No it won’t. It’s moving to pc, gender quota hires now with those female commentators. Even watching highlights of a game with the one woman commentator is like nails on a chalkboard. We’re likely a few short years away from diversity quotas including a gender fluid blue haired man with tits in a push up bra doing between the glass interviews at ice level. This cancer has only started to metastasize.
I will still chirp Red Wings fans to this day, but Red Wings fan have my respect, this was a fun Era for everyone growing up, I really want to see Detriot develop an amazing team in the future and maybe one day we will see a Wings/Avs cup final. Nowadays the Avs are rivals to the Blues/Wild but it just isn't the same.
@@hockeyboy379 I kinda do to, but I am also glad that Detroit is in the East, because of the whole time zone thing. Having games that start at 10PM for those in Detroit is brutal on the fans in Detroit.
Greatest rivalry in recent sports history. If you haven't watched it, ESPN+ documentary "Unrivaled" is a must. Its 2 hours long but worth it. As a Wings fan I thought I knew just about everything about this era rivalry, but oh was I wrong. Although I let go of my hatred for Claude long ago watching that brought about a new respect for not only the Avs players, and hockey as a sport, but for what each team and its players went through during this time. Not gonna lie I think a lot of us Wings fans were really happy to see Bourque win a cup finally. The class guys like Yzerman and Sakic showed is outstanding. This was an excellent video buddy. Liked and followed
I was the only Avs fan in a Canadian household of Red Wings fans. This was a fun period of my childhood lol but Yzerman was always one of my favourite players too
@@MeanStreamFraudCast Mom from Detroit, Dad from Toronto. I rooted for the Leafs till the non-call high stick on Doug Gilmore. I turned to my dad and said I'm a Wings fan now and he said that was probably a good idea lol. Always loved Sakic and Foote.
As just a casual hockey fan, it's easily the best hockey rivalry I've ever seen, and it's the best sports rivalry too. Remember at the time, Colorado had never won anything in sports, and now you're telling us we are facing the best team in Hockey...and look at that, the Avs won. It was pure vitriol. I went to Detroit to see a game at Tiger Stadium it's last year, and during a baseball game, it got out that I was from Colorado, and soon the natives are heckling me. It was that level of hatred, and your point is exactly right: the quality made it. Almost never do the two best teams absolutely hate each other. The only two years either team didn't win in that seven year band it was because the Stars were the last team standing, not the best team. The Avs became OUR team very quickly. Plus, no one liked Scotty Bowman. You tolerated him because he's the best coach in history, much like Hoodie in football today. What used to anger Colorado fans was the way the Red Wings continued to ambush the Avs, meaning they would make sure they had the arena and everything just right, and then throw the first sucker punch. It might be wrong, but it FELT like that. The Lemeiux hit was truly cheap and wrong. And, I'm happy to say those Red Wings teams were the best team. Not by much, but they were better. And that was why it was so fun. They brought out the best and the worst of each other.
As an Oilers fan we still love that 1998 series when we beat Colorado. I used to get tired of seeing the same four teams (Col., Det, Dallas, and NJ) in the finals every year but that’s what brings a rivalry.
Dallas was a good secondary rival next to this one for the Avs. I never got that feeling when Dallas played Detroit though it just felt like two good teams
Good job highlighting the most important moments from this rivalry. I will say you should probably have highlighted the air tackle between Shanny and Roy in the video package. I also think the Statue of Liberty goal in 2002 was an important (and awesome) moment that was left out.
@@PinholesGraham I saw it, but it was a bigger dramatic moment that deserved some explanation! The Avs could have clinched the series with a win, and that blunder came in the 2nd period of a scoreless game. Roy doesn't showboat there and it likely would have been the Avs winning the Cup.
Dude, excellent video! Gorgeously encapsulates the incredible skill and bitter hatred between these two teams at the height of their league dominance. This rivalry was what turned me from a casual hockey watcher into a die hard Avs fan, so it's always a treat to revisit the glory years of battle. Miss you Wings-bros, we're 3-3 all time in playoff matchups, may we meet in the playoffs one last time to settle the score.
Awesome vid! I was at the March 26th game, still have my stub! What an amazing time to be a Wings fan back then...still get chills watching this old footage
Man, I'm not a fan of either team, and this was still the Greatest Show on Earth from '96 to '02. My sister, who didn't care too much about hockey, would mark her calendar to watch COL/DET games on ESPN. Other people who never paid attention to the sport would ask about this. Absolute insanity.
