"The Acolyte" Season Two was in the works? | Actor's Reaction to being Canceled | Rings of Power S2 

Acolyte was clearly written assuming a second season would happen. Which is (another) damnation of the job the writers and showrunner did.

The one good thing that could come from this is that perhaps future show writers will be less arrogant in assuming there will be another season, and instead focus on telling a complete story within the timeframe they are given. No more loose ends that never go anywhere or apparent lore breaks that never get resolved satisfactorily.

I think it’s even more confirmation just how out of touch they are there at LF. They thought they had a hit, they thought it would work for a big audience. They made Star Wars theirs and a large number of previous fans don’t like their version.(what’s great about Star Wars is there is no good verses evil.” That is most definitely their version, not Lucas’s) How are they surprised if they weren’t out of touch?

Lucifer got saved, but by Netflix, a different streamer to the one that originally produced it. Acolyte would not be sold to another streamer to continue the story… and I’m not sure if any would be willing to pick it up

It's funny I'm not a hard core Tolkein fan, but what you said exactly encapsulates (to me) why hard core fans are so upset. "I watched those 3-6 movies...I watched those and I'd like to learn a little bit more about the WORLD OF MIDDLE EARTH" And from my understanding that's what the hardcore fans are screaming from the hilltops, "THAT (the Prime show) IS NOT THE WORLD OF MIDDLE EARTH" Or in other words, IMO, as with we Star Wars fans we're telling the world that these corporations are pirating our beloved IPs. They're creating products, that are not the IP in any shape or form, and slapping the IP label on it. It's the old snake oil salesman routine. Additionally, there's nothing inherently wrong with the product they want to sell, but if you're proud of your product let it stand for itself. Don't name it something it isn't or try to fit it into a setting it does not correlate to.

So this new Rings of Power series is "Fast-food Tolkien?" or "Tolkien Very Very LITE?" It's only going to cheapen the experience of being in Middle-Earth.

Remember when the EU existed and even bad SW media could still exist and just be safely excluded or included in fans own head canon because only George's films were set in stone? KK & Acoshyte fans are so incompetent they dont even consider how this structure would allow their slop to technically still exist and not enrage real SW fans who could then just dismiss it as non-canon.

I saw a video and a guy did the math and if the people that signed the petition pitched in money they would need to donate $7,000 at least if they wanted the same $180 million budget

It's not just about the money, otherwise Andor would've been canceled too. It was just as big a financial loss as Acolyte. There are a lot of politics and perception issues involved.

It's mind-boggling to hear about this because it shows how little those actors and staff know Star Wars. Anyone who knows SW knew this was a dumpster fire after episode one and it only got worse as they continued to shit on the canon.

Lucifer was the show that got saved by fan outcry on social media. As a fan of that show, I was a part of that lol. The difference there was despite initially receiving some backlash from fans of the comic for not being anything like the source material, the show actually ended up being good for what it was and had great actors. Tom Ellis really sold the character, that show was almost worth watching for him alone. It only gained more popularity as the seasons went so the cancellation seemed out of nowhere and the cliffhanger was huge enough to justify at least one more season. And yeah, it probably didn't cost $180 million to make either lol.

If, um, 'Willowing' the show leads to more filmmakers of this ilk not wanting to make Star Wars content, take the W and shoosh.

I’m not a die hard Tolkien fan but l have read most of his works and have great respect for them,IMO Amazon could have avoided any animosity by concentrating on the Blue Wizards and the unknown regions of Middle Earth,that way they have developed original characters and intriguing plot scenarios 🤔

what makes no sense is the first season was greenlight. They knew exactly what they were getting out of it yet. They released it knowing it was an open ended disaster and now they just cancel it making it a complete waste with a whole slew of unanswered questions 🤦

If this didn't have the Star Wars name attached to it, I strongly believe both the opening audience would have been much lower AND the viewer decline would have been a lot steeper. Outside of a couple of good performances (impressive considering what they had to work with) and some decent lightsaber fights (though lessened because I didn't care about the characters nor the result of the fights) this show has nothing to offer narratively and actively takes away from the thing we love.

I literally found myself screaming at the TV watching the final episode. None of it made sense. It was so bad it's laughable. Disney has no idea what it's doing. Get rid of Kathleen Kennedy and we can start to move forward.

A question that has continually revealed itself in my mind from examining the theming and messages of The Acolyte is "Do the writers, particularly Headland genuinely believe acts of wanton murder and revenge are healthy and justified based solely on if the individual wants to commit them?" I don't like to assign character to individuals whom I only know the smallest things about but the messages they've communicated are so self-destructive and asinine that it just doesn't feel like it could come from a healthy individual. Was Disney in the dark about what one of their own shows was spreading to their customer base and could only veto it after the fact, or where they fully aware of The Acolyte was saying and didn't think it was anything that should concern them?

People appearing in shows/movies are walking/talking adverts for themselves, the projects they're in, and future projects. Every time they say something that's designed to alienate audiences - they're alienating future audiences.

I understand the wish that no actor who worked with Acolyte was harmed, but they DO have a responsibility to their own career. If it makes actors hesitate about working with Lukas Films, maybe they should make projects that have broad market appeal.

Disney made the mistake of already putting the money into developing a 2nd season of Andor before seeing how it performed and they weren't going to make they mistake twice. This time they had the good sense to see how their super expensive show performed before ploughing blindly on with another season.

Star Trek Prodigy (S2) was saved by fans. Although it was already made and Paramount simply took the tax write off for it until Netflix bought the series.

The Disney vault used to be for preserving films and building value. Now it’s the Lucasfilm vault to hide the failures that are... literally everything but Mando S1, S2, and Andor S1 (let’s not forget S2 may be another Loki S2). Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Willow, they are so close to having destroyed everything, congratulations!

