I met “Bags” at the Baked Potato in the LA area in 1981. He came to our table and chatted kindly during his break. I love his album, Bags and Trane.

Very easy as well: Chitlins Con Carne by Kenny Burell (Tenorsax Stanley Turrentine). And really groovy.

This is great, Jay. I wish someone had told me which songs to learn when I first started learning jazz. And btw, your BetterTrax are the BEST backing tracks out there. Hands down. They are AMAZING and SUPER FUN to play with! 😊 Thanks for the discount today!

A great list and a wonderful explanation...I especially like the way a beginner can play C-Jam Blues from the day !.

Excellent stuff Jay for budding beginners and buddiing improvisors. Fundamentals on I-IV-Vs and with blues turnarounds ... and pentatonics. And as you say, it gets them going at open mics and jams at an early stage. Less notes more rhythm! 😁 Set their roots and they will grow indepenently.

Ive been loving your videos Jay. I’m coming back to the saxophone from a 15 year hiatus and based on your recommendations I got a Jean Paul Tenor sax and one of your burnin mouth pieces and I love both! Thanks!

Every session has its own few that seem to get called a lot. Billie's Bounce and Au Privave seem to be popular in my area. Back at the Chicken Shack was a favorite a few years back. Watermelon Man is a popular one not listed here, though I would cheerfully not play it again for a decade. Blue Monk and Straight, No Chaser get called a ton. Better know those, probably even more than C Jam or Bags' Groove. Go to the session once, be prepared to lay out a bunch, then go home and learn the ones that got called. But don't practice a list of tunes in a vacuum: go jam _now_.
