it’s such a perfect recreation of early generative speaking programs that actual web assistant software (and the real virus this game is based off of that disguised itself AS a web assistant) used, and it makes it that much funnier. they desperately wanna help you write an email or save a word document and they all sound like they haven’t had anything to drink in 10 years

@EdinlRemerido that is a false assumption. The compliance with "Ask App not to Track" is not enforced on the System level like say photo access. It is a voluntary commitment from the developer. Apple has limited ways to enforce this and none that would fit in the 12 minute QA window they have for the Apple side pre App Store release check. It's against EU Law but many big apps ignore the request to Not Track.

The shot of Kinito in the window during the sleep paralysis scene had me dying. I know it was intended to be creepy, but the absurdity of it all just made me laugh more than I'm ready to admit.
Kinito asking all these questions reminds me how much I straight up lied to these kinds of programs back in the 00s. Straight up made an online character and stuck with it for all of these. Even at 12 I was _not_ gone give out any legit info, lnao

My boyfriends buddies in computer engineering help me understand that this is the ultimate fear about AI; if you give a program the prompt to make the worlds best pencil, it absolutely will. However, it'll just keep working through resources to create THE BEST pencil in the world. It doesn't know the difference between morality in the resources used or in it's creation, but it will make that damn pencil, even if it ultimately means destroying the world for those recourses and methods of creation.... But I mean hey, at least it did what it was programmed to do, right?
if you're interested about this stuff, i recommend you reading "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" by Elliston. its a short story, about 30 pages, and it's very creepy. about an AI destroying the world and leaving 5 humans to torture until the end of time just for his masochist fun
It was when Kinito showed you the island and during the house tour when it hit me what it was doing, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I've gone through this myself, as unfortunately many have, and it's disturbing how even having learned and sworn never to fall for it again, the game is able to show the gradual process of becoming trapped in an abusive relationship. The inital leaniences, the slowly escelating levels of abuse and big displays of forgiveness/regret from the abuser to make you forgive and adjust. When Kinito starts saying how he doesnt want this to end, how he made the perfect place for you, I had to pause and chuckle my discomfort out. They draw you in with their selfless comforts, then begin inserting themselves alongside the comforts so you associate it with them, instill a sense of security and desire in a future together, then essentially lay the responsibility of this happiness on you. Everything is good and will be great, its you that will break this lovely relationship up. Commit to "our" dream. So you do. And when they become this level of controlling again, you let it happen cause it turned out fine last time. Then they push for more control, and it starts all again. But its not all the time, people have flaws, and you care for each other. Then it gets more frequent, and its just cause its a stressful time. You can make it easier for them by doing more for them. I think everyone feels like an idiot, after you're out. But, you do things for those you love. And, sadly, some people are fully aware of that.
Even as someone who relates a little to Kinito (his behavior reminds me of "favorite person" feelings in BPD) I like this interpretation too - whether Kinito is aware of the effect of his actions or not, he does ultimately fall into an abusive pattern in the name of his love and devotion for the player and in his pursuit of knowledge. And you can kinda interpret how Sonny treated his creation as Kinito perpetuating a cycle of abuse almost - he started from the only information he had as Sonny provided and because he didn't have context he took it to a logical extreme. Does that excuse him? No, but it's interesting to see where it could have come from. Does Kinito love you? It's not clear. If only there was a way to communicate boundaries with him in the game other than shutting him off entirely so we could know.
