The Advantages of Mulch 

Mulch is far more than decorative and tidy looking. It conserves water, slows down erosion, regulates soil temperature and pH, and adds nutrients and organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. It helps create soil.
I recommend it highly. It may save you quite a bit of money. You can use your and your neighbor's lawn clippings (provided neither of you use spray), leaves harvested from neighbors and city parks, deciduous wood chips from chipdrop, straw, or even pulled weeds.
