I'm 45 and haven't really even had a bike around since high school. I bought a 2021 rockhopper comp a couple weeks ago. It's XXL, gears are 1x9, 29" tires, shocks have a lock out, hydraulic brakes, advent deraileur with clutch... I think its great for the money. It feels huge, but I'm getting used to it and I love it! My cardio is horrible right now and every time I take it out, I'm winded but keep going because it's so much fun. Just get it!!
I bought my wife a rockhopper in the mid 2000s. She rides with me but only on hard packed flat trails and road. I recently used hers when my ground control was in the shop and I was completely blown away by how amazing a ride it is. If you had blindfolded me, I would have though I was on a hard tail much more north of $1000
It’s amazing that they finally decided to meld the Pitch and Rockhopper together. I feel like that gives riders a lot of versatility, and also makes it so that there’s one bike thatcan be modded to be either a trail bike or a cross country bike
I love the video mike I own I rock hopper 2021 I ride every day I stay fit and commute too 3 miles going 3 miles back I also own a specialIzed sport and she is fast with 18 gears thanks Mike the bike guy
I had a Diamondback Overdrive 29er size small. It actually fits me well for 5'6 1/2". I will try to get this identical bike with size S and 27.5 tires. It must be fun to ride. The sloping top tube looks like a chldren's bike, I actually like it.
I bought 2 2021 Rockhopper Comp’s for my kids. L frame 29ers. They love it. Smooth and fast. Great bike. If can afford the little extra definitely go the 1x9.
I just picked up the 2021 rock hoper comp From Mike's Bikes Folsom. I LOVE IT! Actually, underneath the frame it says 2020? Is that just a frame date or ?
Awesome video. I got one of these. My only complaining at first was the disc touching the resin pad. I got over this by playing with the quick release on the front wheel. its a great bike and with high speeds its very stable. Its also very light which makes tricks like bhop easier. The brakes are not that strong, but im able to do a good stoppie so they are not that bad. Even in the stock config there are no annoying noises other that the chain slapping sometimes when i do tricks. Its a great bike and is worth every dollar you gave.
Picking this up tomorrow, replacing my 2010 hardrock sport which had 3 set gears. I do road and a little bit in off-road trails. Hoping this does well!
they got some in my local shop last week, I was supposed to go pick up then but got lazy. Went today and was surprised to still see about 3-4 of them there
Well presented information. I think I like it. Would be interested in your review of how it rides. Can't really tell if you like it or not... seems versatile enough, varied options available, overall, it's probably a pretty good deal.
Just purchased 3 of them for my kids. I got the xxs for my youngest (9 yrs old), xs for my middle (10 yrs old and smaller of my twins), and the s for my oldest (10 and bigger twin). The geometry was perfect for them and the adjustability will last them until they are adults and out of the house. Then they can buy their own bikes! The local bike shop was awesome to work with.
Considering getting this bike... would it be good for road biking as well or would it drag too much?? I need a good bike that can do both wouldn’t mind dabbling in mountain biking and would also like a bike to handle rougher terrain/gravel trails. Thanks!
it will be possible to ride on asphalt, but the roll will be mediocre due to sticky tires. It also has a very soft frame, which is good for trails, but bad for smooth asphalt. Also, the transmission is not suitable for high speeds (only if you do not select the junior stars in the cassette, which is undesirable due to their rapid aging)
I’m definitely thinking about putting this on my list. I’m not someone who’s heavily into upgrading bikes, I generally only replace parts when worn out. So I would like to know what you’re thoughts on availability of wheel sets in 135 /100 QR’s and also forks with a straight 1 1/8 steers in a couple or years time.
I got this one just found out its a women's bike because the guy in the bike shop told me but it works for me cause I'm 5'5 short legs. So I guess it don't matter now in days.
