The 7 Show: EP 1 - Extending the Alesis Strike Pro SE triggers

Good to hear. Thanks. I've been very happy with my Strike Pro SE. The hi-hat took a little tinkering to get it dialed in, but after that, I have no issues. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I'm really pleased with mine. The module is actually pretty easy to navigate as well. With a little poking around, I was able to figure it out without much of a problem. The only thing I could complain about is moving to the field you want to change. It could have been more intuitive - but it isn't bad once you figure it out. If the screen were a touch screen, it would be amazing.

I bought one, and it doesn't work with my Axis pedals. The bass drum only triggers half the time. Doesnt work very well with my other double pedals either.

@@Blindashitmetalasfuck Weird. I've not had any issues with the bass drum. I've got a Pearl double and I was using another average kick petal on it and didn't notice any issues at all. Only triggering half the time sounds like a fault to me. That's a pretty extreme failure rate. Can you consistently trigger the channel shorting the cable? That will at least tell you if it's in the module or the cable itself.

@@SevensPinballorama I'll do a little more troubleshooting, and get back to you. Everybody who's heard the sound that my bass drum makes thinks it sounds like shit. Me included. This terrible bmm bmm noise. Acousticly speaking.

@@Blindashitmetalasfuck Do you like the rest of the kit and the module? If so, perhaps just swapping out that trigger? I'm sure you'd have no problem selling the bass trigger. Lots of people seem to like them.

I'm only kind of a drummer. I've always played, did drums for a band when I was younger, but it was always on the side of things. I had a basic electronic set which I used to figure out what I wanted to put in my songs, but it didn't really work well enough to track the drums. This new kit should be much better (and it's honestly easier to play because it feels more like proper drums). I assume you saw the video with my evil plans for my old KISS playfield retheme, yeah?

My old Roland was the TD-5. The biggest issue I had with that module was playing the kit and recording the MIDI signals to the DAW. It's not very accurate. I'm not sure what the problem was, but latency was an issue. For live, it would be fine though. I still have the Roland hi-hat pedal - which works really well on the SE Pro. The only down side to it is when you want to just let the hats stay together and not use the pedal. The SE uses a regular hat stand - so the clutch is on top of the cymbal. With the Roland pedal, the clutch is on the floor. Not so easy to get at. Good idea though about feeding one through the other.

@@SevensPinballorama oh ... srry about the module ..with the roland im using the roland module if i remember correctly the version of hats i have has a setting where you can set the open ness / closedness ...and i thinkive got mine set to where if you want a loud open sound you'd really need ta whackl it! lol so i can acheave a decent hihat hat sound while playing double bass..... then give it a lil english if im trying to do a NIN style , closer.. disco beat it may be where im hitting it also ..im not looking for precision hihat work on my right side ...on my acoustic set this spot would be filled by an x- hat .. but yeah , if you find an old module ..even a cheaper alesis ...it will make expansion a bit easier :) come next year at tax time . i might just get another strike module unless theres a newer alesis module in '23

If you really wanted the floor tom, you'd have to sacrifice one of the rim triggers for it. It was pretty easy choice for me because the only rim trigger I use is the snare. I've always found the rim on toms hard to hit - so those are the first things I split. If you wanted more zones and pads, I think your only option is a second module. I've seen lots of setups that have a multi zone percussion pad (something like the Strike Multipad or Roland Octapad). Maybe get something like that, use the various percussion sounds there, THEN split the tom rims for more elements in the kit. The Multipad also allows for 3 external triggers, so that gives 12 zones in total. Looking at the specs, two of the trigger inputs are TRS - so possibly you can split those to single zones. 9 in the module, and 5 on external pads.

I've unboxed the set but I've been working late yesterday and tonight, so I'll probably set them up tomorrow/Sat and be playing them by the weekend. I'm very excited, I've had a Roland TD9 for over a decade, and they're still going, but it's fun to upgrade, and sparkle red too.....Hmmmmmmmm SPARKLE!! I'll let you know. Cheers.

If you aren't using the rim triggers on your toms, that's the way to go with the splitters. It will give you 4 more points to add triggers.

I don't see why not as long as the brain of the drum controller allows you to assign sounds to each port. The Strike Pro does and my old 2000 era Roland TD allowed it.

They are mono. The splitter goes from male TRS (stereo) to Left/Right TS (mono) female.

Splitting it is your first example: Put the splitter into the module, then run a cable to the tom and a cable to the cymbal. If your splitter and all triggers are working, at this point when you hit the tom head, you should hear the tom, and when you hit the cymbal, you should hear whatever was assigned to the tom rim. For the rest of it, I was going to try and type it all out, but I think it would be easier if I just make you a video. It's easy, but there are a couple of places that can hang you up. A video might be easier to follow (and helpful for others). I can make this over the weekend.