Ya Avs went to 6 of 7 WCFs. "Only" won the 2 times they won the Cup.But lost game 7 on the road 3 times,(twice had a chance to advance to the Finals at home in game 6,up 3games to 2-but lost)& game 6 the other time. Even when they lost the WCFs-they came very close. And back then-WCFs were usually the defacto Cup Finals (except when NJ won the East). Basically the 2002 WCFs decided the team of that era,& Detroit wins that-they were clearly the better team-but those Avs came 1 win from repeating,as that 2002 WCF was easily the defacto Cup finals. Detroit won 2 of 3 conference final matchups. But Colorado won 3 of 5 playoff series, beating Detroit in 2nd round in 1999,& 2000...2 amazing teams. Ive only closely followed hockey since the Avs were born in 1995-so Im only including teams from 1995 to the present. But 2002 Wings,& 2001 Avs-in that order-are the 2 best teams ive ever seen. (& Im a Colorado fan) And because of the cap that will never change...its not possible to stockpile the talent those teams had,& never will be-as long as there is a cap. Even the best cap era teams-like my 2022 cup champ Avs-dont compare to those teams. 2002 Detroit had like DOUBLE DIGIT HOFers-& a few other guys who have an argument...2001 Colorado had 6 All star game starters...FROM THAT SEASON-not counting mr clutch Chris Drury (yes the NYR gm kids)or 2001 SCF game 7 hero-Alex Tanguay. Or Adam Foote a top 5 deffensive dman at the time. That does include the Kings gm-Rob Blake-a top 3-5 dman in the nhl back then-who we traded for in 2002. Teams today just dont compare. This sums it up in a microcosm. Sergi Federov,& Peter Forsberg both won MVPs,both won scoring titles,& both were arguably the best player on the planet-for a period of multiple years(although Forsbergs MVP came in 2003,just after this era)...yet they both were the undisputed 2cs on their team-not 1c-because of Alltime greats Stevie Y,& Joe Sakic...that sums it up to me. As great as Kadri was on last yrs Avs-probably the 2nd best 2c in the nhl, after Drasaitil,(87pts in 74 games, thats exactly 100pt pace for Kadri)-he wasnt remotely Forsberg or Federov...& I love Kadri.
Excellent Video...This is one of the Reasons Many Fans want Detroit to move Back to The Western Conference Central Division. Switch Detroit with Nashville. Colorado has a Powerhouse Team right now that will most certainly Be Great if not Excellent for another Decade easily, not just the Players they have now but also the Avalanche are 5th in the League of best Prospects. Also, The Colorado Avalanche Won the 21-22" Stanley Cup......>> Detroit Took Notes from the Avalanche Playbook finding talent, the Same way that The Avalanche Took Notes on how The Tampa Bay Lightning built their team. The Detroit Red Wings are Listed as #1 in NHL Prospects. So Much talent is in the Detroit Rebuild. I Wouldn't be Shocked if Detroit makes the playoffs this year. They are just going to get better. Detroit has a Good team Now but they will have a Powerhouse team Next Year and many Years to come. Also, Detroit has other Major Rivalry's in the Central Division. The St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars and even The Winnipeg Jets. Also, All Canadian Teams and Fans Hate Detroit, so, Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and The Calgary Flames.
@@PinholesGraham You got it man, keep it up! The late-90s/early-00s wings avs rivalry gave me some of my favorite childhood memories. I remember watching the Roy statue of liberty goal as it happened. My family was in California for a wedding on the day of game 7 of the WCF in 2002. This was before smartphones so the first thing we did after the ceremony was run to the restaurant across the street and ask what the score was. When they told us it was 7-0 we absolutely thought they were lying 🤣 We eventually saw the score ourselves and it gave us a 2nd reason to celebrate that day. Every single person in Michigan at the time truly and deeply hated the Avs it was a magical time hahaha
It was a toss up between these 2 teams every time they played. Never knew who would win since they were so evenly matched. Then the 2002 red wings showed up and NOBODY was going to beat them.
This is by far one of the best videos I've ever seen covering this rivalry. I grew up in the time of both team's slow decline/rebuilds, though some part of me is desperate that the two can meet in the Stanley Cup Finals some year soon. It may not be the same as the rivalry used to be, but how better to memorialize the best rivalry in recent memory, than by putting it on the stage they physically couldn't be on in the era of their rivalry?
Goddamn. I grew up watching that rivalry. My dearest hockey memories are all attached to this period of hockey history. This video made it justice. Great stuff man.