@@Jamesthebikeguy that what I told him that in the web page it don't say but he also showed me more straight frame of this rockhopper. He is old school so I guess he hasn't keep up lol
@@unmarketable3032 I ordered mine with the new race face ride pedals which supposedly have a very good grip and are good quality. For grips its more of your preference, but if you can, try the ESI chunky grips. And for wheels maybe a Maxxis Minion or Ardent. Hope it helps :)
I dented mine two weeks after buying it so it was new it has a very small dent but I love my specialized it so durable and fast light I took it to 3 bike shops they all told me my bike was still 100 percent just a small little dent under the seat where the tire connects i fell in some huge stone rocks...😀
Just got mine yesterday from my local bike shop and let me tell you guys, I’m amazed!! I’m no extreme MTB’r but this has it all for your basic/everyday trail riding!! Will be make a quick video of mine this weekend 👍🏼
That’s bro for this video. I’m now comparing this bike vs trek marlin 7. Both have red colors I like, but trek marlin have fork stopper & hydraulic disc brake where specialized did not include. Hmmm 🤔 I’m stuck
This guy obviously is sponsored by Specialized... you can't compare the Sport to a Marlin 7, you must compare it to a Marlin 5. The Comp compares against a Marlin 6, and the Elite goes against the Marlin 7 (no 2021 version at present).
@@arunallen1277 I think he probably gets paid by them AND trek for showing off their bikes. Regardless, I've spent hours comparing the rockhopper and marlin. I would put them in order as.. (2021) Rockhopper Base model (RH), Trek Marlin 5, RH Sport, Marlin 6, RH comp, Marlin 7, RH Elite, Trek x-caliber 7, and then RH Expert. Its kind of weird how they are back and forth for which is the better deal at a certain price point. That is until I saw that the RH sport was once $560 instead of $600 and the elite was $900 instead of $950. Maybe Covid and the supply vs demand made them raise the price. Basically you can't pay the same price for both with the same features. Objectively I don't think as far as components that one is necessarily better than the other. I will say specialized uses their own in house crank "stout" to probably save money whereas trek uses perhaps a better one from a company that specializes in that equipment. They both use in house parts for the handle bars, pedals and wheels/tires. I ended up being torn between the Marlin 6 and the RH sport, the RH sport doesn't have the lockout feature on the fork, but a XCM vs XCT. I then thought about going to the RH elite or Trek X-caliber. I decided I didn't want a 1x10 so I ordered the RH sport. Trek said the Marlin 6 could take as long as december or january or the Marlin 6 might have been the one I went with.
I started out with a bike just like yhat. Cost me 500$ got a little out of control upgrading it lol. Running all xtr drivetrain and xtr brakes. And fsa afterburner wheelset. Titanium handlebar. Cane Creek headset.
**ATTENTION BIG DUDES** For my 30th birthday, I told my family I wanted an entry-level Rockhopper 29 XL.. So far so good.. I am 6'4 and weigh approximately 340 lbs. This bike rides great. However, if you're a barbarian like me, get a big ol' dumbass seat with hella cushion.. Otherwise your ass is going to get sore quick and the joy of riding is going to be gone by your 2nd day. I hope this helps one of yall out there.. Happy trails yall!
Wow. You'd think that manufacturers like Specialized or Trek would be upping their game here in this price point bikes. They are getting some stiff competition in the entry level space from Schwinn of all companies in 2020. In fact, I'd maybe go out on a climb and suggest to someone looking for an entry level bike to look into a schwinn axiom if they wanted a 29er, or the 2020 model of the aluminum comp if they wanted a 27.5. They're honestly both equipped equally to this line, but a few hundred less. Just my opinion, though.
So i may be blind but I don't agree. This bike is easily as nice (prob nicer) than the Axum. Specifically if something breaks you can repair this, the house brand drivetrain on that bike will be hard to get fixed. Regardless the Axum is $400 and this bike is $500 in my area. Also in my area a pro bike build is $100, so simply getting the Axum built properly will equal the cost of these two bikes. Not to mention a beginner rider is not a "bike builder" so DIY is a bad option at this price. Further more this bike comes in 6 sizes so you get the right fit, versus just one size. Last thing that is never mentioned is warranty. Specialized is lifetime on the frame and a year on everything else. That means you are pretty well covered, where as every bit of labor that comes up with a Schwinn Axum is going to require doing the work yourself or paying a dealer. With all that said the $100 "premium" for this over say that Schwinn is well justified in my opinion.
