Here is the second video of my new series of steam locomotives in their Heyday. This time its the FANTASTIC A1 Peppercorns. Recorded as the most reliable locomotives in the BR days, these were the last of the LNER's express passenger locomotives. Designed By Arthur Peppercorn, 49 were built, all of which were scrapped. In 2008, a new A1 Peppercorn was finished, the 50th locomotive in the class, no. 60163 "Tornado". All Footage is copywright of their respected owners, this is only for entertainment purposes and no profit is being made from this. Thank You!

In their Heyday, the A1s were truly powerful and magnificent machines

And so they may remain....one of the best classes of locomotives built...could be a rough ride at times...but an A1 would always get you to your destination. Thanks for posting this video...brings back many memories for me?

Looks like these engines never suffered from flat spots, they always smooth out their wheels when starting a train.

Even though we have Tornado to carry their legacy, I still wish some of the original A1s got a chance to be preserved.

Hard to think it was over 50 years ago. I grew up in Potters Bar and was regularly taken as a small boy to see the steam trains. To think that the Deltics and the HSTs that subsequently took over front line duties on the ECML have themselves passed into history.

The A1's are a fantastic type of engine. It does make history happy that Scotsman became an A3 but left only but none A1's left. But, Scotsman does have the A1 feel and is still a great A1/A3.
@dubsy1026
@dubsy1026 6 лет назад
This isn't the original Scotsman type A1, this is the one designed by Arthur Peppercorn in the 1940s. Tornado, built in 2008, is still around today. Scotsman is very different to these locos IMO.

Last withdrawn I believe, though I think having Tornado was ultimately the better outcome. She’s largely original in her design, just factory fresh and with some of the kinks ironed out. I think she’s more impressive than a preserved A1 ever would have been, the sheer dedication and ingenuity that went into her, really a work of art. But then again, Mungo would’ve definitely been a star had she escaped the torch.

This melody was originally part of "Jupiter, Bringer of Jollity" from Holst's "The Planets". The melody is heard somewhere near the middle of the movement. I performed it as a senior in high school. This particular chorale section has been adapted and rearranged for several things, similar to the hymn section of Sibelius' "Finlandia". Of all the arrangements I've heard of the Jupiter chorale, this has to be one of the best. If you haven't heard the original, I personally recommend looking it up; it's well worth the time :)
