According to Ted Cassidy's son, the first person selected to play the part of Lurch was Abe Vigoda. Also, the character was supposed to be hunched over (hence the name "Lurch") and he wasn't supposed to have any speaking lines. But when he read for the part, and Gomez pulled the rope to summon him, he appeared and, in the awkward silence, ad-libbed his now famous, "You rang?". Everyone cracked up and it was this that won him the part.

I saw Ted Cassidy in an episode of Mannix, I think it was, he played a bit of a neighborhood menace/murder suspect, but ultimately turned out to be a sort of good guy. It must take an awful lot of love of acting for those folks who aren't leading men or ladies, but instead become " character " actors. Because of his height, Ted Cassidy wound up getting many roles as menacing bad guys. As someone 6 foot 4, I often think people associate my height with being a bit threatening.

FANTASTIC!!! WELL DONE! I am in the UK, and a professional entertainer, radio presenter and actor. I was born 14th February 1952, and grew up with these WONDERFUL shows, including Roy Rogers, CAR 54 WHERE ARE YOU? (Link to The Munsters!), The Munsters, and so on. Sadly, the kids of today are GLUED to I Pads, etc. Don't go out in the fresh air to re-inact the shows. I loved my toy guns, and rifles, not allowed today, as you know, one sunny day, I could be a war hero, the next, Roy Rogers, Lurch, and so on. Best regards, Dave Aspen

I always wondered about the house. I knew there was an actual house in the Los Angeles area at one time but I could never figure out why they used a painting of it instead of a real shot. The 1977 movie had a completely different house. This was a very informative vlog Rick, keep 'em comin'! Take care.

Another fun fact -- Lurch was originally supposed to be mute, but one time during rehearsal Cassidy came out with "You rang?" in that slow, deep bass voice, and everyone on the set cracked up. That became Lurch's signature, and it was the result of a Ted Cassidy ad-lib.

I own all three seasons of this classic show! One of my all time favorites, and for some reason ( upon reflection, I believe it was the caliber of the comedy, as opposed to some of the more silly antics on "The Munsters" ), I always looked forward to macabre escapades of Gomez, Morticia ( always loved that black, slinky gown/outfit ), Lurch, Uncle Fester, Grandmama, Puxley, Wednesday, the mysterious 'Thing', and, whenever he'd show up at the front door of the Addams' mansion, the loveable Cousin Itt! Oh! And lest I forget: Kitty Kat and Cleopatra!

When I was a kid, my mother used to get The New Yorker magazine. I was introduced to Charles Addams cartoons at an early age and loved them. When the TV show came around, I was a fan from the start. My family were antique collectors, and I grew up with a love of Victorian mansions and interior decor. The mansion and its quirky furnishings appealed to me. When the movies came out, I did go see them. They were alright, but I thought they were pale in comparison to the TV show, or to the original cartoons. Thanks for this video. I really enjoyed it.

You might want to note that Ted Cassidy (Lurch) was an accomplished pianist and organist. Unfortunately, he only got to play a prop harpsichord during the show (keys are muted for no sound), never getting a chance to show off his very real skills at the keyboard.

Randall - very interesting. I always thought he was acting when he looked so graceful and comfortable at the keyboard. I loved his posture, "mugging" and his exaggerated flourishes while he "played" and also his sandpapery finger-rubbing sounds before he played.👻

And also Uncle Fester was played by Jackie Coogan who in the 1920s worked with Charlie Chaplin in his feature debut “the kid” and he was considered the cutest kid actor, then after the Addams family he was considered the ugliest adult actor.
@5610winston
@5610winston 5 лет назад
Jackie Coogan was not only a fine actor, but also a legendary pilot in WW II. He held the record for night-time hours in gliders. He was terribly sad to have gone from the most beautiful child star on screen to a monster. On the other hand, one of the most macabre of the Charles Addams cartoons involved his (then-unnamed) Fester character driving a rattle-trap flivver around a blind curve, signaling the driver of what appeared to be a Buick Roadmaster to pass---into the path of an on-coming tractor-trailer.

The one that surprised me most was that Lurch also played Thing. I enjoyed seeing who played Cousin It. I'm glad you condensed all these things into one 8-minute video. I would even watch a 10 or 11 minute video if you told us about the actors playing Uncle Fester, Grand-ma-ma, and Morticia. When I watched this show in the 1960's, my mum would sometimes exclaim: "Oh, Caroline Jones, she was a famous actress in the past!", and apparently she was much older than she looked when she made the Addams Family.

I'm a big Addams and Munsters fan. Read a lot of great books about them, so I knew much of this before hand, and a lot more, like the fact Blossom Rock is the sister of screen actress and singer Jeanette MacDonald. She also had the same agent as Irene Ryan, Granny of the "Beverly Hillbillies."

I have the entire series on DVD with commentary from "Wednesday", "Pugsly", and Cousin Itt" and they have said many of these same points. They also said the John Astin didn't smoke off camera. When cameras stopped, he put out the cigars and threw them away, which they said made the producers mad, cause then they had to buy more cigard for him to film with. They also said John and Caroline Jones were very protective of the kids and would make changes to things for them.
