When I first started listening to The Beatles, I was immediately enthralled by John's voice. Maybe Paul's voice is stronger vocally, but John's voice awakens something inside, something deeper. And I am overwhelmed with incredible feelings when I hear it.
Crazy thing is John never liked his own vocals. He was always to tinkering with effects to mess with vocals and sometimes they turned to gold like A Day in Life' etc
Paul is more skilled in terms of vocal technique. This is also true for all the instruments he and John could play. But John had a very distinct and certain style - both in the way he sang, and in the way he played the guitar. I'd even say the fact that he technically played and sang less polished than Paul made the emotions come across more direct, more from the heart.
Lennon is an authentic aggressive rock singer. When he sings “you can talk to me” on hey bulldog it’s just shivering! He has many amazing examples of smoothness as well (the beginning of happiness is a warm gun is just beautiful).
John is one of the great classic rock and roll vocalists. McCartney is also one of the great singers. The fact that they were both also brilliant songwriters and innovative musicians and found each other to form a band is nothing short of miraculous.
The Beatles is one of those bands (or most likely the BEST one) where every single member is a pure genius and masters of their crafts. Its just amazing how every Beatle composed at least 1 hit for the band and the 4 of them could be a band individually.
I am the Walrus is one my fav John vocals. It sounds heavy on the filter, but it's perfection and so typical of Lennon's range. The line "I'm crying...." is a take on Smokey Robinson and John makes it his own. Happiness is a Warm Gun, Please Please Me, God, Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out, The entire Rock and Roll album....all feature great vocals by John.
Happiness is a Warm Gun, I think is one of John's best vocal performances I definitely prefer his style, and the sound of his voice to Paul. Though I will admit Paul is more versatile.
Don’t know if Paul is more versatile. Paul couldn’t do Falsetto like John could. The end of “Happiness is a Warm Gun”, only John could do it like that from screams and rasp to that magic falsetto
I could tell Beatles songs had different, distinct vocalists when I was a kid, but I didn't know who sang what. Later on, as I learned to identify the vocalists, it turned out that my most favorite songs were sung by John. They were all very good singers, but there was something about his voice and his songwriting that connected with me more than the others.
Paul had more vocal range sure. He was maybe a better vocalist (technically) But Lennon's voice is more interesting and unique than Macca's. Lennon's raspy, grungy voice was so far out. It reminds me a little of Cobain's voice. Excellent for rock. You hear Lennon's voice for two seconds in a song and you recognize it right away. My favorite Beatle songs were always Lennon's too.
Well said. I agree with you. I would just like to add that there’s nothing like John’s intimate soft voice as well in songs like Julia, I’m so Tired or Cry baby cry.
@@troubledsole9104 I don’t think so.. Paul has a wide vocal range and that’s why he has a variety of singing voices that he uses in his songs…but there are many tracks in Beatles Discography that Paul sang that can be imitated or atleast to a certain extent…like Hey Jude, Let It Be, Yesterday, And I Love Her etc.. There is absolutely no one that imitate John’s voice…imo The verses by John in “A Day in the Life” is purely angelic bliss…no one can imitate or replicate that distinctive voice..
I’ll go with “Happiness is a Warm Gun”. Amazing Falsetto also on “Mother” & “God” along with the screams and rasp. Incredible diversity of sounds from one voice
It's buried in the mix, so it's easy not to notice, but John does something incredible at the end of Don't Let Me Down. During the outro, he sings "Don't let me down" starting from a scream on G#5 that drops down an octave to G4. It's such a powerful vocal I've never understood why it's mixed so far back, but it can be heard in isolated vocal tracks.
Actually, just a few seconds after that, he yelps a demonic-sounding *A6* (I think?!) on one of the overdubbed vocal tracks. He does it three times before the song ends, low in the mix but clear here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dax1IyemrEc.html (starting 3:05). It's in the range of Roger Waters's inhale scream, but I'm not sure how John does it here, it doesn't really sound inhaled or falsetto. Whistle register I'd guess? I'm glad I wasn't Paul overdubbing right next to him because Jesus, that must have been fucking loud.
you can't prefer one or the other one of The Beatles voices. Imagine all four sounding like Paul, awful. It was the blend of such different great voices what gave them their unique sound.
To me Paul's voice is often more beautiful and melodious, but John's had more angst suited perfectly for a rocker. Rock has been blessed with some great singers like Chris Cornell, Robin Zander, Kurt Cobain, and Paul, but non could quite do what John could. It was a very rare gift.