As excellent and thrilling a rivalry they had, this video is every bit as excellent! This is honestly the best piece of sports journalism I think I have ever seen! Seriously, dude, I was totally reliving that whole era as you perfectly narrated, and the footage and editing, top notch! I would expect to see something like this on ESPN, MSG Network, NESN, etc., but they'd ruin it with commercials or some over production nonsense. This was great. Well done!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
Fantastic video! This rivalry is what made me a die hard hockey and AV's fan. I wasn't really familiar with hockey until the Nordiques moved to CO and became the AV's. This rivalry was literally must watch tv every single time they played. I'll always miss the hatred that once was between these two teams.
It's crazy. Both my dad and step dad were at the game where lemioux hit draper years before they ever met eachother. This rivalry has changed people's lives.
first time i put on skates, around age 4, was during that 96/97 season. first nhl game was that semifinal game 7 at the joe against the avs, later leading to the wings bringing home the cup, and again a year later. today i may not be at all a big hockey guy, but with the season the wings have been having, it's been hard not to want to see what's going to happen next, and if it resulted in some rematches like these with colorado, boy would that be fun to watch! thank you for putting this together, it was a great blast from the past for me
I was watching the night Roy got blown out in Montreal. I was watching the night Draper got hit by Lemieux. I was watching the night of the March massacre. I saw it all back then and it was awesome. I knew when I was watching the Russian 5 I was seeing something special. After the hit on Draper I was livid. I couldn't wait for the next season to start.
Blessed to be an Avs Fan during all this. As your video was winding down I was thinking how great it would be if somebody ended their video of this rivalry with the alumni game, bam... nailed it. Great video. Thank you for making it.
Some people don't understand why I rooted for the avalanche in the cup finals a few years ago. The hatred back then fuels the love now. It's both the wings and Aves history and we all loved it.
11:58 Hand to God, PLEASE bring back this playoff format. Especially if the league really wants to expand to 36 teams (Bleugh), make it six teams per division instead of the old 5 and give the division winner a *real* reward. I need these goofy looking playoff standings back like oxygen.
I am loving these videos man keep up the great work I have watched all of them! Your channel is seriously underrated, as a canucks fan I would love for you to do something about us never winning a cup but our hard fought finals apperiances. Legends like Bure, Linden, Naslund, McLean and the Sedins. Your commentary and writing is impeccable, also the research you put into each video is incredible. The subs and views will come!
As much as I sometimes dont know what team to root for, the proud history of the Red Wings when I was too young to follow them (born near detroit) always makes me come back to them. I WISH I was around for this team's heyday It's like the exact opposite reason I'm a Lions fan at this point.
the greatest shot of Patrick Roy's career was him skating out to help Lemieux against McCarty. I say this as a Wings fan who was not alive for this rivalry but know of it's history.
One of the best rivalries in all of sports. Even to this day, in 2022, I will say "F**K The Red Wings" each time I see someone wearing a Red Wing's jersey. I'm an Avs fan of course. But I don't hold that jersey against them, just a fun thing to say to remind everyone of the great rivalry. Then I always say "sorry, just have to say that" and we make friends. haha
Every time someone covers this topic, it’s not long enough to actually cover the topic. That goes for youtubers, NHL Network, ESPN, everyone. It would take 8 hours at least but it would be worth it. This is the best hockey ever played after all.
Great Video! This was the best rivalry ive ever witnessed in professional sports.. They were already rivals before Claude L illegally checked Draper in the back and broke his face.. Darren McCarty pummeled Claude L for doing that.. The Wings were stacked, this was my favorite era of Detroit Red Wings, Hockeytown..
I was a kid when this stuff was going down. It literally made the NHL come out and say after the brawl at the Joe they’d step in. Which I don’t think I’d heard before that point
This era of hockey i called Body Hockey, where playing with the body was more common, nowadays you see more puck work, which is fun for goals....not so much for everything else. And OMG i almost forgot about the 2 line pass..... EUGH
Never heard it called "Bloody Wednesday before". I've heard it called "D-Day for Red Wing Nation", "The Brawl in Hockeytown", "Fight Night at the Joe", but never "Bloody Wednesday". I'll have to remember that one.
Imagine what the ticket prices were for a Detroit-Colorado game during this time were. You know that the prices were inflated because of how much people would've wanted to see these two live
Even with Pens and Caps, geography plays a gigantic role too, both being in the Metro, and even on the other side of PA, being in a neighboring state to DC.
I will say, as much as it’s not so much a rivalry now, we still don’t like each other that much lol. Imagine we meet in the finals, that would re spark it.
