I think that saying is why there is such a stigma on riders, especially sportbike riders. When a rider "rides like everyone's out to kill them", I don't know about you but when I do I feel a noticeable change. When I focus on watching everything and being prepared for absolutely anything, I notice I shift back in my seat for more aggressive lean, stay on the balls of my feet, use more of my legs to grip the tank and kind of naturally tuck more. I think a lot of riders do this, which gives off a look of aggression or anger, which is either sexy and bad ass or offputting and unsettling, both of which are prevalent stigmas for bikers

I just try not to ride when the roads are busy, I always thought the cars are going to kill me. At some point a car will take you out, If you go fast a slow car will block your path, If you go slow a fast car will take you out. I go steady through junctions now, Doesn't matter who is in the wrong when you leg gets torn off.

Good input, but incomplete. As far as I can tell, this is more complete: 1) Assume everyone is trying to kill you or they really don't care if they do. 2) You are invisible. Headlights, running lights, blaze orange jacket. Doesn't matter. They 'didn't see you'... 3) Never assume you're aware of every possible 'stupid'. There's a new 'stupid' being invented 3 times a day. Every day. 4) As you approach an intersection, if you don't make eye contact, they DID NOT SEE YOU. I got T-boned by a little old lady last fall. She came up to the intersection, stopped and waited. She had no real reason to wait except to let me go by before pulling out onto the main road. I saw her from 1/8th mile away. Never made eye contact. Just as I got right up to the car, she pulled out. All the way to the center line. Like she was meaning to off me the whole time. Incredible. I had convinced myself she was waiting for me. She wasn't. Probably just hung up her phone and pulled out. Totaled my bike, collapsed one of my lungs and cost me two weeks pay. Her statement? "I didn't see you!" My answer: "You don't see if you don't look!" Unintentional, no doubt. But there ya go: She didn't see me. She was trying to kill me and she showed me a whole new brand of 'stupid'. But hey, mistakes happen... All you can do is heal up, learn and get another bike.

Most common for me: False second gear. When you start rolling in first gear, shift up, the gearbox doesn't go past neutral, rev the engine and nothing happens, except the cars around you thinking you are a moron for blasting a full rev for no reason...

Close the throttle completely and pull in your clutch completely. Then shift with some force. It would go smooth if you are shifting in the rpm your bike likes to. After a while you would be able to know whether you are in neutral or 2nd by feeling those gears move.

Dude go for it. Its so liberating. I started watching Yammie 3 years ago when I was 14, I'm 17 now. I got my first bike last year, an 01 ninja 250 with classy integrated lights and a removed baffle. The feeling is unreal. Riding my bike, MY VERY OWN BIKE, was unlike anything I've ever felt before or since. Its so liberating, freeing, a fat middle finger to all the relatives including my parents who said no. It was even sweeter because of their distaste, they refused to help me so I worked my ass off working nearly 60 hours a week when I wasn't in school to save up for that beauty. When you finally get your first bike, relish it, cherish it, don't let anyone tell you you're wrong. If you feel it's right, and is it oh so right, it will be one of the best feelings you'll ever have.

@@amihere383 damn, i feel that. I'm in that exact same boat right now. Fifteen, and my family shut down the idea. Saying Its too dangerous, and i would be too tempted to speed and pull wheelies. I think if i was a guy, they would be more open to the idea. But once I get a job I'm gonna start saving up for one, lol. Thanks for the inspiration.

@@amihere383 I guess I am one of the lucky ones cause at least my dad is like DEEP into riding like he has been riding since I was born and he still rides to this day. Also i am doubly lucky cause he is also one of the gear matters type. He is now a bit on the older side but still rides a Ducati Palingalia likes is nobodys business for 100 kilometers+ for fun with friends. But my mom trys to hold me back but aint nobody holding me. I feel it in the blood(I get my licence in under a year 16 atm)

Another reason to not tailgate - You can't see the road surface far enough ahead to look for hazards. Things that cars can easily drive over can take a motorcycle down.

I've got a couple. Don't assume the road around that corner hasn't got gravel or dirt or rubbish on it. Don't go on group rides where everyone huddles together or think they are racing each other.

Hey, I just needed to say I’ve been thinking about a bike for a few weeks and watching quite a few of your videos. I haven’t ridden a bike for fourty years and had many questions about my skills/abilities. I used to race and was a mechanic in a couple of workshops so with much trepidation I test rode a Ducati 748 this morning and by the second block my focus was razor sharp again. This is mad! My body remembered how to do this shit! I’m well aware of the dangers regardless of the bike especially so many years out of the saddle, but it was such a revelation to ride again. This I need to do; it makes me feel so alive. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet though I’m much closer. Thanks for all your advice - as silly as you are, it helps a lot.

Just pulled the trigger on an 02 Daytona 955i. Last bike was a used Norton Dominator decades ago. Retired about ten years ago, our son full grown & my wife understands why a bike is keeping me young. Should have done it sooner but I ll take whatever miles I have left.

