This was a good review. Too many channels recount the two episodes scene by scene, going on and on about what happened minute by minute. We all watched the show. We know what happened. I like that you covered the key plot moments, provided insight into each, and gave your thoughts and opinions. Good content. I'll be checking out your reviews for the rest of this season!

@@StarWarsExplained I get that the Prequel Jedi are a far cry from how they are in the High Republic and this left them an easier target to the Sith, but it can kind of get tiring constantly hearing the flaws of Prequel Jedi and of the Galactic Republic in that era. The golden age may be gone, but I wouldn’t say they have a failing society. Heck, I like to see a story where the Jedi and their allies unintentionally foil the plans of the Sith by defeating their public proxies who are on a mission. Granted, such a failure would not stop the rise of the Sith, but it would be nice to know they could be hurt. I mean, Palpatine and Dooku were kind of panicking in Season 6 of the Clone Wars when the Jedi got close to uncovering the truth of the Clone Troopers. It also would be nice if inside-of-the-box thinking and following the rules wasn’t always showed as a flaw. We’ve got plenty of stories showing the horrors of blind obedience and that not being normal can be a strength, but it can make being a normal boring person feel wrong.
@var67

One thing I missed hearing about was the moment when Qimir realised it was Osha and doesn't seem surprised or angry, instead he leans in and almost whispers to let her know he knows, and yes, sounds to me like he clearly understands it's a setup. As someone else said in the comments: he knows more about the situation than his supposed partner Mae who WAS surprised that Osha was still alive. Definitely more intrigue to come from him.

I think Meknek is a specific job title. A Mechanic works on all sorts of things, Ram Jomaram and Anakin are Mechanic Hobbyists. Mekneks seem to specifically go out on to the ships exterior(which is apparently a big nono based on Dialogue and the Trade Feds seemed like they'd be more than happy to let Mekneks die out there). Sorta like how a Droid Smith is arguably just a droid mechanic, and Shipyards and Speeder shops employ normal on the ground mechanics, Mekneks specialize in space walk repairs.

@@ryangass8268 Yes, it's the ilicit nature of the work that makes her a "meknek." She's sticking her neck out so to speak, doing a job that has legally been relegated to droids, presumably because it's cheaper. There is an unsavory connotation to the word. If she says, "I'm a mechanic," that's a respectable occupation.

I think the fact that Mae has to kill a Jedi without a weapon is indicative of some form of trial/test of strength for the Sith Acolyte/Apprentice. Similar to how Qui-Gonn's death was a test for Darth Maul and Dooku's death was Anakin's test; but in a more ritualistic sense. Notice how she lunges for the Jedi's lightsabers each time shes taken on one of the Masters in combat. I think the final test will be killing a Jedi with their own lightsaber.

@TonyCT7567
@TonyCT7567 3 месяца назад
Yeah it definitely feels like a Sith initiation thing to kill 3 Jedi without a weapon. I feel like she’s going to take her last victim’s lightsaber and try to bleed the crystal as her final test. I also don’t think Mae is making it out alive. I think the “master” is really the Sith apprentice trying to train his own apprentice in secret to overthrow his master (possibly Plagueis it Tenebrous). I theorize that the true Sith Lord will become aware of all of this and kill the Acolytes.
@shakeelali20
@shakeelali20 3 месяца назад
@@Exxperiment626 I remember reading somewhere that the crystal a Sith takes has to be from a living Jedi. I'm not sure if that's canon, but it would fit nicely as a sort of coup de gracè. Kill the Jedi with their own blade and the crystal should shift allegiance. Then bleed it to make her Sith lightsaber. Either way I'm willing to give the show a chance because there's definitely some good mixed in there with the bad.