You can assign any sound to that trigger slot and change the tone, reverb, or anything else.

This is a really great set. I've been quite happy with it. I did a bunch of research before I pulled the trigger and this kit just ticked all the boxes for me. The main one being individual outputs for each sound. This ties in well on how I record music. But the pads are really nice and feel great. It's just fun to play and I never feel like I'm fighting it to do what I want (except sometimes the hi hat - but it gets more dialed in everyday).

Look up the Hosa cable model YPP117 and that will show you the configuration.

What is the special splitter?

Congrats. Tips? Not really. I spent a little time getting my hi hats working how I like. It just took a few sessions of fiddling with my stand to get it dialed in. I can't really say for sure what I did though. If you setup and find the hi hat really sucks, make sure you didn't install trigger upside down like I did. LOL. Funny thing, I also didn't realize right away there was a sensitivity adjustment on the snare. So don't over look that. It's sort of a set and forget thing, but mine was dialed a little on the "hit harder" side of things for the first week or so. I also got a kick drum patch to protect where the beater hits. Might as well save that head as long as I can. It doesn't seem to interfere with the drum sensitivity.

I don't have the Multipad, so I couldn't say with any expertise on the matter. Is the splitter you have one that takes a "stereo" signal and splits it to Left and Right channels or a Y type connector - like something you'd use if you wanted to share headphones with someone? If it's the latter, that would be the problem. There is something you can try with the trigger port to make sure the jack is actually working (and the module is configured). Plug in a normal TRS (stereo) cable into the jack. On the other end of the cable, take a short bit of metal (like a paperclip) and short the sleeve with the ring. Then short the sleeve with the tip. If everything is working correctly, this will trigger the two different assigned sounds on that trigger port. If this works, then plug your splitter into the input jack. Plug a regular TS (mono) type patch or guitar cable into one of the split jacks. Short the sleeve and tip. Does it make a sound? Which sound? Now move the mono patch cable to the other split jack. Short the sleeve and tip again. Does that make a sound? Which sound? If this is playing the same sound, but the first test you tried with the TRS cable played two different sounds, then you might have the wrong type of splitter. That's the only thing I can think of to try.

Yes, two different types. One is a "stereo" phono plug that breaks out the left and right channels into their own female jacks. This is what you use to split drum pads (like how I turned the tom rim into a cymbal pad). This is the traditional way people do this. In this case, you use a splitter which is a stereo phone plug to two stereo female jacks. These are commonly used to allow two people to plug into the same headphone jack (or something like that). I don't see why not. The Alesis ride is a 3 zone trigger (over the 2 zones on other triggers) and requires two cables. I think the bow and edge are triggered through one cable and the bell through the other - don't quote me on that, but I think that's the case. So if you wanted a complete mirror you'd need two 3 zone triggers and two splitters. You could probably just split the bow and edge to another 2 zone trigger though if you didn't need the bell on the mirror. I'll have to try this.

@@SevensPinballorama yeah , i went to open handed years ago ..but i never gave up my right side ride ..lol would love to utilize 2 on my alesis ..i also have a td6 , so that's what im using fora second h hat .. i want a second ride but ..i'd prefer them being from the same source (alesis) also, td6 's only do two zone rides ... now , if i split the trigger using the mono splitter would that duplicate the bow and edge? that's where i'm worried . or would it just send i channel down the line? hope to hear from ya soon on this :) thanx

You'll want a stereo splitter in this case. Like something you'd use for two headphones into one headphone jack. So the connection would be the splitter plugged into one of the ride jacks and one cable going to ride one, the other to ride two. Then if you had another 3 zone trigger, you'd want another headphone type splitter for the second ride jack. This is assuming bow and edge are one cable and bell is the other. I can test this tomorrow. I don't have a second 3 zone ride, but I can mimic it. If I have all the splitters and things I need to wire this all up at once, I'll make a video on it for you. I think I do.

I thought about it, but no one likes a drum solo. Maybe next time I'll take one of those royalty free youtube feel-good songs with the ukuleles and add Rob Zombie style drums to it.

@@SevensPinballorama Sounds good :D But I agree, I am a drummer myself, and I think drum solos are mostly a waste of time. But you could do a playalong to a pinball soundtrack or a Tic Tok Men song :D

If there is a solo enjoyed by many...it's a Drum solo. I get asked often to play them when playing live lol.

Maybe once the studio it fully up and working, and I'm adding drum parts to a song, I'll figure out a way to wiggle that into a video. I practice by playing along to songs without drum tracks. I know if I include a snip of this on a video, it will get a copyright strike - so I'm hesitant to do that.