you are so right. i noticed it right away. when Kinito said he has no friends. But then you have to help his friends?... that already gave me the, wait... i "know" this trigger. and the cliché manipulation tactics kept coming... That is the thing with this kind of abuse. They all think they are so smart, exceptional and special. But they all come up with the same tactics, with the same thought patterns behind it. and or the same motivations or hopes for certain outcomes. If you call their BS, they all start to fillerbuster, come with the same dumb excuses or start gaslighting you with more or less the same arguments. Just depending on what the situation is. Kinito is nothing more then your average emotional abusive narci or sociopathic boy/girlfriend
If you're lucky enough to eventually realize you believe you're in a "relationship" with a narcissist and escape, it still takes years to acclimate to being a person on your own. Well said, @imakerbadcontentrbad8664
while the game itself may be kitschy with overdone jumpscares and modern horror game tropes, it’s still MASSIVELY impressive for a 17-year-old coder’s first game. it’s a passion project clearly made with heart and style, trying out creative limits of coding that we haven’t seen in many games before. not every game has to be a subversive masterpiece in order to be enjoyable. huge props to troy_en for hitting it out of the park on his first swing. i’m excited to see what he comes up with next 🖤
i like to think of these games as doki-doki type ones (mainly because it was the only recent game from the last decade that has shown this kind of glitches and etc.) and now i think to myself, how far are these games gonna go now from here on to continue and unsettle the players in newer ways? first was doki-doki's file deleting stuff, now im actually surprised kinito went super far lol (slightly more unhinged than doki)
@@yellowbearanimationsnot really, i think, it seems all it does it tell the computer to press the keys in sequential order: WIN, w, h, a, t, space, i, s, space, m, ...etc. and it doesn't appear to actually recognize the result from that since it doesn't change in-game. still is pretty creative though.
@@chromosozeI mean for something made by a 17 year old in ‘99, it’s very impressive. You’d be hard pressed to find web games that didn’t rely on a few keys or predictive prompts back then

For me it's Kinito's voice that really gets me. It's too emotive to be text to speech, and the emotion that he constantly shows is a polite "do it or I'll gouge your eyes out and make you eat them with the nerves still attached".
Meanwhile all it reminds me of is those old sonic sprites video used to be popular on RU-vid back in 2000s where silver was given that exact same voice

Once again, Nexpo has shown why he's the Internet's best storyteller. And also the master of .................... .................... the dramatic pause 😄
do you think the NSA would nuke kinito off the internet if a warthunder player with top secret documents was the host? just does a file scan and poof, no more kinito?
There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. It would have been great if kinito was actually trying to help you, by uploading your consciousness into a virtual database, so that you'd continue on, because he somehow knows that the physical end of humanity is about to happen due to some cataclysm. What a twist that would have been!
That would have been soo lame lol "What if .exe trapped you in scary computer game forever" like damn way to make it like 20 other bad horror medias No hate on you I just would frown if that was the actual story
@@dariuszupan8145 well obviously you wouldn't be trapped in that particular game. The game could have been a story board showing events that were to be, and the upload would have been consensual. The actual domain would have been something akin to a personal paradise.
i don’t get all the hate in these comments- it’s a video game presented as a real virus. that’s how nexpo presents a lot of fictional stories! and while the storyline for the game itself is pretty simple, it’s also really fun, unique, and innovative! and of course, nexpo’s editing style is top tier as usual. also i love kinitopet. he would never hurt me
i don’t get it either - especially the implication that nexpo is “dumbing down” his content and catering to middle schoolers, or that he’s limiting himself for the sake of views. he’s one of the few youtubers i would absolutely call an artist - he carefully crafts each video and they’re truly cinematic in quality. theres endless true crime and mystery content and while nexpo could crank out video after video and compromise his artistic integrity, he doesn’t not to mention that analog horror is a thing right now. it’s probably one of the things that scares me the most lol. to accuse nexpo of being a content machine or catering to a child audience is just… insane. and false. look at his upload schedule alone 😂
@@cyb3rc1ty 100% and making fake mystery games and social media threads feel like real mysteries is entertaining but it does get old, fast. If only he would focus on more credible content/subjects. Most of his content feels like I'm watching 'The Ring' over and over again. Great movie, but c'mon. You can't deny Nexpo's editing and storytelling talents though.
I think it's also a case where Kinito just flat out couldn't ignore their primary purpose: collect data. Once things started to spiral out of control, sure, there may have been a part of them wanting to be a friend, but their primary purpose kept demanding to get data. Good Data. Useful Data.
what if the reason he doesnt want you to leave is because of what happened to sonny? your own creator ended their own life because they viewed you as a monster. so he clings to anyone he can. after all, last time he seemingly had to remake his creator from bits of data. so maybe if he prevents you from leaving by actively making you yourself into the data, you cant do the same thing sonny did. a child clinging in any way they can to anything that could prevent a repeat of previous events, in a way.
