The Acura Legend Is Just That, a Legend

Who doesn't love the Acura Legend, am I right? The Legend was a great starting point for Acura and broke them into the North American market. Without this car, who knows where Acura would be these days.
I recently reached out to Scotty Kilmer to participate in his Show Off Sunday contest and I won! This is inspiring me to spin up my own RU-vid channel since I have a great interest in the automotive world and it seems like people really enjoyed what I put together.
This video will stay to act as a thanks to Scotty and, let's be honest, I don't have anything else to put up. Either way, thanks everyone!
Check out Scotty: / scottykilmer

The first gen Legend coupe is soooo underrated. Everyone sings the praises of the second gen, but this one's styling and execution in my opinion was the best! Love how these look from the rear.
@Altek1

I completely agree. I like the second gen for sure but the original style is my all time fav. I heard they're releasing a Honda Legend in Japan again. I saw a side profile and all I'll say is, it's no Legend. I sure hope they do it justice. Always nice to hear from a fellow Legend fan though!

My all time favorite car. I bought my first one in the same color as yours, right off the showroom floor, in late ‘89-‘90 for approx $30k. Kept it 4 years, 130k miles. Bought my second 1990, in the same color around 1994 and also kept it 4 years to just over 138k miles. During the same period, I bought 2 more, (low mileage red and white), for employees to drive- yes, I owned 4 Legend Coupes in the 1990’s and loved every minute of owning them. When Lexus came out with their first RX SUV in ‘98, I transitioned to a Lexus and am still with them. I always look at the new Acura’s hoping for a design to rival the Legend Coupe. They have never produced a car that even remotely appealed to me in all these years. Thanks for this video! Beautiful Legends! ❤️

You have good taste! Wow, not only did you own 4, it seems like you put each one of them to good use. That's a lot of miles for a short period of time. Both generations we're such comfortable cars and with class that seemed almost effortless for the time. My father had a 2004 TL and that car I did like. The recent TLX A-Spec definitely catches my eye these days but nothing like the earlier models. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, it's much appreciated!

This was my first car when I turned 16 in 2003. It was my grandmothers old car and she had taken very good care of it. It was dark green and had factory tint on the side windows. It was an LS. All leather interior. My only gripe was the lack of a CD player at the time. It was a perfect first car for me to learn to drive on. I’ll never forget it!

Back In 1990, Walking In the Acura Dealer Lot, The Legend Coupe LS Automatic new was $31K, only 1 Manual LS was $30K, But 1989 BMW 635ci was near $48K, Mercedes Benz 300CE 1990 $62K or 2 Legend Coupes.

I found the window sticker and it showed the price at 34k with options, kinda shocked to see that when you pay $3200 to pick it up 28 years later. Best car I've ever owned and such a joy to drive. The steering is so butter smooth and nobody gets what I'm talking about until they drive it. I kinda want the four door now, I was never a big fan of it, but I feel like I have to say I owned one in my life.

Very nicely done video. I have always favored the looks of the 1st generation Legends, especially when it came to the coupes. Though the beige color like yours is very fitting for this model, I particularly liked them in red. I was actually scanning the market for one of these not that long ago. It's quite the challenge these days trying to find a clean one with the 5-speed. By the way, back in 1986 a good friend of mine was the first person that I knew to buy an Acura. His was a 2 door hatchback 5-speed Integra in the light blue metallic color over a blue interior. I seem to recall diagonal stripes on the cloth seats?

Thanks so much! I'm looking to dump some money into it this summer to really finalize some small blemishes and mechanical details. All minor but I'd really like the car to be perfect overall. I just had the AC converted to r134 but the compressor doesn't always want to kick on. When it does, it's ice cold and is a great summer car. As for the wipers, I have to imagine it's specifically to raise the blades during the winter. Are the Accord's blades tucked under the hood? Because on the Legend they are and it makes it impossible to raise them without stopping them half way. Thanks for watching by the way, much appreciated.

@Altek1
@Altek1 Год назад
Maybe it was the red color, hah. The one I had in red had a wicked valve tap but it kept running and wasn't the reason it died. The other tapping sound I've heard is caused by the ABS and only happens once when initially moving. Until it happens all the time and ABS randomly comes on during normal braking, now that's scary.

@Altek1
@Altek1 5 лет назад
The primary parts that failed were the master brake cylinder, ball joints on the rear end, and the automatic shift cable started to tighten up, on my original legend I replaced it since getting it into gear was not easy, on the most recent automatic one I just toughed it out. The ABS system will go since all three did the same thing, for that I just pulled the fuses to not bother with it. Gaskets which is common but the oil pump gasket was the big culprit. I have another Legend video where I explain the old one a bit better, check it out if you want... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J7V3hbyG0Wo.html Shoot me any other questions if you'd like.

