Ahh. The glorious "Anteater". Used to run a 3388 2+2. One of my all time favorites. Always be sure to grease the u joints on that one shaft that spins constantly at engine RPM and runs to the back half every day.

I'd give anything to have a 3588, rear duals, and brand new paint and power. Beautiful tractors. Wish Case would've kept them today. Can you imagine a "2022 Case IH Magnum 2+2 340".

Somebody someday might bring this design back. Great visibility to the back and equal weight over both axles. Too bad Case IH dropped them. Once perfected it could have been quite a thing.

One of the best tractors ever. IH listened to the farmers on this one. But then IH workers got hypnotized by the UAW and went on strike in the late 70s. The IH strike hurt IH a lot. It probably didn't keep them from going under, but it definitely sped it up.

they striked because IH made way too many budget cuts in the late 70s to boost profits, which included dropping many product lines and severely cutting pay of employees.

I know I’ve heard farmers who used these really talk highly of them. But I remember when they first started showing up at the dealership, I thought that long anteater looking snout was the ugliest thing I’d ever seen and it looked like you’d have to take them to the airport to turn them around at the end of the row. I still think the 66 and 86 series were the best looking tractors any manufacturer ever built. I guess I’m partial because that’s what we farmed with.

@@MrJohndeere3720 we got a 1586 new in 77 I think it was. It was the first big tractor for my grandfather’s farm. Up until then my grandfather had done everything with a 504. My dad and his brother in law rented hundreds of additional acres and planted soybeans and corn and 33 acres of tobacco, which at the time was a lot of human labor. Dad had a full time job and was actually commuting 70 miles to farm on the weekends and off days. They apparently had a hard time getting used to the hydraulic brakes on the 86 and busted the bull gear a couple of times. The second time was in planting season and it took a long time for the shop to get it fixed and it put us behind planting that year. So my dad found a 1566 open station at auction sometime not long after that to make sure we weren’t without a tractor again. The price he paid for the 1566 made a lot more sense than the new price on the new 86. That quiet cab with a/c and a fantastic stereo system were nice and I loved it. But they really should have bought a used tractor to start out with. He even could have bought a 1566 with a cab at an auction before the 86 went down but didn’t. We had a chance to buy a 986 from my dad’s uncle who was being foreclosed on and we kept it a while. I used it a bit while we had it. I actually wish we had bought that one because we started a hay business in the late 80s when I was in college. We used the 1566 for that but it was really too much tractor for a round baler. And it wasn’t so big I couldn’t have cultivated with it. I liked them all but the 986 really made a lot more sense in retrospect.

We had a 6588 for decades. As a kid growing up it was the easiest "big" tractor to operate and learn on. Just point and go. We upgraded to a Steiger Cougar later on. The Steiger was more powerful and better, but the steering had a learning curve when seeding or harrowing as you needed to run past where you wanted to go.

Great piece of IH history, even if the audio track is a bit cheesy. Thanks for finding this film and putting it here. The 2+2 tractors are true row crop tractors and are amazingly nimble for their size. Previous to this 4WD tractors were mainly used for broadacre grain farming. We had 1 of the 319 6788 2+2s growing up that had the pump turned up far enough it'd leave a smoke trail from one end of the field to the other pulling a 5 shank earthmaster. It was a fun tractor to run, but our 7140 Magnum was where I rode most of the time.

I grew up using a 3388 and a 3788 nearly every day. I prefer using them over a conventional tractor for almost any use. You obviously can't just put your foot on one brake and spin around at the end of the field like the others, but it makes up for it in traction.

yeup, 15 years ago I worked on a farm that ran 3 3588s and 1 3788. We blew out rear ends on 2 of them. one of them was almost impossible to shift the range box even tho it had been to 3 different dealers for repair. Granted three of them had well over 10000 hours on them. All in all they were decent tractors, looked pretty dang good too. My biggest gripe with them is for being 4x4 articulated they would get stuck so easy and it seemed like as soon as you started spinning, you were buried up to the axle.

if u plan on putting new tires on it, then add that $7200 2 the price of the tractor.. im not sure what the mower would go 4, i would need the make & model number of it. i paid $8900 for my 1586 but then i had 3K of work done 2 it + another $300 of work done 2 it that i did myself, so now my tractor could go for 12,200. but im not done yet..lol if u think 13K is 2 low u can go up, go up 2 what u think is a far price. the 9K to 20K i gave u is the price range i've seen most go 4.. ya big tractor tires are $900+. we have a ih 400 gas & when the back tire blew out we had a 1k bill. my tractor tires are 10x bigger then whats on the 400, so if i had a blow out, im looking at a 2K+ bill . & thats only for 1 tire..

Without rear duals and weight using the 3 point pulling a heavy load it would tend to dog track, such a pulling the old hippers when bedding for cotton on hill sides, I know I ran a new 3588 on a cotton farm but you could'nt beat it pulling a 30' disk or 3 shank sub moisture plow.

The problem with the 2 + 2 was the nose was way too long. IH should have put the fuel tank somewhere else, that would have shortened it up considerably. The other problem it had was IH should have made it clear this was not the same as a large from four wheel drive. Guys put duals on and pulled the hell out of them and trany's couldn't take it. The problem with the 88 series two wheel drives was that stupid reverse flow fan. Dumb idea and it didn't work.
@MrJohndeere3720
@MrJohndeere3720 3 года назад
they should have left the tanks under & behind the cab that would have shorten them up alot.. the reverse flow fan most likely did not have the power 2 work in extreme conditions..
@GermanShepherd1983

@@MrJohndeere3720 Actually, behind the cab was a dumb idea too. The 86's had that, and you couldn't see the drawbar to hook up an implement, unless you used the mirror IH installed. Better place for the fuel tank would be under the steps, like all tractors have today.

IH just waited too long before updating their tractor technology. By the time they hit the market with their new very innovative tractors we were in our depression. Nobody was buying much let alone updating machinery. Auctioneers were busy selling out upside down farmers. Hollywood was making movies based on our miseries. Actresses who had only made a movie about farming were testifying before Congress in our behalf. Willie Nelson came up with Farm Aid. We were just hanging on coming off double digit inflation and doubling interest rates on borrowed money (thank you Jimmy Carter). And then JI Case came along and didn’t see the advantage that had been laid in their lap. They immediately stopped the production of IH tractors and only saw it as an opportunity to repaint and sell their backlog of Cases. The 80s! Sooo many missed opportunities……..
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 2 года назад
Yep d@mn Carter and his Soviet grain embargo, among his many other failures, which precipitated if not outright caused the 80's farm crisis... Well, that and the continuation of failed fiscal and ag policies, and stagflation coupled with super high interest rates and the Arab oil embargoes. I still remember as a kid sitting in line for gas... odd numbered plates could get gas one day, even number plates the next... Now we're getting ready to do it all again. Probly just quit this time around; don't feel like trying to muddle through for ten+ years waiting for things to get better... Later! OL J R :)