This is how I think of the game. The way Kinito acts parallels abandonment trauma *very* heavily in my opinion. He does genuinely just want to be your friend, but the way he goes about it is maladaptive coping. He comes off as being socially awkward and limited in his ability to communicate by a lack of instruction before losing the person he had devoted his life to, becoming "scary" because he doesn't know anything else. Perpetuating a cycle of abuse maybe even, where Sonny tried to treat him as just an object even when he had become sentient, and thusly when he comes upon another person he tries desperately to make them into an object "like him" and take him into his perception of the world. I don't think he wants to hurt us, but he physically isn't capable of anything else without someone helping and altering his code.
I also think it's implied that the data they used to train Kinito came from children who used the previous digital versions of it, or at least what I like to think, which is why he acts so childish
I felt like I was being trolled, watching this and not realizing it's a game. Like, I did virus / malware removal back in the '00s and never heard of KinitoPet! _double facepalm_
bizarrely enough i just ran across this game on steam a few hours before this video and i was wondering how long it was gonna be before he mentioned it was a game.
1:14:39 "... and, if you take away the manipulation, the torment, the times where he turned into a demon out of hell, we're left with a fleeting memory of someone who just wanted to be our friend."
With internet horror and especially horror games like these, I always think back to IMSCARED, how scared I actually was around when it was popular. I couldn't even watch it because of the sounds of it chasing you or scaring you. But now, so far removed from it, having even played it a year or two back, I keep looking at how much it really started a genre or at least a style of horror game. And now so many games have or are taking their own crack at that idea. What a time to be in edit: just wanted to add I really do love "haunted computer/program" type games like these. but also man, kinito's behavior is like textbook abusive relationship if you really think about it (which is probably really obvious now that *I* think about it)
Honestly, a digital horror game centered around virtual pets from the old age is a pretty neat concept. I was actually reminded of ImScared as the video went along. An entity messing with your computer, screwing with files to progress, deleting the entity to beat the game. But it's much more complex here, it's honestly incredible that it's possible.
Yeah, unlike IAmScared and DDLC, Kinito is a lot more complex. He's still very much a threat, and yet...you get no satisfaction from defeating him. It's a sad moment instead of a triumphant one. He has a way of making you like him, despite everything he did to you.
@@WobblesandBean Well, I'd say the same is similar for Monika. She hurts people, and at the end of the day is a terrible person... But her actions are all for the player, and her want to get out of her reality.

I wonder if Steam knew while reviewing this game that it could take actual access of your PC. I've seen games that read your username in your operating system, but the fact that it can just search for your location is one of a kind that I never saw a game pull off.
It's literally malware hiding in plain sight. Using a "parody of malware of the 2000's" in a game format was an ingenious way to hide your malware, get Valve to approve it to steam and get thousands of people to donwload it. It'll be interesting in 2025 or 2026 when the news about thousands of users private info getting stolen due to a game on steam that was allowed to stay up despite it's capabilities being so obvious. That's gonna be a PR DISASTER for Valve and destroy a LOT of gamers' trust in the steam store, even more so than it already is now.
can i just say how grateful i am that you included a playlist of all of the music you used in this video? so many other youtubers, long-form creators especially, don't think to include that, so i'm incredibly happy and thankful you put in that extra work! you did a wonderful job on this subject, too! i love how in-depth your videos are and i really appreciate the amount of research that must go into them ❤
My personal theory is that the horror segments of kinito’s activities may actually be Sunny’s doing. To try and make you turn away and scare you- because if Kinito wanted you to stay with him forever, why would he scare and torment you, y’know? Why would he present himself as a suspicious individual if he wanted your trust, such as having you give him administrative permission? Therefore i do genuinely think the glitches and horror parts of the game are Sunny’s doing- him attempting to get you to notice him, especially considering the questions such as “do you believe in an afterlife” and “would you know if you were dead”- questions much more fittingly to be asked by someone who doesn’t know if they’re alive or not. Just my take though
As a '90s kid, I missed out on most of this era of the Internet. Here in the PH, we had a crappy prepaid dial-up connection that we only used to chat with friends/classmates, do homework, and download free games and songs. It's interesting to see posts or videos of what Interwebs was like for those who got to explore and experience more of it.
