Great programme, but there is a mistake that I'm surprised got past the narrator and post production. At 15:57 they say 'The abdication of King Edward the Seventh' . This is incorrect. It was Edward the Eighth who abdicated. Edward the Seventh was his Grandfather who died in 1910.

Oh I remember that. When we heard that we inundated the film makers with complaints. 🙂 Truthfully the Irish didn't give a shit then, nor do they give a shit now, about who was King back then.

Parts of this doc are difficult to hear and the film breaks up.

I was initially suspicious of De Valera's response to the treaty - however it might well be that without his intransigence regarding the Oath etc political stagnation might have become total

Thanks To Him Economic Stagnation certainly was , and what was the Alternative to the Treaty ? He Was pretty much in power For 40 years and did not retrieve one inch of the 6 counties . If he had accepted it and made the free State a open and prosperous Place ( like it is now) Maybe attitudes would not have hardened

after the next election we must have a new constitution and the people must have the final say on any major acts effecting the people too many have too much power in a free society

Wake up..... We don't need a new constitution that would be a disaster!! All we need is for the people to realise what constitution is the recognised constitution that sits in our supreme courts and it ain't no blue book!! an bunreacht 1937

@@irishjaydrunkonguinness105 I thought his father was Cuban/Spanish (which I think means a Spanish colonialist on the Island of Cuba before independence) like Castro's father who was a non commissioned officer in the Spanish army before Cuban independence from Spain1898' but either way whilst Eammon De Valera had Latino or Spanish ancestry/paternity he was American by birth and Irish by upbringing, I don't know if he spoke Spanish as well as Irish and English but I am sure given his educational achievement's I do not he would not have found learning Spanish a major challenge. Either way I agree he was not ever a Spanish citizen.
