In this video, I go over the clothing that I used on my recent backcountry Stone's sheep hunt. I also share a framework you can use to create a clothing layering system for any hunt. Credit goes to John Barklow as I adapted his original system to create this one. If you have any questions or comments leave them below.

Curious on your opinion on my top layering system I’m thinking- for August-end of November backpack mountain mule deer/elk. System 1: -Sitka 120 merino -core lightweight hoodie -cirque lite -Grumman -dewpoint System 2: -Sitka core lightweight long sleeve -Sitka heavyweight hoodie -cirque lite -Grumman -dew point

I’d go with system 2. Or early season system 1 and drop one of the base layers.

Hey Jay. Which puffy pants do you recommend? Because Sitka doesn't offer a puffy pants as of 2024 and other puffy pants are mostly in Down which I don't want. Thanks man

Hey jay, instead of the kelvin active jacket, can i take the ambient hooded 100 or Ambient 200 jacket. I think the ambient 200 would probably be too hot for active hunting right? But then again in alberta we do have -25C hunting weather. Thanks man.

I like wind stoppers, Mountain jacket is my most favorite gear, and wearing almost all time. My experience: I’m easy to get heat and sweat like pig. So I always wear less specially hiking. And this is how it feels: If I was still, I feel cold. When active I feel just right or bit warm, But whenever wind blows I get cold, bad parts that there are always wind or air blowing me on the mountain. If the wind or air blows over minutes I get cold and even shacking. Sitka gear breath well, I can put my active and Apex on but doesn’t really help the wind the wind go threw them and to skins. Then the mountain jacket or wind stopper comes shine, it solves the problem so well. I wear it almost all the time and it breath! I can use rain gear but first it’s bulky, most, it does not breath well, wearing it makes me pig again. I do sweat when wearing MJ but in a good way, it keeps the temperature balanced well from morning to late, temperature from -4 to 25 In my opinion it’s a game changer gear Getting jetstream this winter for colder days and spring hunt

Hey Jay, how did the kelvin aerolite perform for you this past season. I’d appreciate your feedback on that piece. Thanks again, and I appreciate your unbiased opinions!

I like it a lot. I’ve got it packed for my sheep hunt I leave on Friday for.

No longjohns for baselayer bottoms? Do those ever get added to the kit?
@MindfulHunter

Definitely as it gets colder. They will replace the boxers. And in some situations I'd bring both but it would be rare. I hate bringing extra clothes.

Good advice re thinking of your gear as a system and thinking of purchases in light of what role they fill and what they replace. But what if you just enjoy buying gear?!

Then buy away brother. Retail therapy is a real thing lol.

Awesome video, thanks for this Jay! I got the bug late, started 3 years ago, and slowly acquiring different layers. You confirm a lot of the things I’ve considered with mixing hunting and non-hunting layers together depending on the situation. I’d add that military surplus has some great finds for those on a budget - though there is a significant weight penalty. Cheers!

That's a great tip. I spent a long time in wool and fleece before moving to more technical fabrics and for day hunts where you don't have a heavy bag they're still great options.

Such a great video for newer On Set Hunters like myself. This is all new to me and to have it broken down in layman’s terms shortens the curve. Thanks Jay as always.

Love it. I wish the aerolite gear was quieter though.

That’s good to know. I’ll be using it for the first time at the end of the month on a rifle mule deer hunt. So it’s a little bit less important. But that would be critical for an archery hunt. I’ll definitely pay attention and see what I think.
