Laser material is getting more expensive all the time and an easy way to prevent waste it to use a camera in conjunction with Lightburn to enable easy selection of small fragments of material.
In this video I will use the Acmer A500 Lightburn camera and show how to align and calibrate cameras in Lightburn so you can maximize your material usage and eventually pay for your camera.

This is currently only $80 (7/2/24). I recently bought one mainly because it was the cheapest I found and I have an Acmer. Works well!

A camera seems like it would make everything a whole lot easier. Not to mention on the amount of waste you can save. Definitely an add on im going to aim for

As long as you understand that a camera is a guide rather than a deadly-accurate positioning tool, then it's a nice addition.

Thanks for a timely review. If using the flat bed and then going to a honeycomb i'd guess you would have to recalabrate camera. Can you save setting for both ? did note the use of a cardboard target comment so that may be a quick work around. Really do enjoy your well made and present short posts - great
@SteveMakesEverything

It would probably be pretty close regardless, but if you are looking for accuracy then yes, you would probably need to recalibrate

Been looking at one of these but wondering how often you will have to re-calibrate it. When running the laser at high speeds it does create some movements in the body of the laser (and the table). Besides that and if I can fit it in my enclosure I cant find any issues with it, + it is a decent price.

I had it mounted on the B1 for a couple weeks and used it quite a bit without it moving around. If you take a large piece of cardboard a engrave all of the targets on it, the you can just drop it into your laser if you need to quickly calibrate. But definitely locking the laser down in a enclosure is the best way because then nothing will move

Hi Steve, I would like to add a camera to my X1pro. I do a lot of powder coating inlays to my projects once I have cut them. I thought the camera would help me align things up better for the second burn. I use Lightburn to create my content. Will this camera work with the XP1 if I am running Lightburn?
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 8 месяцев назад
It will certainly work because the laser doesn’t really have a bearing on the camera. It is totally controlled by Lightburn. However if you require hyper-accurate positioning then no Lightburn camera is going to work because they just aren’t that accurate. If you need accuracy better than a couple of millimeters then this won’t solve your problem

Following this video I purchase A500 camera which I received today. Unfortunately I cannot get a picture on Lightburn. I installled as USB camera which lightburn shows but no picture and I cannoot calibrate it. Any thoughts please? Windows 11 Lightburn 1.4.03. Tried on 2 PCs.

To being a windows users I can be too much help. I wonder if Windows need a driver installed to enable this camera. Do you see the camera as an available usb device in Lightburn?

I would be curious how it handles an enclosure as well.
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 9 месяцев назад
Well if you enclosure is 42cms from the floor to the roof it will just work. If it is less, you will have scale the image when calibrating. Note that there is no focus on the camera so you won’t be able to be at 20cms or anything too small.
@user-mq4ui6qw5i
@user-mq4ui6qw5i Месяц назад
If it is large enough it's all good. What's more though is you can 3D print (or engrave) a mounting arm for the enclosure.

Hi Steve, How is this connected to LB? Through the laser or directly to the computer? TIA.

Computer---I had trouble keeping mtne aligned, even the smallest bump when olacing material would jar it out of alignment , I finally did build a plywood enclosure, attacheched the camera with zip ties to the top and now it works very well
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 9 месяцев назад
An good question. The answer is direct to the computer over USB. This camera does try to be anything but a camera

HI Steve! I'm sorry, but I need to ask for help again! I have an Acmer A500 Camera that I installed on a TS2-20W machine! My problem is that every time I stop working, I turn off all the machines, and then when I want to use the camera again, I have to reinstall it again! I watched your video and other videos all the way, but I didn't see that you saved the settings! What do you think I'm not doing well? Thanks!
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Месяц назад
When you say "reinstall" are you talking about reinstalling something on your computer or just having to recalibrate in Lightburn? If it's the former, that's a computer or operating system issue and I can't be much help there. If it's a recalibration, that shouldn't happen at all and would indicate that Lightburn possibly can't write the configuration to your computer. There isn't a "save" for camera calibration per se.
@zoltankabodi3377
@zoltankabodi3377 Месяц назад
@@SteveMakesEverything It's the latter! When I start Lightburn, I can see the camera, but I can't see what I want to engrave, only if I put the drawn, numbered squares under it again and mark the points 1,2,3,4 again! After that, I can already see what I want to engrave, I can engrave it, but the camera is no longer accurate!
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Месяц назад
@@zoltankabodi3377 Got it. This is pretty odd. This should have nothing to do with the camera, so either Lightburn isn't saving this information, or the underlying operating system (I assume Windows) is preventing it. You could try to check your computer logs for any write errors after setting this information in Lightburn, but it's a long shot.
@zoltankabodi3377
@zoltankabodi3377 Месяц назад
@@SteveMakesEverything Thanks! I also think that Lightburn doesn't save it, that's why I asked where it should be saved! All my programs are legal, so I don't understand! Everything else works fine on both my machines (I also have two laptops) but the camera doesn't work on either of them! That's why I wouldn't worry that Windows is at fault! I don't think the antivirus (McAffe) can interfere? But then I don't know how to set up Lightburn?
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything Месяц назад
@@zoltankabodi3377 If I get a few minutes I'll take a look at the camera alignment in Lightburn and see if I can reproduce your problem, but I've honestly never seen this happen.
