It's tremendous. And just so you know what you're looking at: This is "renskiljning" (Swe); separating of reindeer. It is mostly _not_ for slaughter - that is done earlier in the fall, before winter comes, and when the reindeer 'sarvar' (bulls) are at maximum weight after the summer - food (lichen) is obviously scarcer in the winter. What this video shows the 'reindeer separation,' which occurs when the reindeer are going to winter grazing. "With the help of helicopters and other vehicles, the whole reindeer herd is gathered together. Then the reindeer are separated into smaller groups, often divided by owners. The separated groups are then placed on different parts of the Sami villages' land areas by means of special transport vehicles. This is because all reindeer should not go and graze in the same place." It coincides with when the reindeer - who are semi-wild - are naturally moving from their summer grazing areas, i.e. when they are already on the move. The whole thing is just so powerful... The time of year too; look at the light - that's daylight you're looking at there in the beginning! The sun is only up a few hours a day in the winter, and comes barely over the horizon.

grytlappar Thank you for explaining this. It helps to understand the whole process. Beautiful creatures.

I keep a herd in my basement just for the holidays. They get all spun out on amanitas and fly my school bus over the city. But I get shot at when I try to climb down chimneys.

Such beautiful and interesting imagery. I'm sad to know most are bound for slaughterhouses, but am glad to have caught a glimpse of this world. Thank you! I like the idea of the reindeer chit-chatting at 2:10.

Do people eat reindeer often?

@@fubytv731 I don't know. I guess. That's what it says in the description.

@@fubytv731 Reindeer herding is the livelihood of the Sami people. And yes, we eat reindeer in Scandinavia and Finland.

I don't know that 'most' are 'bound for the slaughterhouse.' Actually, they're not. Slaughter is done earlier in the year, in September, when the reindeer - who are semi-wild and run free over large areas (in Sweden, ca. 30% of the land is available for the Samis to use) - bulls mostly, are at top weight, before winter comes - as you can see it has here... What is done here is 'renskiljning' (Swe), "separation of reindeer": "The *reindeer separation* occurs when the reindeer are going to winter grazing. With the help of helicopters and other vehicles, the whole reindeer herd is gathered together. Then the reindeer are separated into smaller groups, often divided by owners. The separated groups are then placed on different parts of the Sami villages' land areas by means of special transport vehicles. This is because all reindeer should not go and graze in the same place."

grytlappar Stolen comment. You should at the least give the original commenter credit.

This is a poetic glimpse, but I hope it will lead to a longer documentary so we can learn more.

Wow -- Powerful film. The last two scenes evoked, both, captivation and despair.

This is an artistic film that has very little to do with the subject matter. We know nothing more about herding reindeer after watching the video.

davidprej Agreed. Minus the written description, it is impossible to know who, what, where and why. The images are beautiful, but the storytelling is absent. Pity.
