I have to ask the question: without the cutaway I feel like I have less access to notes. I mean, how do you get those high notes without the cutaway? I want access to all the notes, not just the ones that "look pretty." Is there any audible difference between a cutaway's sound and a full guitar?
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 6 лет назад
That's the trade off. You don't get as much note access, but having a full body acoustic actually adds a bit of volume and in my opinion a fuller tone.

Model you can recommend for those of us that have short fingers/small hands?

Check out some 12 fret guitars maybe. Really anything with a smaller 'nut width' should be better suited for you, but nothing beats trying them in person.

Have you considered a neck reset? Sounds like the Martin is a superb candidate for that. The shrinking of the wood and the belly swelling usually occurs around 15 to 20 years after its made
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 8 лет назад
Nobody I've taken it to has recommended that yet. Honestly I know next to nothing about actually repairing guitars, I'll have to ask about that. Thanks for the heads up.
@everythingbobbywolfe

+Sean Daniel no problem, Sean. Usually when it seems that the saddle cannot be sanded down any lower and the action gets higher, that's usually the indication that the neck angle has dipped downward usually happening to a great number of older acoustics. Taylor's make the process easy with there bolt on necks. Others are an issue. Unfortunately that old Martin may run you at least $450 to have it done. They; however, have been know to work with customers in the past at a great discount. Try Martin, wouldn't hurt especially considering you've got some youtube cache :)

Sean Daniel yea, I have guitars like that too. The sound of it was awesome in comparison. The resonance was superb and the sound reflection was out standing. Are there other issues with it?
@peterzuehlke

sounded really good, sort of scooped mids. a set-up might not be enough. you might need to pull the frets off and really work on that neck to get the action down. sometimes they get bumps. (hopefully not a twist)

Love your channel. I'm learning with an old-ish Seagull that my dad left when he passed. (And I bought a campfire Baby Martin, too.) Anyway, when you're playing your acoustic, with steel strings, do you usually play with a pick? What if you have to switch between finger picking and strumming? Again, thanks for doing this. Good stuff.
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 8 лет назад
Thanks for reaching out Jeremy! You know it really depends on the song but I'll switch back and forth between fingerstyle and a pick, but I usually don't switch during a song, whereas a lot of people can kind of tuck their pick into their hand and grab it when they need to, but I've never really been into that.

This video made for a very pleasant Sunday evenings viewing Squire!! My acoustic is a modest Fender DG-60CE in black, with 0.10 - 0.42 Ernie Ball strings ... only cost me £190, but it works OK and sounds very nice.

@chrisriddell9926

So, what is the advantage of having no cutaway? I always always thought it was better because it allows you to reach the higher frets.
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 8 лет назад
Well the reason I see it as an 'advantage' is because there's more wood to it and it technically has more mass than one with that corner cut out. So even though it's maybe only 10% more mass/wood and the shape is slightly different, all that stuff has an effect on the sound of the instrument. So to me personally, I'm ok with compromising access to higher frets that maybe I wouldn't use anyway because of my preferred acoustic-playing style. But by no means does that mean having a cutaway makes a guitar any better or worse, it's just finding the right one for you.

Sean, for years I had two Collings guitars a D2HA and an OM2HAC. They sound great but I just got tired of dealing with the extreme changes in humidity. Plus I also like to keep a guitar in my car and like to take it camping. I finally switched to Rainsong guitars. I now have three Rainsong steel strings and a nylon string. With all of the improvements to carbon fiber, especially the unidirectional sound board in their concert series guitars the sound is wonderful. Almost zero maintenance and they never go out of tune.

Oh that's awesome I've actually played one of those. I love how the finish looks. I would say my action is probably medium to medium-high. I know a lot of guys how have it set low but I can't handle the buzzing even if it's easier on my hands.

Would you ever get a round back? I started on electric but would love to pick an acoustic at some point. But because to the slim build of electrics, I can't stand the bulkiness of most acoustics. My friend had a round back and it sits more comfortably on me. So if you wouldn't, why not?
@seandaniel23

I have nothing against roundbacks. Personally I feel the bigger ones fit fine on me, but to each their own. There's no reason not to get one if it's comfortable.

The thing with acourstic guitars is that there aren't many vintage ones that are in playable condition.Acoustic guitars have a much more limited lifespan than electircs, just because of their nature. Due to string tension, the bridge raises and the bit where the fretboard comes over the body sinks over time, and you end up with very high action, like you mentioned in this video.At that point, once you've shaved the saddle to the bare minimum, the only option you have left for a repair is a neck reset (taking the neck off and gluing it back on at an angle)