Alex: Nice video and presentation. I own an '87 legend coupe and a '90 gold like yours. Both have 70k on the odometer. The one thing that I love about these cars is the Visibility. You can see for miles in all directions out of the car without obstruction.....a feature that is hard to find on today's models. Even though I have low mileage i have run into 2 problems on these. 1) The AC will only blow cold air for a couple of minutes on the '87 and then blows hot which is a big problem here in Arizona so I use it for my "winter car." The '87 ABS went out, it was making a noisy clicking sound and finally I just pulled the ABS "module" from the circuit board to circumvent the problem. The '90 ABS is just starting to make a similar sound and flash the ABS light on the panel. Have you run into any of these problems with your vehicles? I would love to be able to repair the AC and ABS in order to keep driving these cars but Its hard to find anyone that knows how to fix them or where to get parts. Appreciate if you have any guidance for me. Best Regards, Tim in Arizona
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 лет назад
Hey Tim, glad you enjoyed the video. 70k on those is incredibly low mileage, consider them the last two cars you'll ever need. The AC needs R12 which is a refrigerant that is no longer legal to sell or carry in the US. If you can find some, you can give it a recharge and see if it kicks on. Your better bet might be to convert it to R134 which is what modern vehicles use. Not entirely sure what that entails. There still could be a leak somewhere in the system so that would be your next troubleshooting step if it doesn't work from there. Only one of my Acura's has working AC, the other lost the belt and even when it had it, the compressor never kicked on. As for abs, it's a common issue with these cars. I've heard that noise when first driving on all three of my Acura's so far. Short of replacing the components, I'm not sure of a way to fix it. I just pulled the fuses since in one case, the abs activated under normal braking and sent me right through a red light. Better safe than sorry but I consider the car to be very drivable even with these two issues. Hope this helps!!

I share your admiration for these cars. I have the exact same LS Coupe in Phoenix red, but my seats look like they've been sitting out in the sun since the dawn of time, then put in a wood chipper. Are your seats original, or did you re-upholster, and if so, do you have recommendations? Thanks, and awesome video!
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 лет назад
Hah that's a great way to put it because my other legend has the same type of seats. The used car lot in New Jersey had reupholstered the seats before I picked it up. They did an amazing job. If you're near that area, I can try to find the place that did it and let you know.
@timbertown.vintage
@timbertown.vintage 6 лет назад
Thanks, but I'm on the west coast in Oregon. Maybe one day I will bite the bullet and have some new plush leather in her. Hard to justify when the reupholstery cost is more than the car was, ha!
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 лет назад
That's exactly how I feel, if I spent $500 to redo the leather and then it broke down, I'd be very upset in a super nice seat.

Altek also, if you have a lead on any origins Bose audio equipment for your cars, I'd love to go back to stock in my LS. I can find the HU, but need the amplified speakers to go along with it. Thanks!
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 лет назад
That's a tricky one. I haven't seen any amplifiers for sale anywhere, I only know where to send them to have them repaired. I found my replacement HU at a junk yard online, I can't recall which one. The good thing is you'll only need the amplifier since a basic 6x9 speaker pairs with it. I'll glance around online and see if I come across anything for you.

@@Altek1 Thanks for the response! I have an 89 black LS automatic, 141k miles. I couldn't find a 5 speed but Im enjoying it. I really enjoyed your other videos too, A gen 2 integra might have to be next on my list lol! looking forward to your next video.
@Altek1
@Altek1 2 года назад
You really don't see any in black anymore, if you get that shining right, it'll be a real looker. 141k can be a low amount of miles depending on how it was maintained. Even poorly maintained examples lasted me until about 190k. And the manual ones are rare now so scoop what you can get, that's why I jumped on mine when I found it. Find a mechanic that knows about those motors. There's a lot of vacuum lines and they're tricky to diagnose if unfamiliar. The main thing is the timing belt since the rest of the motor is pretty bulletproof, even if you know it was changed, they may have not done the tensioner and that's how I lost my previous one. Glad you dig my Integra too! It's a fun little car to bounce around it. I'd love to find an old Prelude to finish my collection off. Love those old school styles!

Anil I figured you were looking at that one, I was actually checking out that first link yesterday. That one looks like it's in good shape minus that shoddy intake, I didn't realize the accident until you pointed it out. I would double check to make sure the weld points under the hood and in the trunk area look good, maybe you can get an idea of what kind of accident it was in. Other than clothe interior, I'd consider that one. The other link is a sedan, not a huge fan of that style, you're right, not as cool. Also, over 200k, they're great engines, but I wouldn't want one that far along unless it was my only option.

hmm i don't know fahrenheit but it goes to about - 18 Celcius plus wind chill...I'm also on one of the great lakes which helps regulate temperatures; dudes w/o a lake get it even worse:( I have a question for you Altek. Seeing as the Legend is made by Honda, are Honda parts interchangable with the Legend? I want a luxury car that has rather inexpensive parts when repairs come along...
@Altek1
@Altek1 6 лет назад
Yeah, that temp is pretty on point with what we see, still, heated seats would be a welcomed addition When it comes to repairs, I find that some parts are interchangeable with a v6 Honda Accord of the roughly the same years so there easy to find but not many parts. For instance, I needed a shift cable and it was a bit tricky to find. The ignition switch was easy to find for a manual but tough to find for the auto. Gaskets and such are easy, even local Acura dealers had some things on hand. The engine mounts were at AutoZone, so again, sometimes it's a trip to the local store and sometimes it's a couple of hours of online searching.

The Legend came out in 1986 in the US so you’re a bit off the mark implying it was new in the 90’s. I bought a 1986 Acura Integra and had a 5 speed manual 1986 Legend as a service loaner. A co worker had a new BMW 5 series and we went out to play at lunch. The Legend nicely embarrassed the much more expensive BMW. Other automakers bought Legends, took them apart, and claimed Honda couldn’t possibly be making money as they were so exquisitely engineered to such impossibly high standards for the price. It’s a shame Honda and Acura have lost their leadership and, for at least the last decade, have been turning out some of the most ugly cars in the world with only Toyota producing even more hideous designs.
