Andy Ruiz was the unified heavyweight champion of the world. It was also the worst thing to happen to his career.

No, it's only a major achievement if you're an untalented guy who either lucked out and/or worked your way into a title. If you're a talented guy like Ruiz is, simply getting to the top of one of the alphabet mountains is a major disappointment. Andy Ruiz Jr. became the new James Buster Douglas. He made a huge upset by defeating the best HW in the world, the unified HW champion (WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO) Anthony Joshua by a KO. Then afterwards, like Douglas could care less to defend the championship and strive for new glories. I mean seriously, since Ruiz Jr. lost the championship way back in 2019. How many fights have he done? JUST TWO (!) two freakin fights in 5 years.... One in 2021, against unrated 40+ Chris Arreola where Ruiz looked and fought poorly and One fight in 2022 against Luis Ortiz. He threw away his career completely.
@WarioSaysSo
@WarioSaysSo 3 месяца назад
@@Papellxhase James Buster Douglas was a great tallent and could have been a great champion if he desired so, but he never had that drive. And when he put all into it, he was truly a skilled, athletic and sharp boxer. The sharp jab he had, the solid combinations he made and speed in those shots was true art. Problem was that outside of October 1987-January 1990 period he was to much ON/OFF and wasted a lot of his tallent. Several times in his career he lost fights he could for real have won if he had had more killer instinct, but just let them come. The loss of his sweet mother who had always supported him suddenly died just 2 weeks from the biggest fight of his life. Yet Buster managed to fight through the greef to fight "The baddest man on the planet". Douglas used all his athletic tallent, all his sharp punches and combinations and Tyson could do nothing but eat leather for 10 rounds. And Tyson who had bragged at a night club for soul legend James Brown: "I can beat Buster any day with my eyes closed".

His weight had nothing to do with his loss. He won the 1st fight because Joshua hurt him and went in for the kill he got in Ruiz’s range and he got caught. The 2nd fight Joshua was not going to get in Ruiz’s range he kept the fight on the outside.
@SaiSaiGre

People lie so much about this fight that it's frustrating because the whole point of the rematch was Joshua fighting the fight he'd been trained to fight in their 1st meeting. Joshua got reckless and excited and it opened him up. He and Rob McCracken mention in the dazn mini documentary that Joshua was actually getting frustrated in the 2nd fight coz he wanted to crack, and his team kept telling him to pull back and box, and that was frustrating because he was seeing it work, but all he wanted to do was pay Andy back but he had to remain disciplined. I'm paraphrasing btw

More importantly, he didn't hurt him and that was the issue. AJ was distracted by the occasion, and after Wilder having a big first round KO shortly before so he felt he needed to impress on his debut on the way to making the big Wilder fight eventually. The moment Ruiz went down, instead of thinking about it or actually assessing if he was hurt, AJ just went in with limited defence thinking Ruiz was vulnerable. That was the main mistake, if Ruiz was vulnerable although it's not impossible AJ could have got caught it's less likely. But Ruiz wasn't, the mistake was thinking he was hurt.

@@SaiSaiGre Andy was just too fast for Joshua, plus Mexicans love close combat, n Andy did just that, attacked Joshua like an angry bull, which Joshua never expected.. In the 2nd fight, Joshua's camp knew better than to go toe to toe vs Andy Ruiz, plus friendly judges were gonna give him the win with him just jabbing n running, like seen with Tank vs Cruz.. In the end it's all about ratings, like in any sport..

also the company he kept. During the time he was the World Champion, there were some hype boys around him acting like gangsters and yelling at anyone whom they were passing by and behaving in a very rude manner. I don't think Andy is the kind of a person who would insult others just for fun, but he couldn't control the parasites who leeched on to him the moment he became a world champion. I really appreciate how grounded Crawford and Usyk are after their big victories.

What's important to remember about "one-hit wonders" in boxing is that, though they might not be consistent, they were simply better than the opponent on that night. Whether it be physically or mentally, they bested the opponent, and that's worth celebrating in a sport that takes a lot of balls to participate in. You can try to make arguments for "lucky" punches, but it will be flimsy. What I'm saying is there's no reason for these guys to be so down on themselves for being a one-time champ, or even a gatekeeper.
@P71ScrewHead

Amen to that.. Nobody but underdog fans believed Andy had a chance, n his performance in the ring surprised the world even more than what Cruz did to Tank.. Sadly, Andy lost all care for his career after that win.. He knew better than to gain 70lbs for the rematch.. Guy thought that black dude would give him a rematch but anyone with common sense knew Joshua would seek to avoid Andy if he got the win just like Tank is doing with Cruz..

It was far from the upset of the century, AJ was just stupidly overhyped. Andy Ruiz Jr. was 32-1 with his only loss being a close mixed-decision against Parker a Top 10 guy. AJ was 22-0 but also only had a awkward point decision over Parker and had to give it his all to beat 41-year old Klitschko. Nothing suggested there was or even that there is a huge gap between the two guys. Everyone just thinks AJ is the protagonist.

You're showing pics of Morrison and Buster Douglas...implying that they were, somehow one-hit wonders. That's an absolutely false notion regarding those two fighters specifically as both Morrison and Douglas had quite a few notable victories against viable Heavyweight contenders and champions themselves.
@ZaydDepaor
@ZaydDepaor 2 месяца назад
Also it is incorrect to say Douglas didn't turn up for the Holyfield fight... Yes he had put on weight, but he clearly came to fight...most people didn't watch the fight, Douglas was trying but Holyfield was probably at his very best and was sensational and dangerous in that fight (I don't know if roids were involved) but Douglas was clearly upset and disappointed to lose, he didn't want to lose the belt.
