Reading regularly sharpens your mind by exercising your analytical abilities, stimulating your imagination, and activating your memory center. Picking up a book and becoming lost in your imagination can also provide a necessary escape from the stress of the real world.
In fact, a study conducted by the University of Sussex found that reading can reduce stress by up to 68%, making it a more effective stress reliever than listening to music, drinking a cup of hot tea, or going for a walk.
So what're you waiting for? Let's start reading.

I agree with this, but you also need to learn how to retain the information you’re reading and also what you are reading.

This is a wonderful idea, but it sounds a bit outdated as "books" represent only one source of reading material. We have the internet, with literally millions of interesting articles to read. For example, I get started reading an article on Wikipedia, and then find a link to another topic that piques my interest...and then quite a while later I've covered a lot of interesting topics. I'm a bit like the daughter of a friend--my friend says his daughter wishes she could 'clone' herself so each version could be studying a different subject. I had a coworker who talked a lot about books--because his wife had a bookstore. However, one frustrating thing about bookstores is that they only carry, or can obtain, books having publishers in the US, or an American branch of an international publisher. When I'm overseas, I like to visit bookstores to see what else is out there, and I've brought back various books from the UK, Sweden, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Argentina. The only time I ran into a problem was when I was browsing in a bookstore in Malaga, Spain--the owner or manager accused me of "wasting her time" because I wasn't there with one book in mind to buy and then leave. However, it turned out I was staying with a colleague who was a good customer of hers, so after I told him, he and I went back to the bookstore so he could introduce me to her; when we got there, I didn't let on what had happened--it was more fun to let her imagination keep her wondering what I might have said!

Okay, first of all, it definitely matters what you're reading. Nearly everyone I see on the bus reads either self-help books or simple fiction. Such books won't help you beyond vocabulary and plausibly language use. It's only if you're reading dense, hard, deeply conceptual books such as the Handbook of Neurology, Homer's Odyssey, or Dostoevsky that you'd get any benefits. Challenging video games will probably lead to more cognitive returns than reading as might even ironically enough RU-vid and TV shows. Furthermore, much of cognition is inherited, so trying to read a lot to compensate for that is a cope. Also, drinking tea won't relieve stress, it's literally a form of caffeine, which is one of the largest ways by which people increase cortisol. lol
