I think it is important to point out that "Ram Cichlids" have two very different species that are sold under "Rams." German Blue Rams(Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) are what is in this video. They come in several varieties such as balloon, gold, and electric blue. They can be tricky to care for as they have been heavily line bread. The other Ram is the Bolivan Ram(Mikrogeophagus altispinosus). These fish are much hardier and do not require the more stringent water parameter of GBRs. They and can be just as colorful if properly taken care of.

I plan on doing a dwarf cichlid community setup with a pair of Agassizii dwarfs and a pair of Bolivian rams. I am debating on what third cichlid species to put as a pair with them. Then some tetras and others to add more activity to the tank.

Hello from 🇬🇧. I've kept fish for many years but stopped for many as well due to moving & many other tjings going on in my life but as with most of us it's in my blood so I'm back into the hobby now i have a house of my own. What would yiu say is a good aquarium friend for the Dwarf that stayins on the substrate? I do have: Royal convicts. (white & also the grey) . Demasoni. Albino Lab Juli' Chromide Rams I want to get: Transvestite dwarf cichlid Enigmatachromis lucanusi Apistogramma hongsloi Peacock goby Apistogramma nijsseni Traccatichthys pulcher. I assume you are going to say the one's I have shouldn't be together &/or the one's I want to get wont mix with each other &/or the one's I already have. So far they get along fine. Thanks

I have an 80 gallon tank that's way too overgrown with plants. Got rummy nosed tetras a few Cory's , and a single blue ram in it. My ram is the stand out show fish on display when I have guests over. He loves attention from strangers

The easiest cichlid to breed is the Neolamprologus Multifasciatus 20gallon tank, 2 inches of sand and some shells. Guarantee to have fry in 2 weeks.

Great content. I usually use a wavemaker to circulate my tank and move fish waste towards the filter inlet. With dwarf cichlids preferring calmer water, is this still possible to do?

Green barbs with dwarf chichlids could this be possible as tank mates, how big are my chances? I read very different comments on this topic. I have a 20 gallons with 6 green barbs, i will be upgrading the tank when the barbs get too big but they are around 1,5-2cm right now

Yes you can! The male issue with dwarfs is they can get aggressive when breeding, but generally they will get along with most fish. All try to avoid adding fish that occupy the same size area. For example with Kribs, you should look for mid and top swimming fish and avoid bottom dwellers.

I would opt for a betta fish instead. 20 gallons is where you can start looking at cichlids with longs being a better choice than 20G highs

It would be considered a medium sized cichlid. They are too big to be considered dwarfs and are more semi-aggressive

As a dwarf cichlid breeder of many years, I suggest that the term "type" is misleading. What you are presenting are species, and varieties of those species. For instance, the cockatoo dwarf cichlid (Apistogramma cacatuoides) you illustrate as the first example, is, in fact a line-bred variety often called the sunset cacatuoides; the original wild species is nowhere near as colourful. This species is capable of tolerating harder water than other species of Apistogramma, making it a suitable beginners dwarf. The rainbow cichlid has never been considered as a dwarf cichlid, growing in excess of 10cm, and it's aggression far surpasses that of any Apistogramma species. Not a good beginners species, and not one for the average community tank. Rams are also not good beginners species because they need temperatures in excess of 26°C in order to thrive otherwise they don't live very long. These sort of details need to be pointed out to aquarists who are contemplating keeping dwarf cichlids. One group of dwarf cichlids that was not included was the Tanganyikan shell dwellers. These little cichlids are a good option for aquarists who live in hard water areas and who find it difficult to soften their tap water. Kept in suitability large aquaria with appropriate tank mates they are easily maintained in colonies and breed freely for the beginner. Neolamprologus caudopunctatus is not a suitable beginner species owing to it's aggressive nature and its propensity to stalk small fishes. Whilst the photography was good in this video, I think there was room for somewhat more information about each species.

Hi Majorbruster. Thank you for your comment. Very insightful. As for the "types" the reasons why I use types instead of breed is due to search terms on google search and the RU-vid algorithm. Most searches are for "types" not breeds. I should have add that into the script to clarify and to tell my audience why I use type. Rams are listed as moderate to expert level fish on the overlay and on the blog post. Moderate is only listed because Bolivians are included in the group, which are less difficult than German Rams to keep. The range as a result was larger due to including all ram species. I do agree with you that the Ram Cichlid is best for advanced or expert aquarists do to the due temperature requirement and sensitivity. There will be a separate video on shell dwelling cichlids in the feature. I felt they are a separate post and video since many magazine have separate content for them. We also limit our videos to only 10-13 minutes in length as audience retention drops off a bunch after that. We usually have to cut a lot, but keep our blog post more detailed than the video, which is why we tell people in our video to visit our website for more info. Thank you again for your detailed insights. I'll be making a few changes to the blog post after your feedback. Unfortunately, I'm unable to edit a released video once it's on RU-vid, but comments like yours and active discussions will help clarify any faults or points missed in the video.

Having been a scientific proof reader for some years, I tend to pick up on terms that are used erroneously. Habit! I did not infer that the video should have covered all the shell dwellers, merely that this group would have met your criteria better than N. caudopunctatus. Good to know that you have a separate video planned on these little guys, and having kept a number of species (as well as having collected them in the lake) I look forward to seeing it. I appreciate the time constraints and the editing process only too well. I was for some years the Technical Editor of the British Cichlid Association and spent many hours editing and restructuring people's submissions. So, good luck with your efforts.