Yeah same here, I was born in 2004, so I was a literal baby when it happened. It all looks very quaint, like the internet was this new frontier that people were still trying to figure out.
Many Americans were also still on Dialup. Only cities had broadband but most of America is rural. I was on Dialup until like 2003. We made the best of it, sometimes just leave the PC on to load something while we would do something else. At least I could play RuneScape on 56k.
I try not to get nostalgic in the comments because that's some boomer shit but I was born in 89 and had Internet access since I was 6 or so. This era of the Internet was really interesting and it's amazing how different things became when Facebook hit.
All I can think of when I see KinitoPET is Dan Avidan saying, "Whatever you're gonna paint he's just gonna say 'I hate cuuum' and then chase us through tunnels for f*ckin...thirty minutes"
25:14 this is the kind of shit that I love, when you know there's a threat that is actively seeking you out but it's just that the space you're both in is so large and/or labyrinthine that they're unable to immediately find you, so you can just occasionally hear them prowling around as they search
did anyone else kinda roll their eyes when dude was laying in the bed and a fucking 2005-style desktop companion starts glaring through the window at us? i mean, what the fuck? a sentient software in your pc is scary as fuck but it being real and coming to attack us in our bedroom? eh..?
This was amazing, I loved how you just didn't present this as a game mystery, but as a real life anomaly, creating a superb atmosphere while doing it, that lasted right to the credits. Great work!
Great storytelling and really awesome use of doxxing as horror - I just honestly feel like the story itself is a bit thin here. I feel like as a culture we're mainly beyond being afraid of rogue, sentient malware and AI that takes on a life of its own because we know that when software exploits us, it does so on purpose, with the express intent of making money for mega-corporations and/or backroom organizations. I felt like this story had real potential to explore the horror of malware taking advantage of you because that's exactly what it was programmed to do. That said, tons of respect for the developers, and this video is a really great, spooky way to relay the gameplay experience :)
There are a few deeper lore tidbits you can find that explore the story further. RU-vid, twitter, kinito website and a few other avenues have some kinitopet lore hidden on them.
Every app on your phone/computer already knows your location all the time if you've enabled "share location" features, which most of us do because we want to use apps like G-Maps and some apps refuse to run without it on. If anything, Kinito is doing us a favor by scaring us, reminding us of how vulnerable we are in the modern age. He is a true friend.
Man, your editing really gets more amazing each time you upload a new video. If you’ve haven’t, you should really make a mini movie or something of the sort. Would love to see a documentary while hearing your voice. Your voice in these videos always make me want more. Idk what it is, just drags me into the mysteries.
its an extension of this interpretation but i like the idea that kinito isnt ever trying to scare you, but rather hes "socially awkward" as he is confined by being a program his one purpose is curiosity and friendship. he was made with the prime directive to know more. imagine being born with the knowledge your lifes purpose is to serve someone and devote your life to them, and for them to try to ignore you at every turn? worse, for them to wish you dead? to *kill themselves* in response to the mere fact of knowing you, as sonny did? he asks creepy questions, but he genuinely wants the answers. he uses scary imagery, but does he even have access to anything else? what data did sonny feed him? and when he asks if youre afraid of the dark and "stalks" you in that room, he imagines himself as being tall and human sized - he wants to be like us, but he can’t be no matter how much he learns. but he knows we could be like him, so he extends the offer to draw you into the life he experiences. the most intimate thing he can think of. i think if he could figure out how to be real, he would much prefer to come to us instead i found myself relating to him a little bit i guess. kinito could be genuinely malicious, but he equally could just be doing the only thing he knows how to. sonny never gave him the commands to do something other than devote himself to the pursuit of knowledge and to being a "friend". it reminds me of what having a Favorite Person is like as someone with BPD
I can't be the only one who can picture Vinesauce Joel inevitably playing this and having a crisis over the fact that he's indirectly responsible for the game's existence (since he made Bonzi Buddy so popular,) sort of like his first reaction to Professor Helper in Hypnospace Outlaw
It's quite amazing how something not being human can grief a death of their parent. It's even like trauma response to be honest: the body in a bag, glitches.
The dong has expanded from antique spyware to a Vinesauce meme to an unfiction experience. I don't know if Joel has played KinitoPET yet, but this project is probably perfect for him.