Long tall sally, helter skelter, oh darling, maybe I’m amazed, monkberry moon delight, call me back again and many other fantastic examples of Paul’s phenomenal rock voice
Absolutely. There are other technically or melodiously talented singers than John. But he had a rare gift of touching something inside you which is a very rare gift. Also his songs made you think. He his songs gave a grit to the Beatles. Paul is a great singer but John had that extra something that I cannot explain... but made you think and feel.
I love both John and Paul's voices. Listen to John on This Boy. He does a fantastic job on that song. John was insecure about his vocals according to George Martin. John had no idea how good a singer he really was.
John Lennon was an awesome singer. He could Rock with the best of them. He could also sing a ballad with the best of them. So thank you for posting this video and keeping the flame alive and burning.
i want you is easily my personal favorite and most impressive display of his vocals ever it sounds so beautiful, you chose such incredible examples of his most incredible singings
John has the perfect amount of rasp in his voice. My favorite performance is him singing Yer Blues with The Dirty Mac at The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus.
Great analysis on Lennon's incredible expressive vocals! Of course there's so many songs but how could you miss "Money (That's What I Want)"? Especially when he sings the line 'Money don't get everything it's true, what it don't get I can use'. When he goes up register and hits on "I" and then down register on "can use" is but one example of why he's the greatest rock vocalist of all time, even against Paul.
There's lots of other outstanding examples of Lennon's great rock and roll voice. One is in the middle of 'Rock and Roll Music' where he throws in an intentional rasp that's just perfect. Another is 'Money'; practically the whole vocal part is just an amazing shredder. There are plenty more.
His voice is ultimate source of pleasure......I genuinely prefer John Lennon strong as coffee pleasurable as chocolate his voice makes us feels blissful happy even today you can't simply deny Lennon....in this case you can't ignore the power of his voice...his voice is powerful ever.....those vocal is simply on your senses....baritone livewire
I remember being a youngster during the sixties and taking note that whenever the vocal was handed back to John I'd think, Oh yeah, this is the good stuff. He connects emotionally when he sings.
Paul is generally considered to be the ballad writer of the Beatles, while John is the rocker. But Lennon wrote some of their best harmonies, like This Boy, Sun King, or Because (nine-part harmonies!). But like others have said, they were better together.
John was just as much a beautiful ballad singer as Paul was a balls out rocker. They both could crush at both extremes. The Beatles had more raw firepower than any other band in history.
I believe that vocal experts have generally agreed that McCartney has the greater range and variety in his vocal talent, but Lennon is actually the better singer when it comes to tone and quality. What makes the Beatles, among so many other things, so wonderful is how these two incredibly talented singers can harmonize, along with Harrison, to sound even better together.
I'm "John" in The Beatles tribute band and all the skills in the video are also my standard. Of course, if you want to sing his songs, you have to be very good and work hard. As a rock singer (and also an excellent rhythm and solo guitarist), John is still really underappreciated. He was a genius, as was his more mentioned (and still active) colleague Paul.
@Bloom Tik Bloom Once you try to sing and play his rhythm guitar at the same time, maybe you will appreciate his guitar style. Also his solos are awesome IMHO.
Lennon has a unique voice kinda like Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley etc.. He probably didn’t have the vocal prowess that Paul had yet Music wasn’t/isn’t and never will be about prowess.. Its subjective, Let’s just say My Brain appreciates Paul’s Voice.. But My Heart loves John’s Voice..
Thank you-I’d say John’s voice was probably my favorite. Abbey Road and his Double Fantasy album with Yoko Ono both count as dessert island albums/CDs. Love every member of the Fab Four’s voices and sing along still.
It’s ironic that John didn’t really like his singing voice, yet he’s one of the greatest in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. So distinctive and full of emotion. He definitely had the range, as did Paul (the man of 1000 voices)!
Always preferred McCartney's vocals, but John definitely nailed it on these tracks and many more. He was a great vocalist, yet ironically didn't like his own voice. The beginning of Mr. Moonlight always impressed me.
According to Rolling Stone magazine John is among the 6 best singers and Paul is in 11th place. Paul has a cleaner voice but John performs better. John's voice reaches to the bone.
Rolling Stone magazine is quite a weak source to mention regarding John-Paul biases. However, John's maybe a better singer anyway. I'm just saying that that magazines is not a reliable source in these things.
