The way you describe gesture drawing is so precise, it is exactly why I’ve started to fall in love with gesture drawing. I am very impatient when it comes to drawing, and practicing gestures has been a way for me to let loose, ignore the details that are the things that make me impatient, and it has improved my art, it’s make it more lively. Subscribed! Thank you so much for this video!

I love this video. I've watched dozens of videos on this subject and most merely show pre-drawn examples of gesture drawing. You actually drew in real time and not in fast forward speed so the viewer really gets to see the drawing take shape. It was very helpful. Please keep teaching and sharing your knowledge and talent with us.

Im not saying this video is going to automatically gonna to transform my art skills but after watching many videos on youtube this video finally made it click what gesture is really about. When u see other ppl explain gesture and make these almost perfect art work u may think that if yours doesnt look presentable its not good but after seeing him do it and really emphasis how it's not suppose to be clean, how it's suppose to quick, how you're suppose to be move swiftly it finally clicked. I'm having fun doing gestures!

I love animated movies , im fairly good at drawing, however i used to only draw "pretty" like 2d same emotions girls that did look like anime art but had 0feeling to it. So recently i let myself draw ugly and i have tons of fun drawing on a bus listening to music i learn bit by bit to draw emotion and male faces (which i sucked at totally) yet im not good with male body yet. And my skills are bit stale on poses , no wonder..hahahaha i only today learned that drawing poses is called "Gesture drawing" at least i know what im trying to learn. Also i would read and see about OC , and OC challenges however i didnt know how to learn character design ... all i could find is done results. Now i know theres whole science behind drawing that stuff xDDD im so glad i know what i need to know , just drawing from the head (poses , expressions) is difficult. Even though i have limitless resources of inspirtion.

the first 50 seconds alone is really helpful itself. My painting professor used to somewhat hate me for not painting faster, which would end with one small section of the picture would be well rendered but the rest was just a mess. It took a while for it to stick but one thing he always tried to drill in my head was to "trust my skill and work faster". That's a VERY important mindset to have when it comes to illustration and even animation.

Really good course!! I am learning to draw and when you said no eraser my breathing stopped. What you just taught the 7 L's, should I start doing this now as I am learning or later on when I've progressed a little more? I'll try it later on. Loose, lightly, action, lively, rhythm, long, and large. I'll have to go through the vid again just to get the flow. Thank you!!
@michaeloffner8515
@michaeloffner8515 8 лет назад
I'd do the gesture drawing now actually. Forcing yourself to be loose and flow will help the rest of your art for two reasons: 1. You'll learn to move on if a piece doesn't look so great because you aren't allowed to fret over details. You'll learn to see "failure" as just another part of getting better. 2. You'll become much, much more confident in your ability to draw, which will help. Drawing long lines in one go will help you do better in most other art projects, just because you need that confidence to make long lines smooth and flowy. Basically, gesture drawing is made to get you out of your comfort zone. The best thing anyone new to drawing can do is get out of their comfort zone, because outside of the comfort zone is the only place to learn.

This video helped me realize one of the fatal flaws I make when drawing for action poses. Back then I would draw so quick and just do the pose I want then and there, but my artistic eye/skill was all around garbage but I got what I wanted from the poses. Learning more, multiple people would say take your time and slow down feel it out more in depth. I've slowed down far to much to the point where the pages I'm working on feel stiff. Glad I came back to this vid. 9 minutes into it I popped out a 3 quick action pose with proper proportions and perspective, things that despite vehemently studying, practicing, and trying to incorporate in my art, would come out like trash. Seriously thanks for this vid.

What is the difference between lines of actions and lines of rhythm? It seems they both capture the dynamic sense of a pose, especially the most emphatic aspect of the figure.
@alphonsodunn
@alphonsodunn 5 лет назад
Lines of rhythm emphasizes a natural continuous flow perceived through connected forms, while lines of action do show a flow through forms but mostly emphasize the effect of a force and/or movement.

One thing that really stood out for me was drawing the leash as the point of action first. It makes sense as the leash is what is tugging the man. In the drawing sense its the leash not the dog. The leash could be hooked to a fire hydrant or a runaway train as long as it's taut it doesn't matter. What the leash is hooked to could even be off screen and it wouldn't matter the leash is the reason why the man is reacting. Thanks for that, it is now in my drawing tool box.

So cool. You could teach Proko a thing or two about presentation. Now with that gratuitous dig out of the way, i would like to suggest another "L"; "Live it", by which I mean FEEL the gesture in your own body. Feel the pinch and the stretch, the clench and release, what animators call "the squash and stretch". It helps you intuit when a gesture calls for a light, flowing line which suddenly ends in a dark abrupt corner, like the muscles along the fore-arm flowing along the length of the arm then SUDDENLY taking a tight corner around the wrist bone into the hand bent at a dramatic angle to the arm. Really like this video, the first I've watched by you, will look for more!

This is very helpful, thank you. Just a quick clarifier on how to distinguish lines of action vs lines of rhythm. My current understanding is: - Lines of action = A few lines accentuating isolated instances of action in specific parts of an object when that action is not shared across the whole object (ex: leash being tugged by a dog, tree branches bending in the wind). - Lines of rhythm = Multiple lines accentuating the shared motion or shape of an object, spread across its individual components (ex: a dancer's pose, the shape of a vase). Is that correct? Thanks for this great tutorial!
@alphonsodunn
@alphonsodunn 7 лет назад
I think you're definitely correct to large degree, but the meanings do actually overlap. A rhythm line can be one/singular as well.

It just isn't the same without everything being extra large. My first time learning gesture was with a huge pad of newsprint and a large chunk of charcoal using the largest motions to really burst out and gesture. using a small scale like a normal sketchbook just doesn't convey what you need in true gesture drawing. It was one of the best things to break my mindset out of thinking too much about details. I improved in leaps and bounds after I did gesture drawing. overthinking things is literally poison to artists so gesture drawing is the tonic. These are fantastic guidelines though so people should definitely use these just work even larger go as big as you can to really explore the gesturing of it. Gesture is a lot about getting your whole body into the drawing and the movement of the forms and shapes. It doesn't work as well if you work too small.
