Thanks for coming to Alabama Linus! Dang good job explaining the computer.... especially the power systems and the heat management system. I had honestly never thought about these for the Saturn V. If your computer doesn't have hand-woven memory made from the finest copper and iron what are you even doing with your life
@sasjadevries
@sasjadevries 5 лет назад
Wrong. Why think like this: "if your computer doesn't have..." It's not a matter what you have, but who you are and what YOU can do yourself. A rich idiot is still an idiot. And here is the catch: a rich idiot can lose all his money easily, but it takes skill to become wealthy, to stay wealthy and to know what to do. I'd rather talk to someone who doesn't have fancy things but instead know what he's talking about. Talking to someone who knows how a Lamborgini works on the inside is way cooler that talking to someone who has 5 Lamborginis in his yard and doesn't know what a piston-ring is. Owning a 9900K is not cool, you haven't build that CPU, your parents bought it for you. That's the right sort of thinking.

And it was still being used on commercial aircraft navigation systems into the '90s, at least. The descendant of that system was used on lots of 747's. One of the advantages was that the magnetic core memory wasn't subject to cosmic rays flipping a random bit & causing a parity error. Some of the latter models of the same units had solid state RAM, that this occasionally happened with.

A rocket scientist gets ahold of a rocket scientist who rocket scienced when rocket science wasn't as easy
@EgonFreeman
@EgonFreeman 3 года назад
Well, yes and no... Rocket science was _kinda easier_ back then than it is now. It was possible to do less (for instance, you _had to_ get people there -- computers wouldn't have been good enough for the mission), and the tolerances weren't as tight as they are today. Everything advanced from there, and while it was a huge achievement back then -- they wouldn't have been able to construct and send _a robot_ to Mars, for example... and in truth, they wouldn't even have been anywhere close such a goal.
@lucaskp16
@lucaskp16 Год назад
I mean there was also the part of this being very well funded and speed matter more than failure chance since it was a race. so it was accepted the thing my fail and still launched. today they tested the Webbs space telescope for years before launch. kinda the same way spacex made fast progress with its rockets by blowing a lot of them. the problems that those can blow up and once take no lives and a few dozen million dollars of private money (even if its public money by given contracts in reality).

Yes, it's still hard to believe there are people that deny it. One of my grandfathers worked at NASA as a telemetry/telecom hardware engineer in Huntsville during the Saturn, Skylab, and other projects. If you want water vapor in your system yes It would be fun tho to have low pressure closed loops in cooling so that we can have gas instead of liquids depending on the temperature (kinda what's happening in some heatsinks if I remember correctly). It would be fluid cooling

Heh heh heh... you missed the bit about how the stable platform confirmed its own orientation before launch, as in an optical window out of the ISU to a geodetic marker about 400m from 39A with a light source. As the V wobbled and wobbled as wind buffeted, fuel got loaded etc. the stable platform used analogue optical feedback to reset the stable platform to about T-5. Bloody brilliant!

There's a computer museum in Cockeysville, MD, called System Source (they're a computer solutions company, but they also have a museum on-site). We had a field trip there, and passed around a film canister with the iron ring memory bits. One of my students dropped it, and they went everywhere. Good times. They have nearly every major computer system and calculation device represented in their museum.
