Not sure if you are aware but the Flaxmill is the first building built on a steel structure. It’s that very building that showed the way to all the skyscrapers in New York and the building has been termed ‘The Grandfather of New York’
Hi Bendan! ☺ So nice to see the Nice Weather again 🏞 it would be neat to see a Canal there 🚤 Love to see the These old places ! Thanks & have a great Week 🐥🦋🌾🌻
It was a beautiful day and I agree, it would be a lovely addition to Shrewsbury if it was restored 😊. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment Sharon 👍
Watching these videos and seeing the comments is pretty surreal as im down many of these routes most days. I never thought twice on it as its a way to keep busy and clear your head during lockdown but we are lucky to have them!
Thanks Josh 👍 I know what you mean 😊 I didn't even know it used to be canal until I did some research but looking at it becomes so obvious. Plenty more videos to come!
Hi Brendan, Great video, it's really great to hear the history & see pictures as well. It would be nice to see what's left of the canal cleaned up, after all wildlife do live there. I'm sure the ducks appreciated the conversation with you. 😊 It looks like a lovely place to go for a walk. Thank you for sharing...take care of yourself, stay well, be safe! Hope the family is well. Please give Mika a cuddle for me! 💖 Much love Kathy x
Thanks Kathy 👍 it was a surprise to me that Shrewsbury had a canal as well so it was a nice addition to this walk 😊 take care and stay safe 🙏 have a good week
As an ex Sundorne lad It's good to see the old canal looking just like i remember it. Thoe it would be good to see it in full water with narrow boats . Plus it was good to hear you pronounce the name of the town correctly Lol. As i used to say No o in Shrewsbury. 👍
We’ve been talking about finding the Shrewsbury canal for ages. Where did you start the walk Brendan? I can hear another trip to Shrewsbury calling! Thank you.
when i was a lot younger we used to walk or bike from primly manor all the way to Uffington and then go up Haughmond hill to play or go tiddler catching in the waterfall that goes under the road
Sorry, not watched the whole video yet but there's a pub called The Canal tavern which has been closed for some time in Castlefields! It's a shame it's never going to reopen... great video, cheers!
They are working to restore the whole lot all the way from Shrewsbury to Norbury Junction. It will be the work of decades. I'm not sure they would have been bringing coal into Shrewsbury because the mines at Hanwood, Leebotwood and others would have made the area self sufficient in that respect. They may even have been exporting coal (along with the flax). They were constructing another canal into the town from the West but only got as close as Weston Lullingfields.
Thanks for the update on the canal 👍 shame it's taking so long to restore but I suspect there are some financial constraints. Will be lovely when it is restored 😊
I agree and Shrewsbury and Newport canal trust are trying to raise funds to restore it but Shropshire council should really fund more of this brilliant project 👍
Maybe you should have filmed the destruction to the woodland and wildlife at Berwick Wharf , going on now, to restore the canal. Trees being felled is criminal. Natures habitat destroyed, and for what? The canal can never be used again? Yes our history should be restored, but at environmental cost and nature displacement?