Hi I've been riding nearly 40 years but it never hurts to listen to yammies reminders. I agree with everything here apart from the "stay one or two bike lengths back". It depends on your speed and you need to stay back a time gap not a distance gap. Only a fool breaks the two second rule ( for dry roads). Yes, I am a driving instructor. Keep up the good work yam.

I’m old, very short, light and disabled. I don’t really have the option to look cool riding a motorcycle and also be a beginner. All the emphasis on being cool, I find it hilarious and irrelevant. I may never heal from an injury so acquiring one for looking cool doesn’t make sense to me. Waddling is so bad why? I mean I could only do that with a handful of bikes anyway with my size and shape but I can’t fathom caring what anyone thinks re how anything looks. Really? Ill do whatever it takes for me to manage this mad adventure I got myself into safely and minimizing risk to myself and others and shame on anyone who judges me for being ugly or funny looking. There’s a solution for that. Don’t look at me! ;)) And just like that... waddling becomes cool. Own it if you have to do it. What else you gonna do, risk injury?

So when I first learned to drive standard, it took several hours over a couple weekends and all of my Papa’s patience before I had it down enough to drive stick by myself. Sometime after that, I went out with a buddy to ride some dirt bikes for the first time. Shifting on bikes after learning stick felt super easy.

Getting going from a dead stop is the hardest part of driving a stick. After that it’s easy to shift because you don’t have to worry about it dying.

Driving manual for 15 years before getting my first bike definitely helped when i got a real bike.. haven’t even stalled it once and I had the shifts nice and smooth after a couple days. Id also owned scooters and mopeds that whole time so my learning curve was minimal. Biggest thing to get used to was the foot brake but it wasn’t a big deal.

My fiancee is currently preparing me for the safety course and I still get nervous taking off even at low speeds. My balance while sitting is fine but standing is my biggest problem since the strength in my left leg isn't like my dominant leg, which I'll work on soon. I've been a sheltered child because my parents literally burned into my brain that riding is dangerous (which I believe it and understand) but it's a hobby and vehicle I can actually control without feeling overwhelmed. I do admit, I've dropped my baby twice while practicing but I'm still learning how to brake correctly. So far I'm just easing off the clutch w/o throttle so I know how it feels to get moving (i seem to brake better that way, so I just need to add the throttle into the equation). I'm doing very well so far as a baby newbie though :) hopefully I'll be riding off without too much nervousness in the near future.

Car length or two? It's all relative to the speed you're doing. I follow the 2 second rule.

I brake all the time going through turns, most of the time is trail braking but you can still apply brake mid turn. The issue is with beginners grabbing the brakes and overloading the shocks and tires resistance. It’s all about how much and how quickly you apply the brakes, same thing with accelerating in a turn. I do that all the time but again it’s about feeling the bike, 0-20% instant throttle isn’t smart but a smooth slow progression is fine. Basically don’t stick to a rule, feel your bike out and understand how it works. People can do crazy things with bikes but it’s because they have full control over their bike and know what it can do. Be safe but test the limits of your bike, you’ll be surprised with what it can do.

First thing I do when I get a new bike is: full brake stop practice. Got a new bike yesterday and guess what.. Practicing full stops to get familiar with this bike to know the limits. Looking and fixation on the farthest point with your head up, is the most important thing when making full brake stops...seriously, if you look down.. You will go down. Head up in cornering, head up riding super slow.. You ride where you look.

2:24 You dont even need a parking lot for this. A short driveway will suffice. Contrary to popular belief unless your engine runs like shite, you do not need to apply throttle to take off with a clutch. Just ever so slowly release the clutch and when you find that friction point the bike or car will begin to move. If you practice this technique with just the clutch no throttle input, you'll have a much more in depth understanding of that friction point. Eventually you'll be able to take off without having to gas at all. This is especially useful in cars, Many people fear a hill in a stick shift, once you learn this technique you can use the clutch to stand on the hill and not the brakes, Without the car stalling and bucking.

My bike gear indicator sometimes will say that I'm on neutral when I'm actually on first (the manual actually says it can happen), causing me to stall when I let go of my clutch, so these days I always let go of my clutch slowly after I stop.

Long story short new riders, take a motorcycle safety course. Not only does your insurance give you a discount when you pass but every one of these points and more are brought up and hammered home. Very educational and teaches you how to train the skills and techniques you need from the get go

I don’t count by car lengths for distance, I keep traffic lengths at 3-4 seconds, you have one second for acknowledgement, and the rest to react appropriately. And is applicable at any speed, whether highway, or city.

Could you talk more about downshifting because when I am coming up to a light and it's already red I downshift into 4th gear and then just sometimes I'll downshift in the third and then hold the clutch in and just go all the way down to first and then put it in neutral and then roll up to the light into a stop and then of course take off from first and then second depending on how many RPMs I give it is how fast I shift

I learned to drive a car on a stick. But that was decades ago and have been driving automatic. I must say, my instincts are better on a stick. Automatic had dumbed down my senses a lot. I am a motorcycle newbie, like very new, and I am back learning the friction zone all over again. Sucks. But I will get there.

here in belgium we were taught that the distance between you and the other car should be your speed devided by 2. 120km/h = 60m or 50km/h = 25m between you and the other car

My favorite thing about riding is that it feels so raw, almost as if illegal, like a go kart on the street. This coming from a guy who dailys a 225k mile manual car with no powersteering. And theres almost no electronics... (reason I like my car). 60 miles on my 2023 z400 ans im loving it.

