Reaching the greatest elevation in a helicopter is a demonstration of both innovative engineering and the expertise of the pilot. Helicopter altitude records demonstrate the impressive ability of rotorcraft in overcoming the skies, whether it is by mounting tall mountains or pushing the limits of flying. These accomplishments frequently require manoeuvring through thin atmosphere, enduring severe temperatures, and facing difficult circumstances, showcasing the durability and adaptability of these airborne devices. Every flight that sets a new record signifies a significant achievement in the history of aviation, showcasing the unwavering commitment to innovation and the human desire to explore.

On June 21, 1972, Jean Boulet of France piloted an Aérospatiale SA 315B Lama helicopter to an absolute altitude record of 40,814 feet (12,440 m). At that extreme altitude, the engine flamed out and Boulet had to land the helicopter by breaking another record: the longest successful autorotation in history. The helicopter was stripped of all unnecessary equipment prior to the flight to minimize weight, and the pilot breathed supplemental oxygen.
@dickfitswell3437
@dickfitswell3437 14 дней назад
I think the flame out was due to less oxygen. She said because of the cold. I don't think the cold had anything to do with it because colder air is better for engines and compression.

I was aware of the altitude record, but the autorotation bit is quite something!

What is important is the altitude at which, a helicopter can "land" and "take off" from, with 100% reliability (certainty).

All of the above are one time achievements. Indian Air Force's Chetaks used to fly at 18000 feet daily. These french-manufactured choppers had a service ceiling of 10,500 feet, but were able to reach the glacier by crossing the Khardung La Pass at 18,379 feet. That too in a dangerous terrains.

@SV2609 You're right. 18,000 feet = 5,486½ meters.

This video is very misleading. There are different altitudes a helicopter can achieve and these altitudes are listed in the Pilots Manual: Hover Out of Ground effect- takes the most amount of power by far Hover In Ground Effect (a height of less than the rotor diameter) - takes less power than Out of Ground effect Altitude in forward flight- takes the least amount of power Once a helicopter starts moving forward, typically above 40-50 knots (translational velocity), the power requirement to maintain altitude drops dramatically. This video compares helis in forward flight to the Eurocopter AS350 B3 landing on Everest requiring hovering in and out of ground effect which is a totally different ballgame.

You may have forgotten some Helis like Focke-Achgelis Fa 223 and Flettner Fl 282(4100m). They come 1941, also come long before 1949.

@@rael5469 Instead of rambling myself I found this which summarized it pretty neatly; Standardization: The metric system offers a standardized and coherent system of measurement based on powers of ten, making conversions between units straightforward and intuitive. Global Consistency: The majority of countries around the world have adopted the metric system as their official measurement system. This promotes consistency in trade, communication, and scientific research on an international scale. (Edit): go with the flow, don't be with the fewer majority that still hangs on to imperial just because it is deeply rooted in your part of the world. There is something better. And first the changes will be hard, but things will be so much better afterwards. NASA has changed too. They used imperial ánd metric both in some missions which has led to the loss of a spacecraft once, but they use just only metric now. Because, if you háve to take one of the two, you choose metric Ease of Learning: The metric system is often considered easier to learn and teach, particularly for educational purposes. Its logical and systematic structure simplifies mathematical calculations and scientific experiments.

How is the Everest landing an altitude record when someone reached a higher altitude years before?
@dusk2dawn2
@dusk2dawn2 11 дней назад
Because landing and take-off in a helicopter requires more power than translational flight at the same altitude. Also, it will take considerable skill as the old saying among chopper pilots goes: "Hot and high - only the good ones are left".

@normanlosabia9174 F25 (nick name "Fox-bat") is reported to have breached 90,000 feet (29,527 or about thirty thousand meters). Again, what is important is the altitude at which these can take-off or land. The highest plateau in the world, Tibet is at a uniform height of about 14500 feet (roughly 4500 meters)
