Ward Bond is in this too, he is one of the guards . Frederic March is not forgotten nowadays , possible with anyone who isnt into early movies but if they have watched him in the first "A star is born" or "Best years of our lives " they will witness great acting .
Fay Wray is just wonderful in this. Of course, her iconic performance in KING KONG is what she'll always be remembered for (talk about perfect casting) but by no means does it end there.
+Anthony Crnkovich You're absolutely right about Fay Wray. Among her other fine films over the years are: THE WEDDING MARCH (1928) THE FOUR FEATHERS (1929) THE FINGER POINTS (1931) THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (1932) ANN CARVER'S PROFESSION (1933) ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON (1933) THE BOWERY (1933) VIVA VILLA! (1934) THE RICHEST GIRL IN THE WORLD (1934) WOMAN IN THE DARK (1934) WHEN KNIGHTS WERE BOLD (1936) IT HAPPENED IN HOLLYWOOD (1937) MURDER IN GREENWICH VILLAGE (1937) ADAM HAD FOUR SONS (1941) MELODY FOR THREE (1941) TREASURE OF THE GOLDEN CONDOR (1952) SMALL TOWN GIRL (1953) QUEEN BEE (1955) HELL ON FRISCO BAY (1957) CRIME OF PASSION (1957) TAMMY AND THE BACHELOR (1957)
Yes.This is an example of what was possible had she had better support for her career -she was definitely an underused talent.I really cannot think of a reason except perhaps envy or perhaps she was simply too decent a person to get certain parts.
This film is based on the play "The Firebrand" which was a hit in NY in 1924. It was planned as Rudolph Valentino's next project; sadly, he died in August 1926. The project seems to have been resurrected, adapted from the play with some rearranging and may be very similar to the production which would have starred Valentino in a silent version. When I watch this, I am envisioning Valentino in the role! ( I love Frederic March, but I am seeing the spirit of Valentino in this film!)
I recently watched a TV mini-series called 'Rudolph Valentino - the Legend' (2014) in which the role of Valentino is played by Gabriel Garko - great actor.
thanks for posting, Frank Morgan is always a hoot, Fredrick March is kind of forgotten today but quite the comedic swashbuckler, Constance Bennett was good as the alluring and dangerous countess, but the highlight to me was Fay Wray as the utterly clueless Angela. Wray was far more versatile then a lot of modern movie goers realize if they only saw her in King Kong. Her comedic timing was great and the best line in the movie "if your going to hang him, mother and I would like to leave."
Thank you for uploading this black and white movie. I love old movies and I enjoy A LOT reviewing them! Frank Morgan plays great! No wonder that he got an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, but the Oscar went toooo... Clark Gable - 'It Happened One Night'.
Fay Wray! Her of the strange beauty. This Duke of Florence was called "the Moor" as he was, well, a man of color as we say today - but you wouldn't know it from Frank Morgan's rather broad interpretation. He was also assassinated age 26, but don't let that get in the way of a clever and funny film, which this is.
According to IMDB, Lucille Ball may appear as a "lady-in-waiting," but this is "unconfirmed" (and, of course, uncredited). See if you agree with me that she may be the lady over the Duchess's left shoulder at about 4:13.
+Jeff Bloomfield Louis Calhern's performance in this film reminds me of his performance as Ambassador Trentino in DUCK SOUP just a year or two earlier. In my opinion, let's make it six good performances, adding Vince Barnett as Ascanio to the list.
The Affairs of Cellini (1934) Disney Vault Film production: 20th Century Studios Film distributor: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures TV distributor: Disney Platform Distribution
I too enjoy Fay Wray's films, Woman in the Shadows shows another side of her talent as does Ann Carver's profession, the former is on RU-vid but not the ladder
Peccato sia in inglese, non conosco la lingua. Spero di trovarlo in italiano. Gregory La Cava una garanzia... ed un grande Fedrich March nei panni di Benvenuto Cellini che dire.... formidabile.!
Translation: Too bad it's in English, I don't know the language. I hope to find it in Italian. Gregory La Cava a guarantee ... and a great Fredrich March in the role of Benvenuto Cellini what to say .... terrific.! - Amico mio, prova con i sottotitoli, dovrebbe apparire in italiano. Buona fortuna!