I've always preferred John's singing over Paul. There's just so much texture to his voice, and he could convey so much passion. For me he had the perfect rock and roll voice. He could belt out the rockers, whether it's Twist and Shout (and he had a cold at the time, hence why his voice was shot) or Yer Blues, but he could sing ballads too, and everything in between. I couldn't imagine Paul singing Happiness Is a Warm Gun with nearly as much conviction. Paul's great, but I think John is a far more dynamic singer.

Thank you very much for this video. John Lennon is one of the greatest singers of all time in popular music. As with his compositions, his voice seems to come from an unknown place. Paul is fantastic and has a great ability to master different styles, both in his melodies and in his voice. He can write and sing blues, folk, rock, music hall, etc., but we always know where it all comes from. But John's songs and voice are unique and have a peculiarity, a strangeness, as if they did not were taken from other styles, but as if they were created from nothing, as something that had not existed before and that will not exist again later.
Good job with bringing attention to What you got! Some of his other great and slept on vocal performances include Yer blues, Everybody's got something to hide,I m so tired...from white album Well well well, mother..from plastic ono album cold turkey etc
an odd choice but for me his backing in hey jude when he sings “then you can start” the way he says start is so amazing I don’t even know how he does it
John’s voice soothes and often makes me gasp for breath, but I also love Paul’s voice. What impresses me are the comments here. Most are very respectful to one’s preference. Not so much on other channels. Must be the respect the channel’s creator produces.
That was very interesting! (A little bit over my head, but very interesting to listen!) Yes, I love John's voice, as much as I love Paul's voice and they're different which I believe made the blend so perfect!
There have always been Paul fans and Lennon fans. I have always preferred Paul's voice. However the older I get the more I like John Lennon and what he stands for.
Agree with alot of these comments. John is the greatest, he is a top nothch front man and one of the best lead singers ever. The most compelling Beatles songs are John on lead with Paul and George on harmony.
3:13 that's because the Beatles recorder the entire Please Please Me album in one day. Twist & Shout was the last song they recorded. Great video, again.
That was a fun review of Lennons vocals. I agree with many here that Lennon has a personality vocal where McCartney is very versatile in style & ability. Love them both! 🎵💜 Mike is a huge Lennon fan & I lean toward McCartney (Dawn)
Very interesting video. I hadn’t thought of « Baby, You’re a Rich Man » as a vocal performance that way. The songs that came to mind for me were « This Boy » , especially the bridge, « Rock and Roll Music », « Don’t Let Me Down » and « A Day in the Life ». Even a song like « I Should Have Known Better » when he sings : « And when I ask you to be miiiine » shows his range and control. I love John’s voice. I also love Paul’s voice. I don’t like picking a favorite.🎤❤️
I feel musical today. In the 80's there was only one tribute band in this area. It was a Beatles tribute band 1964 and they were awesome. Today there are literally hundreds of them to choose from. Its nice to see younger people appreciating and duplicating the music of the past. What we need is another super group to come forth with new material that will blow people's minds like the Beatles did.
Right on putting mr. Moonlight on there. I don’t know why it seems a lot of Beatles fans don’t like that track. The beginning part you mentioned and the “I pray and pray more each day” I always loved.
Hemano, recien viendo tu IG me doy cuenta que sos argentino!! Que grande!! Llevo viendo tus videos hace varias semanas y nunca hubiera dicho que eras argento!! Jjajaja seguí así, amo tu contenido! Saludos desde Córdoba!
I WAS hoping for a youtube channel that explains the details of these wonder singers, I always thought rock singers need more attention, I like to sing , I definitely not a profesional singer but as a guitar player I liked to sing and play at the same time because one of my biggest inspirations were these too genious, Paul and Jhon . I know what you mean with every explanation of yours, is crazy , I analized on my own terms the style and tecniques, and I loved to imitate them and now that my voice is not the same time I still apreciate those rasps and runs, You should do one about Stevem Tyler and Kurt Cobain , love this channel man , one suscriber, good Job and keep up these videos that have awesome information
I think you missed some very impressive vocal performances by John. If I Fell: His transitioning between low and high harmony throughout the song is crazy (and he does it with ease). This Boy: His vocal solo is epic No Reply: He (and Paul) are virtually screaming the chorus and remain in perfect pitch Not A Second Time: Great song...great singing Trying to decide the better singer between John and Paul is a pointless discussion, they were both great! It always amazes me how two young kids from Liverpool could meet each other and grow to become the most successful song writers and singers of all time.
I have to say I like both John and paul's voice in the song I've got a feeling where paul rips his voice and John come's in with a mellow voice they just complented the song and one of my favorite beatles tune.