Rings of Power would have have to be truly special this season for me to come back. I gave the first season a chance, first 2 episodes were good, but I was hate watching it by the end.

They can release the rest of the story, if there are enough interested fans, as a novel or in graphic novel form.

A petition with only 40k signatures is not going to change Disney's decision. The petition to remake S8 of GoT has nearly 2 million signatures. The Twin Suns Foundation raised money and rented two bill boards near LucasFilm HQ in San Francisco to try and get them to continue the EU and that wasn't enough either. The fact is not enough people watched or finished The Acolyte and with it's insane budget it had to rate in S1, if the show had had a much lower budget a S2 might have gone ahead as the show found it's legs.

It's an incentive to do your job well. Residuals are akin to a commission for making something or selling something that makes good profits. That's a literal fiscal incentive to do well at your job. That should be the barrier to entry for lower tier writers/directors/actors.

Even if there was a soft greenlight on a season 2, I guess that is a normal procedure. Felicity Jones had a contract for 1+1 movie. But then they decided to kill her of. So they probably had that in the contract with the Acolyte as well. If it goes well you get a second season. But here they killed of the whole story

I have been watching the mandalorian over the last week or so... having watched the Acolyte a few weeks ago and it has to be said the AI generated sock-puppet has 100 times the emotional range that Ms Stenberg displays in her performances... That being said I'm sure that you would start to lay the foundation for another season.. I'm not in that line of work, but I have a role that has timed contracts for the projects and perhaps 20-30% of the work that you do is dedicated to your follow up bid, with a large percentage of the projects not being renewed.

The problem that both sides of this argument face now is that they both loose. The side that wanted this show to continue loose because it is canceled. The side that wanted good story telling and to keep the spirit of Star Wars going loose because there is STILL no good Star Wars being made, not since 1983. It has been dead for 40 years. We have all lost something and the lack of care and respect "went out the window" the moment the last of the trilogy stopped showing in the early 80's. The franchise was never as good as it was then, and we are lying to ourselves if we say otherwise.

My brother has been watching the first season of ROP and I’ve rewatched some episodes, and there’s elements that are very interesting, and entertaining, but there’s a shallowness in the writing that makes some (not all) of the plot points feel convoluted. Also, I realized so much of the hype was around guessing who Sauron was. That reveal was cool, but also out of nowhere. My biggest gripe is the titular event of the series, forging the rings of power, was tacked on to the end. It was rushed and didn’t have the set up nor the weight it should have had. Not the worst thing ever, but it failed to achieve greatness imo.

Really stupid when they release episodes at once because then the season will be shorter

I'm with Naboo on this. I had a lot of problems with both Willow and The Acolyte, but as a creative person myself who is becoming increasingly more disgusted with the way rich execs can screw over actors, writers, etc. with almost no consequences (it's like they've all forgotten the strikes happened already), it is completely unfair to rob people of residuals by deleting a show off a streaming platform just to cover their own asses. I do not care if the show sucks. What we have to remember is that a lot of the people who collect paychecks on these projects are not big names - they're people like background actors who don't make very much to begin with and are trying to scrape by with every job they get. I don't know what their contracts are or if the erasure of these shows from Disney+ affects their ability to make money, but if said erasure is in fact detrimental to them financially, then Disney imo is in the wrong. Those people especially should not be punished for the mistakes of a few. Canceling a show is fine. Erasing it from existence and keeping people (who did not bear responsibility for a show's failure) from making a living is not

Amandla did play the power of two characters but the power of Maany was another dude. I personally think she played the sisters exactly the same. It was only the clothes that seperated them. Well and the length of the hair until that stupid hair-cuting scene. The biggest problem is that you can't really judge or criticise a series or movie today. If found don't love it, you're a hater. If you say that the story didn't always make sense, you just hate everyone involved and become an -ist or several. That's why it's so good ro hear your honest judgement on everything they do

For a better Rings of Power, - scratch Gandalf, Hobbits, Southlands completely - shorten Galadriels story arc. - focus alot more on Eregion, no silly elves, speaking in clichees. The might and arrogance of the Noldor. Celebrimbor should be a mini-Feanor, skill, intelligence, arrogance, not some goofy santa clause. - make the Numenor arc more interesting. No silly public speaking scenes, but tell the actual story. Tell it dont spell it. Numenor should be a mysterious place of dark secrets and hidden powers. Not an angry street mob, arguing that "Elves" stole their jobs.

People always forget or don’t know the real reason Amandla made that “music” video. It had nothing to do with the Acolyte. It was about the backlash and harassment she was getting from a resurfaced clip, taken from an interview she did in 2018 about the film The Hate U Give. People were calling her racist for saying the goal of the film was to make “white people cry”. While I don’t think her intention was racist and was meant as a joke it really didn’t come across well. Still that “music” video and “song” didn’t help her case at all and only made her look worse. She should have simply made an apology and said she didn’t mean for it to be racist, unfortunately her ego wouldn’t allow it.

I was sure there would be a second season, not because the show was good, but because Lucasfilm has been doubling down on garbage for several years now!

Westworld was Willowed right after S4 came out (and that season was 10x better than S3), so you can never see that show again and it had 1 of the greatest seasons of TV. And yall mentioning shows being brought back after cancelation, Family Guy, Futurama, The Expanse, and Brookline Nine Nine were brought back from cancelation over the years.

The only TV show I am aware of that was saved by a letter-writing campaign is Star Trek. After an intense campaign, and it had never been announced that Star Trek would even be cancelled but rumors abounded, NBC made an on-air announcement at the end of Season 2 that there would indeed be a Season 3.
