Both Best Buy and Netflix have recently announced that physical DVD sales will be stopped by 2024. The decision has been seen by many as another massive blow to physical media and a huge disappointment to movie lovers.
While physical media may never die -- take vinyl, for example -- it's had a resurgence. But when it comes to shows and movies, what comes out now is all on varying streaming services. This undoubtedly offers convenience, yet we give up some freedom of watching whatever we want, when we want: tinyurl.com/4h8...

I have Amazon prime for the free shipping I do not even watch 30 min of their streaming a month. I have DVDs and blurays of my favorite films. Physical media is a one time purchase you can enjoy for years with no ads being inserted. I recently watched my special edition DVD of Fight Club that I purchased in 2000. In 2023 the 23 year old disc played perfectly. I have CDs from the 80s and 90s. I recently enjoyed Music Box by Mariah Carey. I purchased that CD in 1993. 30 years later the CD played perfectly. As long as you have a working player you can enjoy CDs and DVDs for decades after a one time purchase price. No monthly fee involved.

I unsubscribed from all streaming platforms. The only one I'm keeping for now is Netflix so I can't watch the last season of Cobra Kai. After that bye bye Netflix. I recently just bought a 4k UHD Blu Ray player and have begun buying "new" Blu Ray and 4k Blu Ray DVD's, and I've pulled my old DVD's from out of the closet. As streaming platforms raise their prices and don't carry tv shows and movies more and more people want to watch but can't, I predict more people will start ditching streaming in the years to come. Amazon is already seeing users canceling their prime subscriptions because of their new ads garbage. Owning it yourself > renting lesser quality from a multi-billion dollar corporation.

I sail the seas for the vast majority of my content. If it's something I truly love however, I will gladly buy a physical copy of it.

physical media, especially 4k blu ray, also has a much, much higher bitrate than streaming. no buffering. no video quality dropouts. no color banding. better motion detail. if you have a ps5, you need to try a 4k blu ray, before the market shifts to all digital.

Physical media will always be superior. I have several movies and games on my shelves that I can still remember picking up and have funny memories from like trips with friends.

I believe Sony and Discovery worked out their differences and are no longer pulling the content from the Sony store.

The reason Best Buy stopped selling DVDs and blu rays is because nobody buys them…. From Best Buy. Because they overprice them. Anytime I’ve seen movies at Best Buy or even games they were always cheaper somewhere else. Same with Borders and FYE. The physical media is killing it in used stores. Like my local place I go to all the time Mckays in Nashville Tn. I see people in line all the time with carts full of DVDs and videos games. The biggest problem is also these big Billion dollar companies are trying to sell DVDs and blu rays of tv shows that have 8 episodes a season for $40. Nobodies gonna pay that either. It’s the industries fault that physical media is overpriced.