I have this bike and everything I try to do on it it sucks at it. Every time I ride over roots the gears get all banged up and come off. The gears would come off 2 to 4 times every ride. And the derailer sucks
Your video motivated me to get one and I got mine today. Awesome entry level bike for the money. Could you make a video on how to make some affordable upgrades to the bike? Thanks and God bless
Hi guys, I'm a newbie in bikes in general and I'm planning on getting this one. People said that these are lacking in terms of the specs in this pricepoint. Can you guys suggest which parts to upgrade? I won't use it on extreme trails. Probably for casual riding + light trails.
Its perfectly fine as is for that. I have it, use it on Rocky downhill and some dirt jumps and drops. This bike isn't really recommended for that, I was on a tight budget and this is doing the job with no upgrades aside from different pedals so far. For what you mention it would be great as is.
I wonder how hard it will be for smaller dealers to deal with all the different frame sizes and models, especially with the two different medium bikes.
Less difficult than dealing with 2 redundant bicycles in all the frame sizes. 2019 there was Pitch and Rockhopper in all sizes from xs-xxl so this now makes it a lot easier for the consumer and the dealer
Hi! I'm been doing some trail running this past year, but covid made us stay at home. Im not fast, or anything, I just do it for fun. Now I want to go into mountain biking. See more places in less time. Have more experiences. But now I find bikes are not that cheap if you want something to start. People tell me that I can start for a bike around 800 USD and then after a year or so, I would spend up to 3000 USD or even more. I went to take a look and the dealer wanted to sell me a rockhopper. But I felt I was just being sold what they had. What bike would you recommend for someone that it is starting on MTM? I'm 5'11 and over 210lbs 45yo. Will be going in some trails up to 40 miles. Thank you! (Im in Mexico)
I'm 45 and haven't really even had a bike around since high school. I bought a 2021 rockhopper comp a couple weeks ago. 749 plus tax. It's a double XL, gears are 1x9, 29" tires, shocks have a lock out, hydraulic brakes, advent deraileur with clutch... I think its great for the money. It feels huge, but I'm getting used to it and I love it! My cardio is horrible right now and every time I take it out, I'm winded but keep going because it's so much fun. Just get it!!
Saludos
if i don't care for hydraulic brakes, is the Rockhopper sport worth the $150 more? Or is there a better value/quality bicycle for the same amount of money?
I was actually stuck in choices between 2021 Specialized rockhopper vs 2021 Trek Marlin 7. I ended up with Trek. Be getting my bike in the first week of august. Can’t wait getting my butt on the saddle 😁
@@dragonnetx I was stuck in the same choice rock hopper or marlin 🤔I went rock hopper tho, but I’m curious to know how you liked the marlin and wat is diff from the rockhopper in the vid to your marlin
Going from the base $550 Rockhopper to the $650 Sport model, you get a better fork, 9 speed cassette and hydraulic brakes. Better to spend the extra $100. If I get this, I'd be converting to a one by and better grips. After that, I'd be set.
Thanks for the review. This is the exact bike that I've been waiting for my LBS to get in stock for my 13 year old son but they're not sure when they will get one (red/small). They are getting some 2020 Pitches in though. For a kid who's going to spend time riding around town and maybe some time on the trails, would a 2020 Pitch with hydraulic brakes be better than the 2021 Rockhopper with mechanical ones, given the almost equal cost/wheel size/fork? Am I missing any other major differences?
@@Jamesthebikeguy hyro breaks are more costly to service. And not something most people will do. Mechanical disc brakes however can be serviced by the owner. Much easier to adjust like the old school rim brakes.
@@jamieadams3281 nah that's not it, these are the new 2021 models, they dont come out till august. What im saying is I havent seen Large as an option in the entire line.
Its only on pre-order as they have not landed yet due to the COVID production shortages. You can pre-order at your local bike shop so when they do come available you will get one quickly.
Hi, I am 5 foot 12 (184cm) and would like 27.5 inch wheels but the 27.5 version is only in Medium so would it be to small or no problem? And do you think It's worth it to spend the extra 100 bucks for the Sport version?
Hello I’m 5’10 and use to ride bmx (dirt). I like jumping. would a medium 27.5 be ideal for my size and jumping? I am no mountain biker yet but I plan to start and also ride this on street to commute when I want. Corona virus has me limited to go and feel one out. Kindly let me know please
We bought one of these for my son....the 2X drivetrain sucks....chain falls off regularly. He doesn't even ride very hard. I wouldn't buy this bike unless you want to look call riding around the neighborhood.