I went in with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised by the story and cinematography time and time again. My favorite scene has to be where Osha follows young Mei in her vision, then we see Osha as a young child too. The part where Mei saw Osha was also very emotional, and surprised me yet again with the fact that both sisters thought their twin was dead. I wonder where they’re going to take this, since it seems like Mei gave up everything to avenge Osha. Still going in with an open mind, no crazy expectations

I think everyone involved is going to die so the Sith can keep their cover-up. It makes the Sith really terrifying as no one knows who is a Sith accomplice or not since they are their fingers in almost every political, economic, and corporate side of the Galaxy.
@jwinnfield9192
@jwinnfield9192 3 месяца назад
Truly having an open mind is taking it on face value as fact and is a representation of the facts as they happen. Real life would suck even more than it already does if you were to question and criticise everything that happens in your life such as not thinking the Amazon delivery driver would actually deliver your order to you in the way he did, saying what he did and so on. Imagine going online to complain that the Amazon guy had bad dialogue (mostly that would be the case). We don’t question it because it just happened, that’s that. Basically I think you get more out of fantasy fiction when you observe it like you would a documentary perhaps. The overriding feeling is not to get mad about how you would have done it differently, sure you might think that but you are learning the facts of what did actually happen. This approach lessens the effect of keeping yourself and everyone you corrupt out of the story. I just kind of dislike how everyone treats fiction these days. It’s supposed to be entertaining, engaging and a chance to dip into a more interesting and exciting life than we might live through. The enjoyment is sucked out of it when we constantly directly criticise writers and directors. Having said all that it is of paramount importance that the story is evolutionary connected and maintained. The sequels were a different beast, little or no understanding of what came before, inaccurate representations of already established characters and organisations. I can buy into this series so far as a history documentary. Not having a go at you personally with your comment. I agree to be honest, just annoyed that so many people have a bad attitude about consuming fiction these days. I remember a better time.

Exactly! The reason many (former) Star Wars fans have crossed into "hate monger" territory is because they went into something (movie, series, whichever) with a stack of expectations that the content didn't adhere to, and they went to the Dark Side because of it. The only thing I can't figure out is why they keep watching and complaining if they hate it so much. If you don't like it, that's fine.... but move on. Personally, I haven't read any of the books or comic from the High Republic era, and I learned a long time ago to simply watch what is being offered, follow along with the story and characters, and THEN decide if I like it or not. So far, I haven't been outright disappointed since The Last Jedi... and I'll only take 1/2 credit for that (the other half belongs to the writer/director/editor) because they went out of their way to subvert expectations. Enough of that, though. So far with this series, and I realize we're only 2 episodes in, but I'm fully invested in the story and the characters. Some have stated that some of the dialogue was repetitive and "heavy handed" about it.... but at the start, I'm okay with it. I think it should lighten up as the series goes along.

If something is bad, ignore it like an ostrich sticking their head in the sand. It eventually all started to feel very disingenuous, because even when some things deserved strong criticism all anyone would say was "I liked it!". I feel like this channel could cover the Star Wars Holiday Special and still unironically give it a 6/10 after "watching it with an open mind", because negativity is frowned upon here.

i LOVE the characterization of Vernestra Rwoh here. how is the order supposed to change to become more insular and dogmatic if its elders havent? doing that with a beloved character who has been built up quite a bit is especially rewarding because that change is codified in an individual instead of having a random elder jedi spacegoat to point at. its risky for sure because that change hasnt been illustrated gradually but i think its so worth it. especially with a prodigy who has been a jedi master for so long. thats exactly the kind of person who has gotten used to trusting themselves and would eventually become subtley complacent

Yord is a complete tool. A hot tool maybe, but still a tool. Vernestra feels so different from her book days but that feels deliberate. I also appreciate how the mystery of Osha and Mae has been messed with, making this less of a who question and more of a why and how, bringing to mind the likes of Columbo.

I get the difference between book and show Vernestra.. but then again it's been a century since the book setting. It does appear that there is a master manipulator at work. Osha is getting her visions some how, when Mae had no clue that Osha was still alive. It seems they are being brought together as they will be stronger as a pair. Reminiscent of Palps puppet mastering in the sequel trilogy. Interesting to see where the twin thing goes, is it going to be the classic light and dark balance again. I hope it’s not a case similar to when Luke thought he should kill off Ben Solo.

FWIW "MechNeck/Meknek" seems to be a alluding to "roughnecks" a pejorative term for oil riggers specifically and tough working-class brutes generally who do dangerous work. So far at least in this show, the High Republic era isn't shown to have many droids with dexterity like we see later in the franchise so it seems like Osha's work is similar to that of what the astromechs will do later on.

