanging over the line. This works!
The 8 and 9 iron pitch shot is highly underused. I know that for 100 yards I can do a 3/4 54 to bring it in high, 1/2 9i to bump and skip and about a 1/3 8i to bump and roll. Practice at the range and figure out your options depending on your situation. Is the front of the green open? Pin in the front? Over a bunker? All different club shots.
Great video...ive always heard to take less club and swing EASY not harder. Honestly i only have 3 things wrong with my game, Driving, Chipping, and Putting, other than that...lol. I would say that ONE (of many) problems is trying to get the right distance from ball to club with my stance.
Wow,spot on,I had 7 shots from 75m to 105m on Saturday 1st rd clubies, chunked most of them fat with big divot, also pulling them miles left,I’m sure it’s the unnecessary weight transfer, gotta start with weight on front foot and keep it there as u said,to hit driver in prime spots then doing that, with 5 three putts my score of 82 should of been 8 better at least,so yes I’ll be doing that next Saturday.thanks bruva..
I really appreciate the comment to hit the best spot on the green, not necessarily to the pin location. Longer putts are better than shorter chips. Great advice Matt.
Great tips Matt. I can hit my pitching wedge a hundred however I need to swing hard which usually creates a pull, very aggravating. I’m going to try a choked up nine iron. At a hundred yards you should be putting it on the green most of the time. Thanks buddy.
Thanks for that, much needed! When golfing on a budget, how should I approve purchasing clubs? Do I start with fitting once I purchase a used set? High tech is the aim, forgiveness is key, and enjoying the game is the goal!
love ya man! my sweetie and I got paired with a couple last year with your alignment pole cover. we chatted you up and had a great round! stay well....
I'm a right handed 20 handicap golfer my mid range iron shot's always go left hooking or just way left of target. What could be causing this? My drives are pretty good and my 50 yards and in game isn't terrible either. My 2nd shot on long par 4s and 5s is what kills my score because I'll hit my ball in the trees, out of bounds or in the water if that's on the left side of the fairway. This obviously adds at least 1-3 strokes per hole to my score and it happens a lot. Help!
Biggest struggle, hitting a lot of "fat shots" especially with wedges. Chips have now 95% become chip n rolls with 7 iron due to no consistency with wedge
My issue is that I notice that with mid to long irons, I start getting a little too "weight shifty" at times. If I can remind myself to stay still and solid, then I'm golden. it happens sometimes, so that's a good thing. Most times, I hit flush
3/4 swing with wedges I'm a big believer in that too. I never hit "down" that is a death move for sure! Sometimes I'll even take a tad more club and open the face just a touch to help activate the bounce and stop from digging which is real easy to do with a wedge especially the 60. I keep my weight pretty centered with all wedges. There really is no need to transfer weight as they are scoring clubs not distance clubs. U agree with all this good job MSG 👏 👍
Hi Mat, I'm a 13 h/c I've a good shoulder turn but pulling long irons, fairway woods and driver powerfully but 'straight' left some of the time and cant predict when ??????
Hey Steve, At times I do the same so I watch my club path to be square not swinging out to in but the opposite, I also cut my follow through so I’m finishing toward the target line. It helps me, commit to the shot. Hope that helps.
Arnold Palmer was giving tips on tv and he was asked " what a weekend player could do that would make the game easier and more enjoyable?" He answered " leave the wedge's in the bag and get comfortable with a little 9 iron! It's easier to get good contact and better results!" Cheer's
Have a lesson with your pro and the track man. Know your wedge full and half swing distances. You then swing and commit to every shot. Doing this, and practising hard is what finally got me into single figures. More up and downs are much more fun👍
What about attack point and people who end up short siding themselves because they were going for a pin when they should’ve been going for green position
Another mistake people often make not only from 100 yards but with longer shots as well is trying to help the club get the ball in the air. The best way to get the ball in the air is solid contact.
Excellent tips. I've never heard the mantra take less club and hit it harder, but sounds like terrible advice. What do I struggle with? Having a consistent swing plane. I tend to either go too steep or too shallow. I'm fighting a way to have a consistent swing plane regardless of club selection.
I don’t get any distance out of my wedges, It’s killing my game, any suggestions on what I could be doing wrong. I can hardly get my 52 degree 100 yards.
Thats my 52 degree range too, I think our distance 'problem' is called being average (its not a problem). Increasing club head speed and spending $$$ on lessons e.g. learning how to de loft the club at impact - may help. For me, I'm happy being 100 yards on my 52. If I need to hitit further I just take a stronger club. My 7 iron still bites on the green.
Nothing wrong with that number, I hit my 51 95 yards. Soft and accurate with wedges and short irons. 5 iron 180. Driver 275, the only club I swing fast with. Still break 80 and 💩 on most golfers!
I had so many miss lippy's yesterday. Missed 2 for eagle, several birdies that turned into par's, so on and so forth! at least the line reading is improving.
