Can the traits that make you feel socially awkward actually be the key to unlocking extraordinary success?
We’ve all experienced a time when we felt like an outsider looking in. But for some, this isn’t a rare occurrence, but a constant struggle. In fact, research shows 10 - 15% of the population is socially awkward. But there is a strong correlation between social awkwardness and giftedness. You just have to learn how to use it to your advantage.
I’m excited to welcome ‪@TyTashiro‬ to the show today. Ty is a psychologist and interpersonal relationship expert. He’s spent decades researching human intelligence, neuroscience, personality, and sociology to help us better understand this widely shared trait. He’s also the author of Awkward: The Science of Why We’re Socially Awkward and Why That’s Awesome.
There are few things more psychologically devastating than social exclusion. But being awkward can be like speaking a second language. By taking the same focus and persistence that you naturally give to things you love and applying it to your social life, you can figure out how to fit in without losing yourself. Listen in as Ty shares how you can turn your unique quirks into your greatest superpower and never grapple over an awkward social interaction again.

I’m Asperger’s and really struggle in social situations. My whole family are extroverts and their expectations of me weren’t very realistic. So I masked. But since Lockdown, I realize that I definitely chose the wrong people to emulate in social situations. So I begin again. This book, Awkward, sounds like something I could use.

Awkwardness is the secret sauce that adds flavour to life, making each interaction a delightful surprise and reminding us that perfection is overrated.

One of my poems says: "Clumsiness is seen as a negative quality, but it is a very humbling trait. It’s hard to be conceited in the midst of a clumsy moment." There are definitely upsides to being socially awkward.

Socially fluent = neurotypical. They're socially fluent with each other. Neurotypicals are equally awkward interacting with a neurodivergent person. Socially awkward = neurodivergent and "masking" in order to fit in to neurotypical styles extracts a high price on the neurodivergent person's sense of self and well-being.

This is so humbling. No idea why my brain short circuits in certain situations.

My autistic ass being described to a tee in this video 😅 Every meeting with a new person basically resets all my social skills to beginner, until I have met that person a few times and have figured out how to speak that persons social language, so I start at square one with every new interaction, it is exhausting.

I think personaly that too mutch stimulation for akward people when they look into eyes could be because of bad development brain in young age. becouse kid do not get anought emotional bounding with they parrents/primary caregiver. And they do not teach to manage their feeling in emotional bounding. Gabor Mate in book "craving mind " talk about that and how could be reversible and develop in later age. Specialy he fix his adhd in his 50s. And of corse this message is simplifed

Socially awkward people is called Social Anxiety Disorder, it's a mental disorders of the hormone deficiency and it's real.
@saullandiof5768

I suppose, but it can be massively affected by exposure, so it’s not something you just have to live with. I used to have extreme social anxiety, but I repeatedly put myself in challenging social situations until it subsided. If I spend too much time alone it comes back, and I have to reintroduce the triggers into my life to fix it again

Ah...disappointing. You still don't convince me that the awkward are introverts. And I still think you are an introvert, Jim Kwik, but your dolphin CODE does not describe introverts.

The core of a human and outer appearance can definitely be modified. interesting talk, I would say to clever people not to overthink until your thoughts are clashing with your progress, otherwise you get that stuck feeling, when in reality more than 80% all is okay and you're doing fantastic.
