THIS VIDEO IS A RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FOLLOWING SITUATION IN FLIGHT:
19.11.2020. A Republic Airlines Embraer 170 (E170), performing flight RPA5809 / YX5809 from Washington Reagan National airport, DC (USA) to Cleveland-Hopkins international airport, OH (USA), during initial climb out of Washington, at 12000 feet, reported that the aircraft produced twice “an interesting shudder” and requested return back to DCA.
TEXT VERSION OF COMMUNICATIONS (Read if subtitles in video were fast):
TOWER: RPA5809, wind calm RW 19 cleared for take-off.
RPA5809: RW 19, cleared for take-off, RPA5809.
TOWER: RPA5809, contact Potomac Departure.
RPA5809: Departure, good evening, RPA5809.
COMMENTS: RPA5809 contacted departure, we can’t hear the pilot.
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, Departure, radar contact, climb and maintain 17000.
COMMENTS: We can’t hear the readback.
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, cleared direct DOCTR.
COMMENTS: It seems, that RPA5809 called controller.
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, go ahead.
RPA5809: Request to return back to DCA.
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, roger, cleared to DCA via radar vectors, turn left heading 320 and descend and maintain 4000.
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, when you’ll get a chance just let me know the issue.
RPA5809: As we were climbing through about 8000 feet, the aircraft developed an interesting shudder. It happened twice. It’s not happening right now but we would like to return to the field.
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, understood, thank you.
RPA5809: 320, correct?
DEPARTURE: RPA5809, affirmative, 320.
COMMENTS: Controller is vectoring RPA5809 for RW 19.

COMMENTS: Unfortunately, recording of tower frequency is unavailable. We don’t have further information, but it seems RPA5809 landed safe on runway 19.

HOW I DO VIDEOS:
1) I monitor media, airspace, looking for any non-standard, emergency and interesting situation.
2) I find communications of ATC unit for the period of time I need.
3) I take only phrases between air traffic controller and selected flight.
4) I find a flight path of selected aircraft.
5) I make an animation (early couple of videos don’t have animation) of flight path and aircraft, where the aircraft goes on his route.
6) When I edit video I put phrases of communications to specific points in video (in tandem with animation).
7) Together with my comments (voice and text) I edit and make a reconstruction of emergency, non-standard and interesting situation in flight.

When I flew the line, we would return for Mx and/or write up something...never saw the resolution of the issue....were swapped out to a different aircraft so quickly. Wish that information would have been passed along.

@@vladimirfromukraine419 Agreed.... Have gotten odd sensations from stuck/sticky outflow valves in pressurization... those pneumatic systems can give odd sensations as they hammer your ears or bang behind the aft pressure bulkhead...

As for me, it is engine vibration issue.

How does one decide if a shudder is interesting? Certain aircraft will do that if a small maintenance door is left unlatched.

If it isn't normal, it's interesting. Little things turn into big things.

Have several thousand hours and a captain in that plane and you get to know it’s in and outs and how it behaves in certain configurations. You know the difference between turbulence and weird shutters. It’s not an emergency however because it happened multiple times and so early into the flight it’s better to return to the field then continue and have it turn into a full blown emergency.
