Eumenes was the most tragic of all Alexander’s companions, he might be a secretary but he was able to beat a lot of Alexander’s generals only to be betrayed by the Silver shields.
Well, I don't have much to say... great video. I hope you stay motivated despite the limited views! Your Diadochi Series on the K&G channel brought me into this whole Hellenistic period and I knew already knew most of it, but it definitely didn't hurt. I'll be waiting with you for the day that one random video of yours goes viral, you surely deserve it!
Thank you and don't worry I will. This is all great practise for me to improve my presenting and make myself an expert in the Hellenistic field. Big plans ahead! 'Persistence and assiduity overcome all odds' - Sertorius
Thank you for making this video! It is such a fascinating and under appreciated topic in history, however tragic it might be. I was highly impressed by Eumenes of Cardia when i first read about him. Nice work!
Lysimachus was probably the best runner for an emperor. He proved he could live that long under Phillip and sent to the north to be out of the way while at the same time being one of the most capable and entrusted positions in the north. I find it funny the name Cleopatra had such a roll in Alexander's life.
If they could've just gotten along. "To the strongest." doesn't have to be a divisional term. We were Macedonians, when Alexander merged the Persian youth amongst his own men to supplement the ranks. I think the men saw that as more of a slap to the face than it was ever intended to be.
@@innosanto Yes, but is there any deniing that he has a lot of blood on his hands that should not be there in the first place ? Nobody is only a jerk but Alex definitly qualifies as at least being a jerk amongst his other traits.

Only just discovered your channel. But it looks like this channel was abandoned a year or so ago. Youre a great storyteller, very engaging. You are obviously very knowledgeable about ancient warfare. Seems a shame to end it when it's clearly something you are very passionate about. Hope you are well and that you will return to youtube one day.
Seleucus was not from this generation, nor was he a bodyguard. While still young, he become an infantry officer sometime before the Indian Campaign. Seleucus rose a bit after he was rewarded with Babylonia for mutineeing against and killing Perdiccas. But it was an empty reward. Someone else already had control of Babylonia. And the Satrapy of Babylonia didn't have (wasn't allowed to have) any military forces. I don't think Antigonus and Antipater thought this lowly infantry officer would get anywhere. But, after wandering around a bit, Seleucus somehow managed to take Babylonia...and then his amazing conquests started.
? Alexander conquered the Illyrians. Watch about the Balkan campaign. Alexander had the Balkan campaign before going to Persia. Of course they were not the big prizes, the advanced areas were other ones, other Greek states, Persia, Babylon, Assyria, phoenicians, Egypt, the Medes, the Lydians, etc. As for Epirus, his mother was Epirot princess. Epirus Royal family is his own family.
Quick note: Perdiccas came from the Macedonian region of Orestis not Lyncus - lessons learnt. More Hellenistic content planned in the near future! In the meantime you can check out the articles on my website for more ancient history: turningpointsoftheancientworld.com
You simply got it wrong, since Craterus was never a bodyguard. He was part of the older generation, that already served under the Phillip. Like Antigonos or Parmenyon.
Interesting presentation however there is a problem with the pronouncing of the name Lysimachus. Which was an Illyrian name meaning the great Oak or Lisimadh or lisimath.
To me, reading about these men and their fate after the death of Alexander goes to show that greed and lust for power destroy everything in the end. Think about it; they had the greatest empire the world had seen up to that point in the palm of their hands. The possibilities of what they might have achieved together were endless but in the end, every man was for himself. Such is the story of the human race, by and large I'm afraid.
So where is Alexander's body. I had heard that his armor was taken from Alexandria by one of the Roman emperors. Perhaps Nero or Caligula. I wonder where the armor is also. It must have been stashed somewhere in Rome.
Caligula stole Alexander's breastplate from his corpse, but did not take the body. It remained in Alexandria until c.391 when all records of it disappear. Most likely it was either destroyed or converted into a Christian Church after the Emperor Theodosius outlawed Paganism in 390 AD
@@tr1stan007 Any thoughts on the theory that Alex's body might have come to be identified as St. Mark in Christian Alexandria, and that it's now interred in the tomb of St. Mark in Venice?
it is in Macedonia he is in tomb in alsar where is mineral lorándite directly from the core of the sun used on the shilds on Macedonians to blind the enemes
I’m currently reading Mandredi’s Alexander Trilogy so - SPOILER ALERT 🤷🏻♂️ Just kidding. Great presentation and wonderfully explained. Looking forward to going through all your videos.

