Served in the Hungarian army as a conscript. This rifle was amazingly stable and accurate at the range. Just a stock AK clone, nothing fancy, but it beats laps on the AK-63D, the other AK variant we used to have. The army doesn't have them any more, they were passed to the police, and some Arab countries, including Palestine and Iraq. However, it's not a "paratrooper" weapon, this is a common misconception! The name AMD means "Automata Módosított Deszant", Automatic Modified "Dessant". The latter is a Russian word, and it means riflemen who disembark from a vehicle to fight. Paratroopers were called "aerial dessant" in Warsaw Pact terminology. For some reason, the Hungarians never called infantry "dessant", but we widely called paratroops "aerial dessant", now as a loanword from Russian. Thus the word "dessant" gained currency as a term for paratroopers, and paratroopers only. In fact, the AMD was meant for traditional "dessant", disembarking from a BMP or a BTR. There lies the answer to "why the AMD-65 exists". It's a weapon with a short barrel and a foldable stock. It's much more convenient in the cramped space of a BMP. Also fun fact: it's actually designated "AMD-65/5". The 5 isn't a version number: it means that a soldier would receive 5 magazines with it. One goes into the rifle, and four into a magazine belt.

The AMD-65 was the first AK I ever built. I got the parts kit for my 21st birthday and soon bought all the tooling and put it together. The only thing I did to it was add an AMD65TECH cheek riser to it to make it easier to get a sight picture. I've ran that gun in a couple of carbine matches and it is by far my favorite 7.62 AK variant.

My favorite AK & addiction was Tapco's catalog full of AKMD 65's at unbelievable prices back in the day. I got so burned out from building them. That I still have 2 of the kit gun's I ran into in a recent move. They were Tapco's lowest priced kit gun's back in the 90s. Generally selling from $65-$69.99, or the handyman special of 5 for $250. They were such a novelty AK that they were hot sellers @ twice the price for less gun! Lol And to expidite the assembly who needs rivits, we just spot welded the crap out of the receivers onto the trunnions. Making for some slick sexy smooth sided AK's that never fell apart. The 30rd mags were not a problem just grind the lip off the rear of the fwd grip & it was rock & roll all day. And do stuff some heat resistant wool into the barrel gaurd for added comfort. And that was my contribution to world peace in the 90s. That was back when a guy could still buy a sardine can of ammo at $45-50 for 1000rds. And that was a lot of all day fun on target

I learned to fire an automatic weapon for the first time, and this was it. I can not say anything bad about it, mainly because you mentioned all of them in the video! I kinda missed the tear-down part, but its understandable, since theres nothing new in the inside compared to a standard AK-47. Was fun to tear it apart over and over, and clean it, not because it required it or anything, but because the officers commanded the whole squad to do so, in our "free-time" lmao. Great video! As a former user by the Hungarian law enforcement, let me add my two cents... Developed as a compact AK-version for the Hungarian army. It was not generally issued for the army troops. (They used the wooden stock - and foldable stock versions later - of the AKM.) It was only issued for special recon and paratropper units mainly. (In the Cold War-era no sub-machineguns were officially issued. Hence there was a demand for a compact CQB weapon solution) Later the former socialist governments militia (the Eastern Block equivalent of the National Guard) was equipped with them in high numbers. Law enforcement units were the next. (It was in much higher numbers issued like the AMP-69 with the grenade launcher capability - they stayed always a rare sight) Intended as a makeshift solution for the role of the shotgun-submachinegun weapon category, which was completely missed from the arsenal (apart from a few spec. units: They had the VZ-61 Scorpion, later mini Uzis, and some prison guard units had very few shotguns). Hitherto this 7.62x39 cartridge with its unneccessary, army-level penetration is totally unsuitable for urban areas, where are many civilian bystanders to endanger. (As a benefit, makes most body armors useless...) Thankfully this weapons seen very little use, so with luck you can grab almost new condition pieces, despite the older age, from cold-war storage sale. Pros: - Rugged, reliable, low maintenance need - Lighter and cheaper than most of the AK´s - Most parts are compatible with the AKM - The muzzle break is really effective Cons: - The plastic parts feels cheap and slippery - The general workmanship lacks a lot (typical cold-war mass production, function over everything, production marks everywhere). - The front grip angle is anti-anatomical (but there is a reason- the arched magazine required the space) - lack of bayonet mount points Keep up the good work! ;)

It's hard to make an AK really bad. Ugly is very possible of course, but they don't come with a whole lot you could fuck up to begin with. The stock would probably be something that gets very uncomfortable very fast. But you have to do something if you want a lighter and more compact gun

Being hungarian, I love the AMD. I know there are mixed feelings about it, but lets not forget, it was NOT designed to be your main assoult rifle. As you said, it was designed for paratroopers, tankers, for recon units and allso officers. The soldiers who used them, moastly liked them, as they were smaller and easier to carry around than a normal ak. My father back in the day had no problem shooting it accurately. I think he still has 1 live round somewhere as a memory from those days. As this is Europe, I could only get an airsoft version, but at least I have it. They say these were built very good quality.

Writing from Hungary: I tried this at a shooting range. The foregrip and the folding wire stock was removed. Without the mag it looked so innocent like a pellet gun 😅 but when I pulled the trigger the dewastating power shocked me. Really suprising was how quiet was it in the open field and the low recoil 😮 it may be a garbage in the Ak47 family but this was my first experience

My company imported a few AMD-65s about 20 tears ago and had to convert them into parts sets. Most were new guns, all were packaged in the original Hungarian crate and inner packaged in sealed plastic bags with accessories. We did take a couple of parts sets and as an SOT remanufactured them. They are indeed a compact firearm and quite handy, Muzzle blast is, as you noted, somewhat pronounced. The biggest issue that I have with them is if carried at the ready position for any length of time you will want to wear a glove (if right handed) as the button for the stock release will dig into the first knuckle of the thumb on your trigger hand. The screw slot doesn't help the situation in that regard.

Back when AK parts sets, (hated the term kit), were inexpensive and came with barrels plus ALL the fire control parts, I purchased many. The AMD65 was the first I built. Made my own bending dies and my own flats and rails from sheet steel. Back then nearly every parts set I got was numbers matching and appeared unissued. Point being the AMD65 was and is the most fun to shoot with a group. The two most common questions are, what is that and are you done shooting yet? It is obnoxiously loud to others on the firing line.

If you thought your mods were dumb, I bubba'd the hell out of mine. I replaced the trunnion with a regular AKM one so I could put a Magpul stock on it, replaced the dust cover with a TWS rail, and modded a polymer handguard to replace the UTG one that came with the gun. When I got mine it also came with a weird funky tactical pistol grip. Eventually found out the whole receiver was bent so the front end of the gun was going away right. Replaced the receiver and decided that I would restore it as well. So it's back to normal just I need to put a sling loop on it but I haven't been able to find one