As someone who vehemently avoids any trailers or discussions of things I haven't seen yet, I was actually a bit confused about the Osha Twin thing. I first thought that being a mechanic is her cover and her seeking revenge might be built up as something just or at the very least morally grey, but I didn't figure out that there were twins until it was said. After some time, I figured that Osha was innocent but thought that someone was framing her to lure out the other Jedi, but well... that was wrong. But it is important to keep in mind that I was very high when watching the episodes, so my inability to identify the twin thing might be because of that.

People don't like the agenda driven casting, directing and show runner. This show never had any chance to be judged on merit and everyone involved knew that when they developed it. Disney wanted more representation in their big budget content, and a larger segment of the fans, don't like when you ignore the target audience in favor of a cause.

I was pleasantly surprised by the first two episodes. It's not the best thing ever, but FAR from the worst of Star Wars. I like it better than Ahsoka so far. Problem with all these reviews trying to drag everything into the "culture war" is that it becomes a field of noise that cancels out (ironically) any possibility for objective criticism. Some of the transitions in the show could be better and there's too many different locations for my liking. But the acting so far is likeable and I don't feel like any "message" is being pushed at all. It's just showing a reality of a diverse galactic community with the Jedi being mostly paralysed by indecision and strict rules. Getting a bit of KOTOR2 vibes from it even.
@thewatcher7940
@thewatcher7940 3 месяца назад
Stories that don't have any sort of message are bad stories. Good stories say something important about the real world. People who complain about the "messages" in stories aren't really upset about stories having any message at all. They just want every story's message to agree with their own values. They don't want their beliefs challenged. Which is ironic, since Star Wars has NEVER aligned with these peoples' values. They were just either too young or too stupid when they watched the Originals or Prequels to understand this.

And that makes me more excited just because they are so obsessed with hating for hate sake.

Much as I enjoyed the first episode, I found the prison ship sequence unnecessary. It would have been more efficient for the two Jedi to have taken Osha on their ship rather than arrange for a prisoner transport to take her away. I think the showrunners did it in order to bring Osha to Carlac so that Master Sol had to seek her out. I found it hard to believe the Jedi had recaptured the other prisoners so fast. These criminals must not have been the brightest bulbs.

6:12 I wonder if those sorts of traits are meant to indicate that he doesn't yet feel comfortable as a Jedi Knight (I think he mentions in the episode that he was Knighted only 2 years before the timeframe of the series, so maybe he didn't feel ready for his Jedi Trials while his Master did) and he's strictly adhering to how Jedi Knights are expected to present themselves to find meaning with where he is in his life as a Jedi. 12:41 Also even though it's under completely different contexts, the presentation of the Jedi Master's Force Wall at the start of Episode 2 reminded me of a Jedi character I came up with years ago that was baseline or weaker than average for most Force Powers but had a natural affinity for Force Shields and was basically invincible unless caught unaware.

I noticed in two of the fights Mae tries to grab her opponents lightsaber off their belt. Maybe it’s just to disarm them or it could be that she intends to kill them with their own weapon. Maybe that somehow counts as “not killing them with a weapon” especially since The Master ignites his lightsaber right after saying acolytes kill without a weapon. There’s also a chance that taking their weapon during combat is a right of passage for her, similar to the way Palpatine made Darth Vader obtain a new kyber crystal to build his red lightsaber by killing a Jedi and taking his crystal to corrupt it. Although when Mae kills Indara she leaves her lightsaber on the ground, so maybe she has to take it during the fight or has to kill them without a weapon to earn it or maybe I’m just reading too far into it. But the camera definitely focused on each of those moments so it’s clearly meant to be important.

I agree with you I am glad they did not dwell on Ohea being the murderer, the quick reveal that she had a twin that did not die was good. Very curious on what the Jedi did wrong and why they are covering it up, plus who this Sith Master is. Loving the different characters. Love the Ohea's little droid Pip. While I am intrigued and like the show so far, there is something just a bit off for me about it that I can't quite put my finger on. It's something about the look/feel of the show, I'm not sure if it's the way that it's shot, edited, idk, but just something a little "different". It's not going to prevent me from engaging with the story and characters, which so far are decent to good, but it is noticeable. This is just a me personal subjective taste thing though probably, but whatever it is the best way I can describe it is that this "feels" more like "TV" to me somehow. At some point during episode 1 I had the thought that this feels like Star Trek, which isn't meant as a negative critique necessarily, just something that might take getting used to.