I would have liked to speak with him in the 3 day periods which he could've been said to have sulked or strategized or to even be honest at that level of decision making take a 3 day vacation. I wonder had he not died that night what the world would've came to be. To be fair we all need to learn our ways with Alcohol, I wonder if he sat aching and wonder more than Hepheastian's death and to the comment he made to Phillip when he fell between couches. I think back on what it was with wonder, but also a sense of sadness for the lost opportunity he had. Furthermore what he left in his stead was opportunity for the men who once fought at each other's side. Then it was taken back, hearing the names of the succeeding kingdoms makes my soul feel like it lost. Knowing these mens fates enlightened me. Ptolemy played his cards well and it's a shame to have seen the Library burn down as the Temple of Artemis had.
One or several of his body guards was responsible forr poisoning...His body guards thought that alezandra had established or conquered enough after conquering persia....Alezandra was the beginning of the hellenist era...he body guards a bowl of wine then he dies....

And the world waits still with bated breath, why the west has fascination of such for this character. Greater men have come and gone. Not even named at all.
Eumenes, was just tremendous. Perdiccas could’ve had it good but he seemed not to be too good at the Macedonian politics , killing an Argead royal woman, the backslap to Antipater’s marriage offer lol.
haha just hear the names and if you find a slavic name tell me.All this names have a meaning in Greek but not in the slavic language.Find your own history dont steal from others.
Ehm, Alexander had also Greek allies in the battle. And he consider himself -as his father did before- as the leader of Greeks. So put aside your nationalistic pseudo-history and try to learn something.
Macedonians are and was north Greeks the your people speak Bulgarian language and you are Slavic people the most of you , And about 30 percent Albanian And meaby some thousands Greeks From the civil war
Typically Thracian. No unity, no spirit of loyalty, just following the own interest. Alexander was betrayed and poisoned by one of his kin, Cassander, and then his beloved companions destroyed his empire by dividing it for each of them, everyone becoming kings, instead of defending Alexander's son and securing his future throne in order to maintain the work of Alexander. This is how great friends they were. This selfish character that was typical of the Thracian peoples, because in the end the Macedonians were just a branch of the greater Thracian family that included the whole balkans and also many regions in Anatolia, Middle East, North-Eastern Europe, and that is still thriving nowadays through the balkan countries. Everyone wants to be the greatest, everyone wants to be in the centre of the universe, everyone wants to rule the others no matter how uncapable they are, but no one wants to take any responsabilities and everyone is envious of the others. This comes from the Thracians.
Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community ... but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It's the invasion of the idiots Umberto Eco
@@Phaedon53 You don't believe in freedom of speech? I personally want everyone to be able to speak. This way it's easier to know who are the true idiots.
@@Wallyworld30 That is exactly what Umberto Eco says. That social media are actually exposing the idiots of this world everyday. And they are so many , being described as an "invasion".
... I'm no expert but this level of detail feels useless. Like I had significantly better understanding after a cursory look at wikipedia than after this 15 minute video. If feels like you don't care and are doing a book report for a paycheck. PS. Just try being better. I think you owe it to your audience if not yourself.
I don't get your criticism.. This video is clearly not meant to give overview over the entire Diadochi conflicts but rather focuses on Alexander's bodyguards - as stated in the title. So you shouldn't expect an overview from it. There are good videos giving broader context, for example on the kings & generals channel.
They were Greek, Modern Macedonia shouldn't be called Macedonia because these aren't Greek and are stealing the name whom knows why. Macedonian were Greek just like the Epirots.
