The A93 Through Craighall Gorge

Just north of Blairgowrie lies the Craighall Gorge. For years, the A93 ran along a narrow shelf on the western slopes of the gorge but this 3/4 of a mile section of road was prone to collapses as the steep and unpredictable nature of the gorge had a tendency to unpin the road's engineering.
During a particularly wet night in 1985, a large section of the road was washed into the gorge, leaving a massive gouge in the road between Blairgowrie and Braemar. Two weeks later, a Bailey Bridge had been erected across the gap and traffic lights installed to control traffic flow across the narrow structure. The bridge was only meant to exist as a temporary structure but it wasn't until 2008 that the new road bypassing the gorge was finally opened.
The new road climbs rather sharply as it leaves Blairgowrie and is separated from the old route by a large retaining wall during the ascent. Other than the climb, the new road is fairly unremarkable as it just passes through open farmland but if you decide to take a walk along the old road, you'll be treated to a unique walk along a well known section of road that holds memories for anyone who ever had the pleasure of driving it themselves.
If you watch this video from 9 minutes in, you'll get a rare glimpse of the former A93 alignment in it's final days ( • The Lecht and Glen She... .

Memories. Crossed that bridge many, many times. And on the road before it as a child. Your wee dig at Fife Council did make me chuckle. Coming north out of the gorge round that long left was a great overtaking spot. The short straight and being able to see oncoming traffic (or not) over to the right, you could easily do two or even three vehicles if you had the run on them. I had the run on them.

Nice one. It's amazing just how quickly our infrastructure can become a part of history. Its great to see it being documented like this before its forgotten.

It's great to see you have a RU-vid channel to show off your explores! I follow you on Flickr and have spoken to you on there briefly. I'm Keith, friends with David Love whom you showed around Cults! Hope to see more from you on here.

Could you please keep the videos coming every year as an update on how nature takes over. I have fond memories of that bridge too. I must try and get back one day and walk it. Cheers

Yeah, it's a great wee explore. It was your heads up last year that brought us together, so to speak. I think the erosion looks like it's getting worse. Thought you might've gone through the culvert, as one of my great SPiS memories is of Bro waddling upstream.

I did have another view of your Craighall Gorge video but not until I'd filmed and edited this one as I wanted to make sure I delivered my own take on the A93 and didn't accidentally rip off everything that was in yours. I'd say mine is more informative whereas yours is more amusing, if that's a fair conclusion to draw? I would have gone through the culvert but when I'm by myself, I tend to take less risks as there would be no-one around to help me if I fell and broke a bone or something. It's interesting that we both recorded a scene of the Craighall Gorge cliff face. It's something I spotted on my first ever visit to the road in 2010 and ever since, I've been meaning to locate a safe route down.

Great wee vid. Had a wee stroll up there last year. Would love to actually get down into the gorge.

I wouldn't mind getting down into the gorge either. There's probably a really easy way to get down there but I just haven't bothered looking for it. I think the best thing to do would be go to down to the river near the southern end of the abandoned road where it's not as high up, then walk along to the cliff. Next time I'm there, I'll need to look to see if it can be done.

I would like to second your statement about Fife roads and council. They are truly shite. Great video great location. Seen a photo of this bridge years ago and headed out to it to see if we could bridge swing it. As you have shown. We were very disappointed when we seen the hight.

The ClanAdventures: For some reason youtube isn't giving me the option to reply directly to you so hopefully you'll see this message. I live near to Dura Den who have left the road in a flood damaged state for the last two years, hence why I felt it was appropriate to insult Fife Council publicly like that. Due to the traffic lights, it wasn't a bridge you could really properly look over when driving and as a passenger, the route was too hemmed in by trees to see what was going on. On my first visit here in 2010, I was surprised to see that the bridge didn't go over anything and on closer inspection, I noticed the former retaining wall sitting below the bridge line and that's when I suspected the bridge was put in due to subsidence. When I got home, I researched the route and that confirmed my suspicions.

I've still not tried to get right down into the gorge, although I've been meaning to. I think the best strategy would be to walk down near the Blairgowrie side of the old road then try and follow the river up till you reach the cliffs. I recently found out there's a nice looking suspension bridge a few miles north of the old road which passes over the gorge so I may check that out next time I'm in the area.

If you think Fife's bad at maintaining its roads, take a drive west along the A85 and see if you can tell when Perth&Kinross becomes Stirlingshire 😅😅

They just gave up half way along Loch Earn. The last push to Lochearnhead is horrific.
