8:18 I have been trying to get my parents to buy me a dirt bike since I was 9. They didn’t even let me buy that due to safety concerns, so when I more recently told them I’d rather have a motorcycle than a car when I turn 16 they freaked out. I am still determined.... wish me luck!

I will tell you that getting into it, will become progressively harder, the longer you have to wait. At 29 years old, I feel like Luke skywalker getting into the force, roughly 5 years after 5 years late........ p.s. Parents(and old ppl like me) like gear. Get some gear(old stuff on offerup if needed), or learn about and show them some gear you like........ not just a helmet.

I say good fellow, may I join you with my older, yet no less comfortable R1200GS. I commute exactly 1 mile, lol. Now in that one mile, I cross over 1000 year old Roman cobblestone roads with dips and ruts that leave cars stranded, but as I glide over them with the greatest of ease I sit smugly, and know that I am indeed, a member of a superior club. It's half-half. The reason in part the "retro" thing has taken off is because the aesthetic feels like it has more character, without any of the actual issues that old tech actually had. Most modern designs are so refined that people feel like there's nothing there (even though there is). A lot of things today are like that; modern music is a good example. it's not that old music was better per say, it's that the industry has perfected their craft of making shitty music meant to be bought and quickly forgotten for the next upcoming release. Modern tech feels the same way. THAT is why the "neo-retro" movement is picking up, because the lack of "refinement" meant that there was more aesthetic freedom in the designs from back then, since they didn't yet have the "ideal formula" for design.

@@PerfidiousLeaf yeah, I just think they look great. Modern sport bikes all look the same to me, and I couldn't care less, but a nice cafe racer makes my heart flutter. And I don't want most modern tech, with the exception of ABS. I don't even care if it's fuel injected, I just want a simple, unrefined machine that feels like it has some personality.

It's not just the KLR-650. Dual-sport bikes in general are the last bikes you'll ever want or need. Kawasaki, Suzuki, KTM, after some minor tweaks they're the ideal working-class bike.

Hey I’m that ADV commuter. Well kinda. It a Tiger 1200. No side cases. In the winter with the heated seat heated grips tall windscreen it’s like luxury to ride. No way will I be caught dead in a car here in CA when I can lane split pass those fools. Great video though. Made me laugh

True, you don't need an ADV to commute, but what if you already own one for it's intended purpose? I'm sure as hell not buying a second bike just to get to work. JA - when you roll up to the office on Monday and your bike is covered in dust or mud from you weekends adventure rides, you are bonafide ADV rider. But, under no circumstances can you roll up to a Starbucks on your bike. Even if your dying of thirst and starvation. You forgot about a Honda NC700/750X guy (me). The most pragmatic bike out there. Economical, reliable, cheap, good quality and not to exiting, actually we wanted an adventure bike but couldn't afford it ;) usually we are over 50 (not me) and very upset if somebody calls it a scooter only because its an automatic haha

They don’t sell many NC700x’s in the US. So, they are like Panda’s in the wild, but a lot less cool. I rode a K1200GT for years and dropped down to the DCT 700x because, yes, I am having wrist issues from 36 years of riding and beating off. The Goldwing and Africa twin offer the same DCT transmission as well. So, i guess we’ll call them scooters along with anyone with a rekluse clutch or a quick shifter.

Some aren't bad, the new Honda CB1000 pulls it off well, as does the Yamaha XSR line. But they are more of modern bikes with retro inspired styling, not bike made to look retro while being mechanically modern.

Hahaha, knowing how things actually work and being able to do all that "wrenching" is part of the fun. I even hear that being able to weld isn't witchcraft, it's a valuable skill. Yep, I built a bobber based on my '78 SR500 and am currently working on restoring an '81 Honda CB125S. Even worse is taking a cherry rolling chassis '71 Suzuki TS100 and doing an engine switch with a TS185.

better you buy a Honda MT 125 and put a CR barrel, piston, carb and expansion chamber on it. You blow off stock 250's no problem. ( spoken from experience. Do it with an MT250 and 400's will fear you.) You'll need new CR inlet and exhaust flanges too. You don't need to change the heads. All bolt on stuff but you'll run premix as CR's dont have the lil hole to bolt the oil feed pipe into. You could drill and tap one.....

I can agree. Despite it's weight, that bike's front brake is too good, but the rear brake is useless unless you use it with engine brake which is also strong.

I don't care what you say, I love my 'RE 500. It's more fun to ride than any of the 'modern ' bikes I've owned - every time I ride it it puts a huge smile on my face and no, not because of the vibrations! but because it has no pretension of being anything other than what it is, a great old thumper with a heart of gold and a comfy seat. The only downside is that whenever you pop to the supermarket for a pint of milk, it takes you ages the wrest it away from an admiring crowd of older fellows who want to tell you about the o e they had in the fifties - so it doesn't just make me happy, it makes others happy too. What more could you ask out of a bike?😁
