It's always nice seeing that more work and toil goes into something than you first anticipated. Gives you a better appreciation for the actual artistry of it.
fantastic vid!! i teach basic media production in higher ed and i can’t tell you how many times i’ve had to wean students away from what they’ve “learned” from red tech bros. and frankly i learned a lot with this too! thanks for making this ❤
I love this channel, please never stop making me feel insecure and second-guessing my abilities inspite of my several-degree-spanning tertiary education that nearly killed me.
I'm a person who watches these videos for the knowledge even if I won't ever apply it. Cameras are like mics where there are definite tiers between each item. However, there seems to be some type of compromise unless you pay the price. It makes sense then that many film students stay stuck between tiers 4 and 6, they want to create content but they lack the funding as well as lack the initial knowledge of what makes a good camera.
I think I remember recently Linus talking about how unnecessary it was that they were using Red cameras for their channel and AFAIK stopped using them in favor of just normal A7S’s or whatever. Anyway I think it was over for them using Red when they thought it was a good idea to try to water cool one and destroyed it permanently.
As an actual union AC, this was awesome and felt so pointed… but tbh working with the DSMC 3 bodies lately and getting a chance to work with the new digital negative… I’m a fan lol plus I don’t have 80k for a Alexa 35 package, I could afford a raptor however. But if I had a dollar for “that cameras a beast” I’d be able to afford it by now.
Tier 3 and proud of it, but I’ve also shot for massive corporations with a $500 used lens… knowing how to use your tools is always more important than the equipment itself ;)
Excellent and Informative video once again. Not shocking to see that I didn't know the majority of these cameras, and the information provided will be/is definitely a great continuous reference to go back to.
Tech youtubers that shoot in red is so wacked. bro, you are uploading this to youtube to bit crush it, where most people are watching it on there phone. vertically. If the bitrate and color depth was high enough you could shoot in 720p and nobody would notice.
Hi SBN3, first, gotta say, you’re probably my biggest inspiration atm. Second, I’m saving up for a used bmpc hopefully and use some old ass lenses, so uh, yeah. Not a camera nerd, but I want to record shit better than my iPhone (Filmic Pro is too limiting for me personally + I use Davinci Resolve) Annnnnd it got dunked, but I should’ve expected it bcos I’m not good at picking cameras
In the mirrorless hybrid cameras tier... Why nobody gives some love to Nikon? 8k 60p raw video, great colors, great overall rendition, better than Sony or Canon. And Nikon won in court the crazy Red patent issue
Lol funny this got recommended to me today I have a GH3 that’s pretty good but frankly I don’t have the resources or direction for full fledged short films right now so for just recording crap with my friends I bought a cheap old camcorder earlier. Excited for it even thought its absolutely tier 7.
found you through class of 09, but u are also a camera autist which is epic, Currently owns a red dragon for digital but have owned amira and mini before, and ofc many of the lower "tier" cameras, was wondering how that Jefferey dude in the game knew so many accurate camera lingo but now it make sense. As a die hard fan of the red dragon sensor I will say red fanboys can be excruciating for sure, but blackmagic and sony fanboys are just as annoying but are way larger in number. Arri's alev 3 sensor is nice, but the the lack of manual pixel remapping options for owner operating is very frustrating, cus you get a dead or hot pixel on the camera and you are done, you have to either download some specific software and spend 3 hours to write up a sensor pixel map to correct that specific pixel or send it off the arri, encountered it in both the amira and alexa mini. And man they are almost impossible to do a light and one man band rig on due to the lack of quarter inch or 3/8th mounting points, so you always need a baseplate or cage for it and on the mini there are no direct place on the body to mount the battery plate on which means you need a 15mm mount battery plate and all that. Also love seeing the sony f900 getting mentioned! I love that camera cus it shot all about lily chou chou. Love the aesthetic and highlight rendition it has. I also love film and used to have access to a arriflex 416 for 16mm and arricam lt for 35mm work, think maybe they can be on the tier 1 of cameras too.
watching this all the way thinking why does Linus media have this insane video camera with so many overheads for a quality point that's no really needed for commercial tech reviews? is he stupid? Glad the video answered my hypothetical with a yes lol
Hmm so my $40 soocoo is gonna be about the same as a 1k camcorder eh... I guess I should learn how to do lighting better. Either that or wait for cameras that can record the dark to become cheap... Actually I guess some sony xperias can take a picture of the stars and moon so maybe get that if anything so I can also play music and whatever.
There are large aperture mirrorless lenses available on the market. F/0.95 35mm for cropped sensors or F/1.2 24mm cropped lenses and their much more expensive full frame equivalents are mostly manual, but you can overcome that with a follow focus (mostly)
mentioning iPhones and Samsung Notes, you should probably check out Sony Xperias, effectively replacing tier 7 and tier 6, even tier 5, they can also broadcast to TV they have Exmor sensors ans Zeiss lens, they shoot in RAW and have Alpha UI IMO both iPhone and Samsung phones look far too overprocessed and have awful colour science to really take anything with, I'd rather go with Sony, Huawei or Xiaomi phones
@@JuiceJam He posted this about a year ago or so on Twitter, but his game got denied on the Apple App Store for being too crass and/or edgy to where it broke their guidelines. Weird how they allowed GTA games on there, games known for being pretty irreverent, but not this? No chance for the other platforms as well, given how much of a walled garden it is. Android and PC only for now.
Still love my gh5 (ouch) but a good video calling out the tech bros. “RU-vid academy “ has always been a myth with a few exceptions. If you want good knowledge and not a shitty LUT pack ad in disguise you have to look somewhere else.
the more I get into image quality, the more I feel like I should give up on cameras entirely and just start heading down the gaffer route, what is even the point of good cameras if you don't have good light.
Also fun fact, more theatrical stop motion films have been shot on a Canon EOS 5D MkII then any other camera, but of course they were shooting as raw stills rather then video.
@SBN3vids even if you have the most flagship 8K digital camera ever, won't Sundance or any film festival ever still gush over films shot on 35mm or 16mm cameras like Aaton because they're always such introvert hipsters like that?
17:14 Since you pointed it all out on that rant......wait til you see the racist Spider-Man movie, it will break you with many things it lacks from the parts mentioned.
Honest to God, high end iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones pretending they can be on the same level as feature films because their cameras and lenses look expensive and high quality is so laughable.
