So my friends welcome back to the 7th video in articles almost finished… almost. And actually I think the last one was really quite hard so …good luck and I’ll do my best! So, this one is THE + ADJECTIVE. This is something that makes your English a little bit more formal, it makes it a bit more professional and again if you’re writing your FCE or CAE essays or even IELTS it just sounds a little bit better to use this. Now, when we talk about groups of people we can use THE + ADJECTIVE. Let’s have a look at … comparing 2 examples. The 1st one: ‘I think we should tax rich people more’. The English is absolutely fine, it’s perfect, it’s fine, BUT ‘I think we should tax the rich more’. That just makes it sound a little bit more formal and just a little bit more professional. And also, your word count has got 1 word smaller so that’s even better. We can use this structure like ‘the rich’ with the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the homeless, the disabled, the dead, the elderly, the blind, the deaf. There’s many many more. There’s quite a few of these. It just sounds to my English ears … it just sounds so much better. We really need to help poor people. We need to help THE POOR. It just sounds a bit stronger you know again therefore more formal. But we need to be careful because the meaning is actually plural, it’s not singular. So for example, I can’t say ‘a poor’. If you said to me: ‘Paul, we need to help a poor.’ I would think: ‘A poor what?’ A poor hamster? A poor fish? What? What do you want to help? So therefore, if you’re going to speak in a singular term then you need to say this: We need to help or I want to help a poor person. OK, him, go and help him. I want to help a poor person or I want to help THE POOR - as a plural concept. So, for example, the homeless need our help. Even the verb is plural. NOT the Homeless needs our help. That’s wrong. The grammar is really, really simple. So try and say some of these words in your head, try to make your own sentences like ‘We need to help the homeless’, ‘We need to find the homeless some shelter’, ‘The homeless are really interesting people’, ‘The dead should be respected’, ‘The young are such hooligans nowadays’. Again, very very simple English but very effective. Now, if you enjoyed that … thumbs-up, comment, subscribe and I’m now going to make the 8th video in a series of articles. I’ll see you in a minute, if you decide to continue watching. So I hope you decide to continue watching. If not, you must continue watching. Ok, bye bye.

Can we say that an adjective becomes a noun, when comes with an article? "Some people say It can't be right When they see a black girl With a white" ... A WHITE.
