Thanks for this Mat,...that is indeed a good rat shooting spot. It is amazing that rats can reason that it's safer to eat in daylight when the nocturnal owls are out and about. However they didn't count on you and the RedWolf being there on this day!! From what I can see here, that Umarex Buck Mark URX is a very close copy of the real thing,...I have one and it's a good shooting pistol. Mine, of course, is in .22LT.
Great to see you out on the rats Mat, we've been on them for the past month or two at the farm and in broad daylight too. shame I don't have a video camera as they were doing a "Mission Impossible" run from shed to shed... superb fun! /simon

Excellent. The benefits of a properly powered gun for the task in hand was evident. Clinical kills without as much as a flutter or the usual theatricals. I firmly believe that at least for the .22 air rifle 16~17 ft.lbs should be the legal power limit and not 12 which I consider quite under powered for shooting live quarry. Thanks again.

Thanks for another great show. There is something very satisfying about rat shooting. With regard to the pistol test, I know you said it isn't a target pistol but it would still have been nice to see what sort of groups it was capable of at 10 metres in paper.
Thanks very much Julian. I really love my shooting so I'm glad it comes across. It would be a breath of fresh air to see any serious countryman or countrywoman on Countryfile. Regrettably, the BBC seems reluctant to portray country sports, or indeed country life, in a fair and accurate light. I assume they're afraid of letters of complaint from all their meat-eating and milk-drinking viewers who would rather remain ignorant to the realities of food production. Cheers. Mat
theshootingshow totally agree. Sadly countryfile is more about showcasing the presenters as BBC celebs than the actual subject matter. It used to be good in the 80s when it was aired on Sunday afternoon, now it's like watching the bloody One Show!
I visit Mat's video's quite regularly, I have the occasional rat's in the back garden and usually pop them off with either my Ben Franklin .177 or my Webley Osprey .22 as the neighbours would get a bit miffed if I used the 12 bore! Might treat myself to something a bit newer and exotic. Watching his show's, beats anything on the box! ;-)
I have found that dome head pellets tend to be the most accurate. Am I wrong or am I seeing your pellets go through? My point is, I use the dome head pellets as accuracy is most important for me and they happen to be cheaper. If you are going entirely through your pellets are not expanding. Might as well use the cheap ones? It seems like when I shot 10 of my jbs .177 hunting pellets a couple would fly. My groups were better with dome heads. Maybe that is my setup. Anyway, thanks for the videos.
Not sure how I subscribed to this channel but I stay subbed just for Mat's shooting of small rodents. It's nice to see a different style of hunt from our neighbors across the pond. I'm sure those .22 caliber pellets from an air rifle cost a lot less than my .22LR ammo. I wish I knew how they performed out to ranges of 30+ meters. Cheers from the USA.

Matthew Budden. Watch SA airgunner as he has no problem with FAC rated airguns. They are very accurate and thats the sort of range he uses. Hitting prairie dogs and small animals. He uses a range of airguns from Fx impact to Daystate. Can you hire one or try using at the range
I'll do my best. It's usually a JSB variant for the hunting - Air Arms, JSB or Daystate. In this case I was using Daystate Rangemaster Sovereign. All the best. Mat
hello mat, great show as always. on some of your reviews of different guns you use a holder for the target sheet. that just sticks into the ground, and you can place a target card /sheet in there, "clamped in " where can i buy one of these, i cant seem to find them here in Denmark where i live. I got myself a wonderfully inaccurate Юнкер-2 a few years ago. Pretty good looking gun. I slammed a huge scope on it and blinged it out with a laser. It's total "RICE" - Really Idiotic Cosmetic Enhancements - but it's been a decent investment. Actually gone up in price, even if I sell it second hand.
I have questions for anyone with ratting experience. I am on a budget, and am looking at the following setup to start hobby ratting; Gamo Wildcat Whisper .177 air rifle, Bizoom hunting flashlight with scope mount, zoomable focus, red/green cree led, and a OTW 3-9x40, lighted reticle 1" scope. All are on Amazon. Will this scope hold up on a breakbarrel air rifle, or is there a better budget scope I should get? Thank you!
That Umarex looks nice. I prefer a gun that's made out of metal, or at least a hard-wearing plastic. Once had a Gamo pistol (as my first gun), but it died soon after I bought it because of the plastic internals. Was a good starter plinker, though. My plinker now is the Walther Tactical Nighthawk. Actually pretty damn accurate for a pistol.
Just wanted to ask Matt, What is your longest shot with an Air Gun? Mine was 200 meters using a Benjamin Trail Stealth. Was out hunting some starlings for dog food.
I don't shoot over very long ranges and avoid taking shots that carry a high risk of wounding. My maximum range is probably about a quarter of yours. Mat
theshootingshow I prefer longer ranges because I found shooting under 100 yards usually destroys my target, thus leaving me nothing to eat. The only birds that cause a risk of being wounded are pigeons, usually the city type because the their usually larger. Desert pigeons are usually less of a hassle. Just so you know I am only 17, bought then gun when I was 16 😁.
It depends on the angle the shot is presented at. At this range, and with .22 calibre, I'm looking to put the pellet into or through the forward area of the chest. All the best. Mat
Love watching you shoot! I am looking for a break barrel or under lever for squirrel hunting. I had a Remington .22 break barrel for about 10 years but it just broke, and I am now on the look for the perfect replacement. I am currently looking at the Hatsan Torpedo 155 Vortex in .22. Do you have an opinion on that rifle, or do you have a better rifle that you would suggest? If you have the time I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
Saintsfisherman. I use a weichrach HW97kt. Underlever.. Brilliant accurate rifle. Fixed barrels ard alot more accurate than a breakbarrel. Had it for 5 years and never lets me down
Sub12 so boring to be honest very weak for larger stuff,, i have a 25 cal kalibrgun cricket that pushes 33.95 gr approximately 56 foot pounds of energy that compared to 12 is alot of different ,, i feel sorry for brits that spend over a thousand pounds for sub 12 .
I like these vids on the Airgun Show but I do sometime wonder what the target audience is, ie the UK or US. Most airgunners here in Matt's home country do not have FAC and I do wish Matt would use sub 12 more often, which I believe would have been more than adequate in this particular video, and more representative of the equipment that most of his fans here will use to try and emulate his exploits. Not a major gripe - just perhaps a reminder to have a nod back to where it all began... As a foot note, I do commend TAGS on the quality of their hunting videos - there's an awful lot of dreadfully shot and edited Airgun vids on RU-vid that are virtually unwatchable.
Hi Joe. We try not to overload the show with FAC hunting. I'm only using the Red Wolf at 16ft/lb here, and my tactics would have been exactly the same with sub-12ft/lb. Glad you're enjoying the show. We've got plenty of sub-12ft/lb hunting lined up for forthcoming episodes. All the best. Mat

Thank you Mat. Loving the Daystate Mk4 FAC but I am looking to use .25 cal and think the FX, with its adjustable power wheel will be more suited to .25. At least that was my thinking. Primos mk2 tripod also on the list. Gardens here in Norfolk are over run with rabbits and squirrels so if you are ever in the area??? you would be most welcome. Richard.
The rats in my garden only seem to come out during the day, I can leave a bait pile over night and it won't be touched by the morning. I assume they scavenge further afield under the cover of darkness and feed in the gardens closer to the burrow during the day.
