This second video on Horizon Zero Dawn completes my journey into this post-apocalyptic future teeming with mechanical wildlife. It's the first PS4 title explored on the show and odds are it won't be the last either! I hope you enjoy this latest video and don't forget you can become a Patreon or RU-vid member to get access to these videos early (and help me make more of'em).
Hi there Tommy, I am new here, but as I have been watching your videos, it got me thinking. Why not run a game jam, no rewards, something simple. We get to make a game with the AI being the emphasis in like (e.g.) 2 days. I think this is something everyone would enjoy and allows us to try out some of the ideas spoken about in your videos. Just please don't restrain us to Unity or some other engine, it would be nice to see web examples of complex AI behaviour.
I worked as a contractor on the animation team for HZD, and spent every as much free time as possible speaking with the various departments to try and understand how the AI of HZD was created. I stayed late to search through the companies wiki. I searched through old email blasts. I harangued members of the AI team over beers . I did anything and everything I could think of. And yet these two videos explain their systems better than anything at the studio could. Awesome work, as always.
Sweet! I was simply blown away by this game upon release. The animation is top notch Cody. You, your coworkers and the studio do not get enough credit for this game. I spent hours just running around and watching the machines move. When HZD2 is released I'll throw my money at the PS5. I do hope you are part of that team!
I want you to know how much positive impact this had on my 2 pre teen girls. HZD is the only game they both have completed thru to the end of a game with a campaign. Its a beautiful crafted story with top notch gameplay loop. It SHOULD have won game if the year and would gave if it wouldn't have had to compete with breath of the wild
Not flying under stuff is also a sensible rule for the machines to follow if they were real, flying under objects is a good way to get a rock/net/firebomb dropped on you by humans.
Would be pretty cooled if it landed next to the bridge and walked under it using the other AI system though. That would be a shocker when trying to hide under such places ;)
Such a high quality video. I am very glad I stumbled across your Alien AI video. Keep it up, for I feel that your channel is gonna grow really quickly.
Fascinating analysis of an absolutely fantastic game. Makes me want to fire it up again. Everything I read or watch about Guerrilla Games makes me respect their passion and hard work all the more.
This was so exciting and fascinating to learn about, but the whole time I was just thinking - this sunnuvagun got the exclusive outfits. Fantastic videos, Tommy. And much congrats on your channel anniversary! :)
I love how robust they made the AI system. It seems as if the potential is already there, for example, to have a machine that can switch back and forth between land and air based navigation like the birds do, only more deliberately. I'm imagining something like a Griffin or perhaps an Oriental dragon. The one machine you barely mentioned which I'm curious about is the rock breaker. I'm sure it has its own nav system for movement underground.
We're using this exact AI programming to program our robots at DARPA. The rest of the games are just real-life simulation to test this AI without having even the technology to make these yet. It's great how video games and developers can help in the real world! We can program and problem solve for technology ahead of time!
Just gotta keep asking good folk like yourself to like videos, subscribe to the channel, click the bell thing and share my content. It's the only way the wider RU-vid ecosystem will notice channels like mine. Looking on the bright side, the channel earned more subscribers in the last two weeks than it did in the first 3 years. It's slowly getting more and more popular and I'm very grateful to everyone that sticks around for each new video. 😀
I absolutely loved Horizon Zero Dawn, and when I saw your first video on it I was ecstatic. HZD sits atop my favorite games of all time and while, I would have liked a PC release since that is where I play most of my games, it doesn't take away from the masterpiece that was put on display. I loved every second from start to finish and after watching this video I think i'll be going back and doing a third playthough.
This is the second time you've mentioned enemies having a sense of smell (the other being Half Life). I want to see this taken further, where you actually sweat. So the more active you are, the smellier you are, until you get rained on or go swimming (it has to reset somehow) or even roll around in mud.
wait, this channel is 5 years old???? why does it seem so new? BTW, great video and made me appreciate even more the programmers' effort on building such a system ( especially that I'm not good at programming)
Guerrilla were inspired by monster hunter world ..even they sent a thank you card to MHW developers and also due to their special events with the aloy skin
Hello Tommy, I noticed you've put a game on steam. I have a game ready for STEAM ..but having trouble putting out on there. Could you do a tutorial on this PLEASE. Not many good UP TO DATE tutorials or there. Thanks.. Ps. Nice to hear a UK ACCENT 🇬🇧
I know decima and every game engine is c++ based, but knowing the language isn't enough, I really want to learn to do this, I love AI behaviours, how is this career called? and what college offers this?
Computer Science, Software Engineering, Statistics, Math, or Physics depending on what you really want to do with it. Neural Networks? Math, Computer Science Physics Engines? Physics, Math, Computer Science Other stuff? All of the above The main thing is to get a job with a game developing company, and have them teach you how they do stuff until you have the basic skills to do it yourself or to get a new job with a company that makes the types of games you want to make and have the position you want open. Practice. Programming from home tends to be difficult as you lack the resources and tools to develop anything on this level, but you can more easily program games that wold be 5-10 years old for AAA companies. *cough* unity engine *cough* or even older *cough* Side Scrollers *cough*. Great learning tools but you you will have difficulty being on the cutting edge building the content shown in these types of videos. I am working on an utility AI for my crappy game and boi is that difficult. Now all I need is a neural network to do it for me haha
But how are slow moving wings metal bird of this size supposed to fly? So effortlessly too. And no reactors either. Talk about suspension of disbelief.
Sadly no. I've exhausted pretty much everything I know about the game and have - for now - moved onto other projects. But perhaps if/when a sequel arises, I'll be able to come back to it.
