An Open University broadcast from 1983 describing the growth of the alkali industry in the UK during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Excellent footage and photographs of this vital period of the industrial revolution.
Thanks for this my grandad worked at one of the earlier plants. He spoke of some of this. He as a kid would bring beer to the guys that turned the lime in the chlorine gassing rooms. It’s great to see the stories he told filmed in good detail. He spoke of the toxic ness of the whole process. He didn’t regret the plants passing. The safety left a lot to be desired. A lot of these chemicals were stored in glass and ceramic pulled by horses and carts. Bad things happened too often. The conditions were rough on the workers.
hey if anyone can help - there was a video like this available on the lead chamber process and it was AMAZING. It seems to have been taken off and now the footage isnt available anywhere! Can anyone help?
Yes, the video has been removed, presumably for copyright reasons. I don't think I have it any more and the OU don't appear to offer it online 😞 www.open.ac.uk/library/digital-archive/program/video:00525_3030
