Have to agree with Alex about the xj6. Seeing those in the wild when they were still daily drivers always turned my head. One of the first “everyday” sedans I ever payed much attention to. Also the MGB GT is really a delightful car. Good pick Amy!

Greetings from Denmark! In 1974 our neighbor got a new car ....he was a very stylish man, so of course it had to be an Alfa Romeo Montreal. He actually got it on my 12. birthday...and when he heard so , he gave me probably the best birthday-gift ever ....a ride in his new Montreal! I've been in love ever since! I think the very same car is now for sale at a local classic cardealer for approx. 100.000 USdollars ....Wife tells me we stick to our Toyota!😢 Love your approach to cars ...love your videos...new subscriber!

It's such an unexpected surprise! One of the interesting things about this mechanism is that it's vacuum powered so they can typically only operate when the engine is running (as opposed to popup headlights that were typically electric motor driven like in the Ferrari 308). If you operate the lever recently after the engine shuts off you MIGHT get them to fold down, but the engine has to be running to get them back up. Absolutely peak "because it's cool" design philosophy.

Congratulations on a very good evaluation of the Alfa Montreal. However, I should add a couple of clarifications to your assessment. The majority of the Montreals were equipped with seating that used 'colourful' velour fabric faces while the sides and backs were trimmed in Texalfa - a type of vinyl that possessed a leather type appearance. Leather trimmed seating was a very rare option on the Alfa Montreal. As your Montreal appears to be in European delivered spec it naturally has a km/h speedometer. An MPH speedometer was fitted to Montreals delivered to other markets such as the UK, South Africa and Australia - as per my Australian car - so they were available, and if you are very keen can be found on the second hand market.

We would love to, but it will be a while. We've started a restoration of the car and right now it is just about as disassembled as it can get. It will probably take a couple of years to finish the restoration but as soon as its done, I would absolutely love to do an episode with it! That said Vintage Underground is documenting the restoration so we will potentially link to anything they post or share it here as well!

This is a big part of why we decided to do it for the test pilot episode for this series! It is a beautiful sculpture, unique from other cars in many ways and also from other Alfa Romeos. On top of that, it is a very little known car, especially in the United States as it was never sold here. We will definitely feature other fantastic Alfa Romeos on the channel in the not too distant future and it will be interesting comparing this car to them as even with underlying similarities, there is much to make the Montreal stand out.
@marcfellman3335
@marcfellman3335 9 месяцев назад
Some nice commentary and footage. For accuracy I think you may find that the Montreal engine was not derived from Alfas four cylinder engines but (conceptually) from the typo 33 V8. Also the V8 is a quad cam not a dual overhead.
@Everyday2Exotic
@Everyday2Exotic 9 месяцев назад
Oh that's some awesome insight! Thanks for sharing. Was the 33 V8 what ended up going in the Montreal or was it another engine?
@ahaugland1
@ahaugland1 9 месяцев назад
You are probably right about the engine being derived from the 33, which was a ground up design though it shares similarities in design to the Nord engines as well. As far as quad cam, I would argue that twin cam is equally appropriate for a V8 as it implies that there are two cams per cylinder head. That said, Dual Overhead Cam would probably have been a better term to use as it's less ambiguous than either. Thank you for your comments and corrections! I greatly appreciate it!
@marcfellman3335
@marcfellman3335 9 месяцев назад
@@Everyday2Exotic My understanding is the engine in the typo 33 and the engine in the Montreal do not share any parts. When comparing the two it is perhaps more accurate to say that the Montreal engine may have been inspired by the typo 33. Supporting this view I would seem Carlo Chiti ex-Ferrari engineer and latterly involved with Alfa Romeo's competition department, Autodelta had some input to both engines. Similarities include both engines have four cam, dry sump and mechanical fuel injection (although the Montreal used Spica injection whilst the typo 33 used Lucas I think).
@MLC...
@MLC... 9 месяцев назад
The 33 and Montreal engines do not share parts. The 33 even sports a flat-plane crank, so it soundsmore like a four cylinder. I do however think that these engines all share the DNA of the four cylinder twin cam - twin cam arrangement, wet sleeve blocks, combustion chamber, etc.

I believe I have read that the vents in the rear have indeed have a “function” allowing some sort of ventilation from the cabin ?!
@ahaugland1
@ahaugland1 8 месяцев назад
To be honest, it's quite possible, as it is common for cars, especially of this era, to have external vents to allow airflow through the cabin. The intent is to improve the effectiveness of the airflow, whether it is from the blower motor or open windows, as without a way to let the increased air pressure created out, fresh air would not easily come in. That said, however, on the majority of cars with cabin airflow vents the vents themselves are quite small For example on the BMW 3.0CS or Datsun 240Z there is a vent hidden behind the emblems on the C pillars. In comparison, the Montreal's rear vents far exceed what would be necessary to accomplish the same function so are by an large almost purely decorative.
@Everyday2Exotic
@Everyday2Exotic 8 месяцев назад
On our inspection, they were all covered up just underneath the metallic vent layer, but it's absolutely possible that they're contributing somehow. As Alex mentioned, it's likely a disproportionally small amount compared to their size

@ahaugland1
@ahaugland1 9 месяцев назад
i would agree that even for Alfas of its era, its handling isn't as great. A lot of that is the added weight when compared to the other contemporary 105 series Alfas. It's still decent when compared with a lot of everyday cars of the same era and it was definitely more of a touring car in design than real supercar, but absolutely looks fantastic!
@GiampietroDiSanto
@GiampietroDiSanto 8 месяцев назад
Yeah but this was not supposed to be a supercar: it was a more expensive, more stylish and more powerful daily-drive sedan than the average italian production back in the day. Alfas never meant to be luxurious too (like Ferrari and Maserati), they were focused on combining spicy engines for some good fun with daily needs.

We are in Oregon filming this, which is on the 45th parallel, about in line with Italy. That said, the climate here is much more similar to France due to the cooler Pacific ocean, so we are very much in that same sort of temperate zone as much of Europe. Like the rest of the world, however, it is getting noticeably hotter during the summers so air conditioning is certainly a welcome feature!