A car length or two? I count timed distance in time to the tune of 2-3 seconds. As the vehicle in front of you passes a dashed line, street sign... anything, start counting. You should hit 2 Mississippi at minimum before you get to that same dashed line, banana peel, phone pole, etc.

Braking mid-corner is only dangerous if you suddenly slam on the brakes while you're riding like you have explosive diarrhoea and have to get home ASAP. In my experience, gentle and smooth braking inputs rarely upset your bike that much, mid-corner or not.

Regarding The second point about tailgating, here in UK there is something called 2 second rule. Essencially if you can say "only a fool breaks the 2 second rule" in your head. And by the time you've finished, you're past the point where the vehicle in front of you was when you started saying it - You're too close to it.

Yammie this thing about not braking in corners, I know I was told not to when I was learning, but I’ve done it a number of times since passing my test, maybe I’ve been lucky, but I’ve never hit the deck, maybe I shouldn’t have said that, cos it’ll probably happen now lol

You can trail brake and be fine, I do it all the time when I KNOW i’m going to come in fast no problem. But its more along the lines of having to unexpectedly brake in a corner, which usually leads to disaster. I’ve never came close to eating shit when I came into a corner slow and accelerated through it like they teach you. but when I come into a corner unexpectedly hot is when I shit my pants. Which will never happen if you just follow the msf rule of accelerating THROUGH not braking through a corner lol.

The biggest thing that helped me with clutch that no one ever mentions except the riding course is the friction zone and telling you to ride the clutch to lesrn, and that since the clutch is in oil you can use it more compared to a car without burning it out as quick.

Yeah, a car's length ain't gonna cut it. Doing 30 means you travel 45 feet per second. That's a big car. Now try 80... 2 seconds, at any given speed, is a better rule of thumb. 1 second to register, 1 second to react.

I feel like a lot of advice on navigating turns assumes you desire maximum velocity on a pristine track. You should be able to adjust your line at *any* point in the turn. We are not on a track. We are on public roads. There will be potholes. There will be roadkill. There will be a random plastic bag carefully hiding a cinder block. You should navigate the turn at a reasonable speed and be able to swerve at any point in the turn.

Also when cornering avoid the centre line like dont get close to it. Cus if u make a corner and on the other side a truck is also making a corner u will hit him trucks tend to stay near the middle line. Just what i learned at my motorcycle course

A think that helped me in everyday riding and in emergency braking is for shure having fun riding sideaways as in wet road and emergency braking locking the rear wheel is more than likely if you get on the brakes with too much force. And that got me used to maintaining the bikes control while slipping

Mid corner breaking. I know it’s wrong. I am conscious of it every time I go into a turn. And then, I do it. I catch myself and of course, curse out loud. I don’t do it every time but usually when I am zoning. The worst time to do it I know. Been riding for 32 years but I still do it occasionally.

Have never driven a motorcycle, but have about 20 years experience with manual transmission cars. I feel it would be VERY confusing to have the clutch on a handle rather than a pedal. I can fully understand how you'd stall with that weirdness.

You should be downshifting as you slow down to the stop. Get familiar with the RPM band and speed for your different gears, and work with them. You never know when you may have to re-accelerate as you are coming up to a stop, especially with all the cell phone zombies driving out there. I've seen way too many new riders riding the clutch and downshifting after they've come to a stop. You should always be ready to speed up as well as slow down, to do whatever the situation calls for. After a while it becomes second nature, especially if you develop the habit early. When the time comes, you aren't going to have time to figure out what gear you are in, sometimes not even enough time to shift at all. I wouldn't even be here to write this if I hadn't developed that feel for my bike. On a rainy day, as I was slowing to turn off the main highway to get home, I recognized the skip-skip-skip sound behind me as a car hydroplaning in a panic stop as the driver behind me realized too late what my brake light meant. If I hadn't been in proper gear, I couldn't have gunned it and pulled into a parking lot further down, and she would have plowed right over me. By the time she stopped, she was 30 feet ahead of me. I hope she learned her lesson, as she spent a couple minutes sitting in her car crying and puking, but I doubt it. I would have been dead anyway, there's no way to get that back. If I had been in the wrong gear, I would have stalled rather than re-accelerate enough to get out of the way. Oh and yeah, she had a F***ing cell phone in her hand.

I am older but I am going to start riding soon, and the yam has given me a lot of tips. Keep up the great content. I am going to actually but am FZ07 as a starter. I am tall and it sits just right when I got on one at the dealership. Thanks for all info bro. Maybe I’ll see you around the DFW.

So last year, got my bike license, took the Course, bought a mint 600 gsxr. Then about a month later a old lady stopped dead in front of me in my road car. Yup cost of insurance for a new rider went from 2000 a year to 3900 a year. My car went from 1400 a year to 6500. Looking at my bike right now!
